Title: 96 KX500
Post by: flipk on April 09, 2007, 08:53:59 AM
Just bought a 96 KX500 after being out of riding for about 10 years.  Holy crap, I love it!!!  What a ride!  Anyway.........couple of dumb questions; any recommendations on transmission oil?  Also, what about mix ratios, other than the recommended 32:1.  I love the bike and I want it to be with me for alot of years, so any help is appreicated.

Congrats on being an official owner of the awesome K5.

I'd recommend Dextron3 ATF for the gearbox. Butter smooth shifts and superb clutch action, just be sure and change every other ride. 800ml of dex-3 is cheap too.

I tried several oil ratios and ended up with mobil1 syn 2T@ 50:1.  Jet for it and stick to it.  My bike will idle all day or run flat out with absolutely no spooge and very little smoke once up to operating temp.  45 pilot, stock needle in 2nd clip and 165 main @900 ft avg elevation.

The BR8 EIX Iridium plugs although more expensive never foul.

good luck
