Title: How old are you?
Post by: QuantumDuck on February 03, 2003, 12:30:58 AM
I'm wondering what the median age of the average KX500 owner is..this was brought on by several things...reading around the intro page here and on the last few forums I notice almost all of us have more than an extensive amount of ride time under our belts...another thing that prompts this question is two separate episodes that happened at my work last week...

The first one happened when a kid about 17-18 years old came in and was asking about trading in a KX on a YZ...I asked what kind of KX and he said it was a KX125....since I am now looking closely at the KX500s on the market, I said," d**n, too bad it's not a KX500 cuz I would buy it from you right now."...This kid wrinkles his nose and tells me that KX500s are junk. I looked at him incredulously and said,"Junk?!" and he says," Of course they're junk, you can't ride them anywhere except the desert. They ain't no good anywhere else. And we live in Ohio, there ain't no deserts around here".. At that point, I realized this kid had no clue about the big KX and he didn't seem like he was receptive to learning so I just droppped it...

They next day I was talking with our other mechanice, again, he is 18 years old, but he has a great head on his shoulders, he rides alot, races motorcross and hare scrambles occasionally and was just accepted to MMI in Phoenix..I was tellin  him about this kid who came in and it turns out my mech knows him and informs me that his buddy was right...after calling my mechanic a few choice adjectives i asked him how he could possibly think that about the KX500...his reply," Too much power...too much power off the bottom...too much power in the middle...too much power on the top...too much power to be usable in anything but running as fast as you posably can dodging rabbits in the middle of Nowhere, Mexico." I laughed...at least he was showing a little respect :D  I said fine, in about 3 weeks there is gonna be a big ol' KX500 sittin in my shop and I told him no matter how much he begs, he ain't gonna ride it...his answer?...GOOD!...I'd kill myself on that thing!...

I guess though in a way it's good that the younger guys are afraid to run something as powerful as the KX500 in the dirt...cuz there is no shortage of young guys that think they can handle the power of the new generation of 600cc sportbikes out there with 125-130 hp as new riders...and I've seen firsthand the damage that can do...

I guess it's a good thing that most of us have 'grown up' enough to appreciate the big 5....another reason i ask this is...I turn 35 today  and if I'm gonna get old...by god i'm gonna do it in good company!

I ride mine in everything from desert (AZ - where I live) to Gulf Coast gumbo mud (where I grew up) and the big bike is at home everywhere, unless a MX track is your thing and then the bike is seriously lacking by todays standards. Oh yeah, I'm 33

I often get asked the infamous "Why did you buy a 500?".. The answer is ALWAYS, "'cause they don't make a 600!"... The other obvious answer is, your street car CAN run about 120 mph... do you drive it 120 all the time?.

My bike history is a 250 yamaha D/S, 360 Yamaha Enduro, 360 Yamaha MX, 450 Maico and the present '03 KX500.... (see a pattern?) It's a blast when going up a hill and just grabbing as much throttle as you need .. KNOWING there's a lot more left to twist if you NEED IT!..

Oh yea, I'm now 48....

57 at the end of the month!

Well you guys! I may be the oldest guy in this club, :x I would like to know is that is true?

I get all those remarks from the young 4strokes guys. Why would you ride one those outdated bikes? "follow me in the desert, if you can, and you will understand" Or "how many jackrabbits you caught today"

I guess when I get to old to ride my KX I will put the motor in my wheel chair

PS I love that comment, "Why did you buy a KX500", because they don't make a 600   :D

I am 39 and got mine for the same reason they didn't make a 600!! The main reason the young guys don't like this bike is because they are used to the cut and thrust riding style. If you do this on a kx500 you will be in a world of hurt. This bike is about self control ( which very few of the young kids have now a days) stay smooth with the throttle and respect it and this bike will reward you with awsome fun. These kids that say " to much power" are just saying I have no self control so I am scared.I have found that " to much power will get you out of more trouble than not enough".

