Just wonder the size of the average 500 rider. I am getting one soon, but several people say I'm too small at 5'7" and 170lbs. I am pretty sure I will cut down the seat foam and lower the rear shock and soften up the suspension. But on my previous 500, I didn't do any of that and only found the size of the bike a problem if I had to stop while climbing a steep hill. This was usually because I ride with my younger brothers and they would fall in front of me :)
-
I'm not tall at 5'10", but I am stocky at 240 lbs. I think the KX5 and I are pretty well suited for one another...but then hey, i also have an XR50 pit bike that I like to cruise around too. Go figure!
-
5'9" @ 198. I was 235 when I got the bike, but after dropping some tonnage I can say it has only gotten better
-
Im 5"10,185lbs with no problems. If you rode a 500 before it should be easier this time, have fun!
-
GEEZE! Gettin' kinda nosy there aren't ya?
OK, picture Arnold Schwartzenegger in his Mr. Universe type physique. Then you'll have NO idea what I look like.
5'9" x 175# w/a 30" inseam. (But I lowered my bike maybe 2".)
-
I'm also 5'7" at 180. And man these bikes are tall! Soften up as much as you can and still maintain the geometry you like, I find the seat too wide, this hinders my reach to the ground, so I'm trying to bolt on a 250 seat and side panels, the thinner, narrow seat really does help.
-
Went to the doctor last week. I measured up at 6 foot 4 and 272 lbs. I need to drop 20 to 250 which is a much better weight for me. I have a friend about your size that has a cr500 and rides circles around me (ie up vertical cliffs)
where is the piggy icon?
-
im 4'3" tall and weigh 317lbs.
-
5' 10" and just under 13 stone which is errrrrrrrr........
about 196 pounds I think.
Just a few pounds less than that :)
-
Me too...... 5'7" and 160......what a ride. At first the big 5 seems quite the "reach" yet once you spend time on it.....no problem. My bike is stock and all I needed to do was set the sag properly for my weight and all was fine. Starting the bike took a little practice too and took me a while to master. Starting requires managing the bike on the tips of the toes.
For the smaller rider, who can learn to ride the 500, you can easily loft the bike and really clear the jumps. The bike really gives the rider a lot of confidence (maybe too much) if you respect the power. I ride mine like a four stroke when needed and spend most of the time in 2nd or 3rd during practice on the track.
I love the bike. Just to give you an idea of how manageable the bike is, after 20 years being off a dirt bike (my last bike was a Maico 400!) by the end of my FIRST day back at it, I was clearing 20 foot table-tops! What a rush. It all came back, must have good muscle memory or must be insane.
So, stand on the tips of your toes and go for it.

6'4"/255lbs - need to drop ~20lbs. I"ve owned/ridden an '88 XR600, '90 KX500 & '99 WR400 - all just wee little bikes.......

5'9''/142 - yeah, I'm pretty small. The 500 is a real nice bike for me, though. This is the third bike I've owned - started out 3 1/2years ago on a 1985 CR-60 at age 16. Then to a 2001 CR-250 and now to this beaut...

Im 16 and im 5'11 170 lbs, my bikes actually sitting to low for me, I need to raise it up..
-
Try a taller seat foam.
-
6'3" @ 250lbs. I need to drop about 25 more pounds
-
Nice to see some young guys riding 500's.I'm 5'11'' and 190lbs.
-
6'4" and 202 pounds just out of the shower and naked as a jaybird. Don't need to gain or lose any weight. My bike has the tallest bars I could find on the data charts (have no idea whose bend it is) and rolled forward so the ends turn up slightly; I have swapped the bar clamps for clamps that are one in taller; and I have added 2 inches to the seat foam to accomodate my 36" inseam. If you're not tall, the bike feels like riding a horse, but if you're tall, it's perfect.