Post by: Rick on February 06, 2003, 03:00:28 AM
Well, back on the board, and thought I would jump in on this thread.  I have never raced or owned anything but Kawasaki bikes.  Didn't start riding until I was 30, and started on a well used 1986 KX250.  Stayed on the KX250 until 1999, when I switched to a KX500.  The only reason I tried one is because our bike sponsor had one I could get ahold of for several months to ride.  So, I rode both the KX500 and the KX250 for about 6 months.  Once I got over the fear of the big 50, I decided to stay with them because they fit my 6'5" frame a lot better than the 250.  Now, I can't think of riding or racing anything else, but then again, I don't race motocross, just offroad.

Oh yes, I will be 44 years old this year, and this year I will finally move from the Open expert class to the over 40 class.  The overall is really what matters anyway, and it will shut everyone up that keep asking when I'm getting out of the open class.

I'm turning 40 this year.  I started on dirtbikes back in high school on a 79 KDX 400.  This was my first dirtbike and I always felt it was underpowered.  I got my KX 500 two summers ago (it being my second dirtbike...been on street since high school) and when I was looking, I wanted something more powerful that that KDX.  About the only thing bigger was the 500.  Having never rode a 125 or 250, I had no preconcieved idea about how much power it did or did not make.  I just got on and learned its characteristics and LEARNED to ride it accordingly.

Anyone who says the 500 has too much power has NO THROTTLE CONTROL!!!  I watch the video tapes of the District 15 (Indiana) harescrambles and GNCC's I ran last year and you can hear the guys with 125's and 250's with the throttles pinned and slipping the clutches going up hills and in mud.  My 500 (and the big 4 stroke guys) just get on and off the throttle as needed and I hardly EVER use the clutch.  There just isn't the need when you have a TRACTOR under your seat that just putts up a hill or thru a tough spot.

You dont need desert to run the big 500 in either.  It works just GREAT here in central Indiana for harescrambles. (at least I like it!!).  I only ran 4 D-15 races and finished 11th in the state for beginner  "C" class.  Managed to finish in the top 20 in the Open C class for the 2 GNCC races I ran also.  NOT bad for an almost 40 year BEGINNER on a 10 year old KX 500 that hasn't been on a dirt bike in 20 years!!

I might be the youngest one on here, but I have probably logged more hours on a bike than most of you MATURE guys!!  I'm 27 years old and just bought 2 new kx 500's, a new leftover 01 and a brand new 03. I have ridden extensively 125's, KTM200's, 250's, Husky 360, and last year yzf 426 and 250f's. I wanted a bike I can win contingency $$ on in the Open A class in the GNCC's, and it came down to the yzf 450 and the big green machine. I have rode the 426 with a great many mods and trick parts last year and in 4 to 5 months went through 3 major motor breakages. But like I say I also ride a lot, usually at least 5 days a week in the middle of the season. But any way, I got on the 01 500 and immediatly loved it. It has to be the smoothest easiest to control bike I have ever ridden.  Starts 1st kick every time, is quite light and flickable and doesn't know the meaning of the word hillclimb, turns on a dime and doesn't require a factory mechanic if something in the motor braks. Plus I got both bikes for $8700.00. I don't know why the 500 has such a bad reputation, but most people laugh or think I am totally insane for buying a 1992 dirt bike without all the power jet carbs, and expensive designed graphics of the "new" bikes. I have yet to get to race this year, and may be out for a while due to a crushed left knee,  but I do plan on still doing very well in the GNCC's and National Hare Scrambles this year.
Title: Had an ATC 110
Post by: Lincoln on February 12, 2003, 01:55:22 PM
I had an ATC 110 as my last dirtbike, and it's quite generous to call that little thing a dirtbike, but it was the most fun a sixth grader could have.  Everyone does always seem to trip when you "explain" about having a 500.  The bottom line with any risk-oriented sport is throttle control.  Dad always said, "Just keep the brain attached to the throttle."  And there are times when there's just no substitute for horsepower.

Speaking of horsepower, did anyone else see the Tomahawk at the Detroit Auto Show?  It was in Autoweek--maybe that'll pique your interest.  I just spent the past half-hour trying to find the link, but I suck.

I'm thirty-one.  Whoo-Hooooo......

I know I am way late to reply, but seeing as how I just found this site a few days ago, I thought I might chime in. I am 35. I rode dirt quite a bit on 80's and 125's as a kid. I quickly lost interest in dirt as soon as I could legally swing a leg over a sportbike. I rode street for years...raced some too. After I graduated college, the real world settled in and I gave up on bikes. Since that time I ignored the voice in my head. It nagged me every day! I got involved in other hobbies thinking they would satisfy me. Nope. A few times last year I went out with my friends to the high desert, and baby-sat camp while they rode off on their bikes. It was painful. I decided I WASN'T too old to get one. Still, I waited.

A few weeks ago I went out to Glamis for the first time. I was lucky enough to ride a few nice bikes. A vintage 125, a new CR250...all fun. Then I start talking to a friend and he says he knows of THE bike I need to try. It was his bike...he knows the history...blah blah blah. So I go take a look. It turns out to be a '87 KX500. I have heard the stories of how KX500's rape and pilage. How they rip men limb from limb! I buy it anyway. I have ridden long enough to know that a little self-control goes a long way.

I got to take the bike to Glamis last weekend. Holy $hit! This thing is a rocket. I am in love! 35 years old, 230 lbs. and the skills of a novice. Perfect! I agree that having more than enough power will get you out of more trouble than put you in, IF you are smart. So that is my plan...to ride smart.
Title: Zombie's riding history
Post by: Zombie on March 10, 2003, 11:48:44 AM
Well, I started riding when I was about 14, on a totally trashed Suzuki TS 185 (that lasted about a half hour untill the piston shattered!!) with a gaping hole in the headpipe. My little brother got that and another non-running bike off a friend for $50 bucks. My first bike I bought with my own money was a Hodaka Ace 100 (that I still have, and have for sale by the way...) that I got out of the backroom of a Harley dealership. Not long after that, I acquired an 82 RM 125, although I really wanted a 500 at that point (Ive always been a power junkie) and I finally traded the RM and $600 for a beat 85 KX 500. While it was a bit shabby, it ran like a fuel dragster. Then it was stolen out of my garage. That sucked.

New member today! Ride in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. Great mix of treed, single-track & open riding, love my '91 KX5. First bike was an '82 Yamaha IT465 which I also thought was great, although a bit of a handful for a rank novice. Started riding in '88 @ age 29, now 44 and going strong. I think alot of these kids who think 500 2-smokes are junk are pussies. Dirt Bike mag had a lot of good things to say about this supposedly dated bike in their Feb. or March?? issue.  6'5", +/- 260lbs., I like big bikes.

Hey Kmac!  Good to see another BC person here.  Im up near Prince George.  Havent been riding in the 'Loops' area yet but I heard that its alot of fun.

As for the rest of the topic, I agree that alot of kids these days are worried and scared about just how much power these beasties can produce.  My buddy on his CR500 was climbing hills around here that he wouldnt even consider touching with his CR250!

Its good to see that these bikes are being used in real world off road situations.  I was a little concerned that if I bought one it wouldnt be suitable for trail duties.

Well, thought I jump in on this topic. I recently bought my 98 kx500 after selling my 2002 harley. The way I figured, I wanted something with power after riding my harley so, I knew I wanted the kx500.  Even though I had to rebuilt the bottom half when I bought it, I knew it was the right choice.  Oh by the way, I ride alot of trails here in beautiful hawaii and I'm 39 also. My saying is, go big or go home.

Guys, I just have to chime in on this one since I may be the youngest on this forum at 25!  I have had my 1990 KX since 1994 when I was 17.  All the guys I rode with were in their late 20's to late 30's and were all cross country madmen on CR 500's.  I knew when I got a newer bike, it needed to be a 500 to tame the Wyoming hills!  I guess I have always been into big bikes though.  I started on a Suzuki RM80, then straight to an RM 250, then to an RM 400.  All these Suzuki's were 1980 models!  When all my high school friends were still riding 125's, I was riding a 500 that was light years ahead of my previous bikes and laughing at hills they were scared to try.  Now, at age 25, this forum has convinced me to upgrade the  big KX5 and get serious about riding again.  With a V-Force reed cage, and some new Moose flex bars, the bike is as fun as ever and can still make any hill I can point it at.