6'0", 175# 39years ancient.
-
I 5'10" and about 275. The KX is tall for me until I sit on it! Rick posted some good info on making dogbones to lower the bike. If that's needed.
-
6'4"+, 275+/-, working on hacking that down to around 240. Raised my seat foam 2" for my 35" inseam, taller tapered bars with higher mounting adapters, stock rear spring but cranked the adjusters for max stiffness/height. A guy said to me one day "Mac, you are the only guy I know that can make a KX500 look small"
-
Thats funny KMAC, I get those " are you riding a 80?" jokes all the time!
6'7" here and 255lbs I use a tall seat and Moose Big Bars (Dick Burleson bend-just like CR tall but narrow for woods) and roll them forward a little.
It is the best fit I have ever had on a bike!
-
I am 6' and 235~, trying to get back down to 215 or so, and with tall bars find the fit just about right.
-
I'm 5'10" about 170lbs alomst 29 y.o. and it fits like a wet pair of riding boots!
-
5'10" and about 13 stone 4 which is........Errrrr.......
186 pounds :)
I don't need the different dogbones cos I have fat 17 inch wheels on mine :D
-
IM 6FT2 AND 210LBS MY LIL BRO IS 5FT6 AND 145 LBS AND IS LIKE A FLEA ON THE KX500 BUT, HE CAN HANDLE IT JUST DEPENDS ON HOW BIG YOUR BALLS ARE AND IF U CAN RIDE!
MY BRO WENT FROM A KX80 TO AN IT465 TO DO ENDUROS AND EARN HIS STRIPES
AFTER WHICH I AWARDED HIM A MOTOX FOX BLACK BELT AND THE KEYS TO MY 500 HEHE
-
6,1 and 195lbs
-
hello
i'm 5'11" at 195 and the 500 is lighter than my old bikes ,and the suspension is set up soft.
-
5' 8" and a portly 190lbs. Stumpy legs suck in the rocks!
-
6'1" and 190 lbs. Chicks call me the love machine  Ok, all my X's hate me (except a few) but isn't that how it always happens
-
6'1 at 200 lbs even with 34 inseam fits just right. I have larger friends who ride my bike with more problems from the added traction their weight brings, oh well its worth that scared look on their face !!
-
44years, 5'10" and 200lbs, optimum would be around 190lbs. The KX is a perfect fit for me. I think it's attitude more than size that matters on the KX, look at Jeff Ward. Back in the stone(d) age, I used to race against a guy who was so small he couldn't touch; had to stand on a milk crate at the starting line. Of course after the start no one saw him since he was soo far out in front. Cam.
-
old thread, just thought I'd chip in!! :)
5'4 155
The KX is a bit tall for me. I'm working on getting the spring rates right, when the bike is tall to start with AND you have basically zero sag things are a lot worse!! :) The irony eh? The more need you have for it to be shorter, the more likely you are to have it taller.
Seriously though, its only tall when I'm trying to move it motor off (kill the motor, have to stop and help someone, etc)
I'd like to take about an inch and a half out of the seat, then it would be about perfect.........
Kinda funny when people look at you and say "can you kickstart that thing???" and they can't! :)
-
6' 252lbs down to 215lbs (Atkins Diet) :D , I can say suspension loves me more now!
-
OK 95 kilo 5 feet 10 inchs. Very rearly have to touch terra firma. {with me feet] .
-
5' 10" and 175 pounds.... :D
-
6.0' 220#
-
6.0' 200#
-
5'10" 215lbs.

Seems like almost all KX5 rider are fat geezers - except me. I am all muscles like Mr Arigato here on the picture above.
-
6'2" 230# (sho'nuff fat geezer)
-
Man I don't know what's tuffer, Arigato or the KX 5????? :D
"Seems like almost all KX5 rider are fat geezers"
What U talk-in-bout, fat geerers???
I'm a 34 YO, and 5'10" @ 175!
:D :D :D
-
I fall into that rather heavy category, but not a geezer! I'm 18 at 6'2 and weighing in at an incredible 265 pounds. The 500 suits my big frame very well.
-
6' 2" 40y.o. 245. The six pack look left many years ago. I am working on loosing 30lbs. I like the kx 500 alot, but am also looking for better (updated)ergos. I am seriously considering buying a newer 250 and transplanting the 500 heart.
-
The problem with getting older; you develop more "muscles" and your bones are becomming ever so brittle. It's not a good combo... Add a KX5 to the mix and broken bones is just a question of time.
I'm 180cm / 85 Kg (5'.9'' / 187 punds) with a beer belly & computer arms. I would like to think that I have the constitution of Mr Arigato - I can't claim that I have though. I look more like a skinny old git with a pot belly.

I'm a big puss compared to this muscle.
-
Your only as young as the woman you feel.
-
6'1" - 210lbs... Looks like I fit the profile as well.
-
186cm tall and 65kgs riding 500 (and yes sometimes i like a rag doll when riding)
-
48 years old-6' tall-238 pounds
My K5 fits like a glove.
-
6'3" tall and 185 lbs. I fit the KX5 pretty well. I still stand with one foot on the trailer when I'm starting it cold though. Also when I ride standing up I feel a little too bent at the waist. As far as i know my suspension is all stock and Ive never felt it bottom and thats with some pretty good size air at the dunes.