Also, anyone from the West?(Not California!  Its technically in the West, but not part of the REAL West....LOL)

If so, contact me at: gconner77@yahoo.com

'How old are you?' is a Question a lot of people used to ask me, mainly after my performing some Inane prank or passing a Comment in a situation that I thought suited my Dry sense of Humour but evidently not others. No Problem and I dare to be different. That goes for my reason to own a KX 5'er and the reasons are Clear. Horsepower, reliabilty and Exclusivity, Being maybe the only Correspondent on this Site from the Southern hemisphere is interesting, I know the Big KX was never a Popular Bike in Australia, Why ?, I have no Idea, But there are Countless Cr500's over there. here in New Zealand, 1200 miles east of Oz there are'nt that many either but the balance is certainly better. At 41 I still get a few comments about my Choice of ride but thats cool. best thing was the other W/E at the Bike park before a Hare & Hound a Dad had his 5 year old perched on my seat and asked if it was OK to take a Pic. I asked him why my Bike ?? ( the only KX500 in about 130 Bikes) and he said " Fundamentally, its the Best Bike here, by a Mile...and one day when he's older I'll show him the pic explain to him that he was sitting on the Most powerful DirtBike money can Buy, cos they won't be around when hes Big enough to ride one of these.. a KX500!!' He thanked me and wandered off, the Kid was laughing , wondering what the fuss was, I was pumped. Then I was pissed off Because I got a front wheel Flat 30 min in , Left my Repair kit in the car and had to DNF, Then it started raining........The I got a Speeding Ticket going Home..........

I'm 31 and bought my 91kx500 about 6 months ago.The list of bikes I've owned goes like this:81mx80,82rm80,83yz80,84kx80,83cr125,86cr500,91kx250,88cr250,94cr250,94xr650l,92cr250 and now the big kx.I don't remember owning a bike that I looked forward to riding more than this one.I live in abbotsford,b.c.,canada where there is nothing resembling a desert but alot of tight single track and alot of logging roads.Neither one is tough on the kx but that clutch pull can be tough on tight trails.Anyway, I really like it.
Title: clutch pull
Post by: mikesmith on June 12, 2003, 07:18:38 PM
Hey 91KX,you can lighten up the clutch pull by extending your clutch arm 8mm,reroutting the cable in a direct line from lever to arm instead of the long way its routed stock, using a works connection clutch lever and perch or Fly Racing, ect.  that has a bearing in the lever(uses a Honda type bend for best leverage) ,and keeping it well lubed(Rick has a good write up on lubing the cable). And positioning the lever so you pull on the end of the lever for the most leverage,I did all these mods to my bike and have a lighter pull than my friends bikes, even the ones on 125's.Hope this helps you out.

I'm now 33 years old and I've been riding since I was about 10 years old. I've got a ton of experience on the 250 2 strokes and some amount of time spent on the 500's before I got my current KX. I weigh only 157 lbs and I find the 500's to be very easy to ride as long as I don't constantly full throttle the dang thing everywhere I go. Too much power is a lame excuse for those with no self control, I love having all that power on hand when I need it. I've been able to race the same tracks as those on the 250's or 450's and I can do it just as easily, but it takes some control and discipline. The 500's do however require a whole new style of riding technique, they behave a little differently than the other bikes, but getting use to them takes practice and time and before you know it you'll be just as good as anyone else on a bike.
On another note... I have a buddy who just bought a Suzuki quad that now has a CR500 motor in it, holly cow that thing is crazy fast. The 500's are the best to go in my oppinion.

In 6 little days... St. Patrick's Day comes once again... and it will be the last of my 30's (I'll be 39).

KX500... because there's just no other substitute for being "At the top of the Predatory Chain".

The '97 RM250 I'd had was kickass in a major way....

I probably would have been happy with the DualSported '01 KTM450MXC I had, but caution had me sell it to make some funds available last year when my wife was pregnant with my (1st and only) child and her work situation was iffy.

Since I realized I don't get to go riding a lot to warrant the cost of a new bike.. and since daul registration for a converted DualSport make that part of it pricey.  I decided my next dirt ride would be strictly dirt... and I missed the two-stroke power delivery.  I'm sorry... but to me... the 4-strokes just aren't explosive enough.

I first bought this ultra cheap '90 KDX200 with the plans to restore it.  Quickly realized it may be more work than I wanted to bother with so gave that bike to my younger bro when I spotted the '97 KX500 on Craigslist for $1250.00 (and also so I'd have someone to go riding with).

Man... I soooo freaking LOVE the K5.  As a matter of fact... because of buying the K5... the first time I took her for a quick blast down that first whooped-out section of trail near where we parked in Stoddard Wells....  I came back to the truck where the others were suiting up and said "WHOA-HO-HO MAN!!!  I gotta start going back to the GYM!!! HOLY $H!T!!!"

And that's just what I've done.

The arm pump situation was soo intense that first ride.  As a software engineer I type a lot so my arm pump situation made me actually a lil nervous at times when making the jump to ludicrous-speed.  Plus... my secondary goal is to start now so that when I hit 40 I'm gonna be lookin' like the Shiznittle!!

I love the looks you get with this thing too!!!  Not only when you show up that massive cylinder showing and ginormous gleaming shiny FMF Fatty pipe.... but the way people nearby have to turn around to look because they know somethings different as soon as they hear it fire up!  There's something deeper, meaner.. ballsier about the exhaust note of a big ol' 500cc two-stroke that either most of them have never heard before... or remember watching with awe as a kid.

And OMG!!! this things suspension feels better than the '01 KTM (both bikes re-sprung and re-valved by the same suspension tuner shop) I can bash thru gnarly-a$$ mean desert whoops at crazy speeds!!  The only bike I've ever rode that was more plush in the desert was an  '82 Husky 250XC which came stock with Ohlins forks and shocks 13" out front and 13.5" out back.  But that thing was not for turning sharply.....whereas the K5 does just fine.... almost as good as the '97 RM250 did.  I think it can be made to do it equal with better tire selection.

And man-oh-man once you've tackled a treacherous tight twisting technical uphill with a K5... you're SOOOO glad it was a K5 underneath your a$$ and not something smaller. Soooo stress-relieving to just plain know you're not going to kill the engine, no way no how.

and isn't it beautiful how something that doesn't look like a jump can become a jump when you've got that much STANK to put on it whenever you please?

The other part of me going back to the Gym is because my vow is that my newborn son will not drive a car until he can blow past me on dirt bikes out in the desert and make me look real bad.  Once he can do that... I'll know there is nothing the streets can throw at him that will phase him.  That is.... except for young lil hotties standing at the street corner waiting for the crosswalk to change.  :-D

big props to the guy that said he was 72!!  I'm gonna be like that guy.. hell yeah!

HAH! i win. im only 18. and most kids my age are scared of my bike, which is fine with me cuz im not about to let em' ride it!

d**n, i thought i had a chance to win this one! I bought my 2001 k5 in 2002 at age 16 so that i could be faster than my buddy with the cr 500.

A lot of young guys tell me how much the bike sucks until mine scares the sh*t out of them.  I dont think the big bore 2 will die. AMA will let 250s race with 250Fs next year, this may start a trend for the privateer....

This post was started in 03, so I guess IT is five years old. I am 52 years old and just learning how to ride, the bike didnt come with instructions. For a year back in the early eighties, I had a Husquavarna wr250. Never really got good at riding it, then about six years ago picked up an old cr250, rode it a lot, rode it until it felt slow, then bought a NEW KX500 in the fall of 04,drove from Michigan to Warren Ohio to pick it up. The 500 never feels slow, but I now am used to it, I love all that power, I love how easy it starts, I love the stories my friends tell about my roost.

36 years for me. Started out on a kx 80 at 13. Moved to a 125 then a 250 for some time.

Always wanted a 500 and when I ran across my 04 I had to have it. None of my friends will ride it. They just look at it like d**n.....u crazy!

I've been riding since I was about 10 or so years old. I'm 33 years old now and this ain't my first 500cc dirt bike I've ridden. I weigh a whopping 157 lbs and 5'8" tall, so when some punk thinks he can whoop me on a bike I put him in his place usually. The first place I ever tried out a 500cc was at the sand dunes in Utah, I had a Honda CR500 and a KX500 at the time and I only weighed about 125 lbs. I made it to the top of the face without a paddle, gee I wonder why? =)

GDogg, i hear ya on that. when i'm rippin' my 98 K5, i get thumbs up, people come closer, golfers come walk to the fence, i almost want to let someone else ride it so i can stand from a distance and really hear how it sounds.

i got my 98 K5 for $1,500 off Craigslist. i thought that was rare. but a 97 K5 for $1,250 is great.
