Title: Gearing for mx...
Post by: ben on October 16, 2006, 05:34:17 AM
I just bought a huge box of parts from a guy that used to have a 97 KX500.  The box has a bunch of front and rear sprockets.

When I race my 2001 KX500 at our local motocross tracks, I always have run the stock gearing, which I think is 14/47.  In the box there are 45T, 46T, 48T, and 50T rear sprockets, and 13T and 15T front sprockets.

Has anyone run different gearing from stock for motocross applications, and can you make any comments or recomendations?

Thanks.

Also, if anyone is interested, the guy I bought the parts from used to ride flat track and on the ice.  In the box were stock fork springs modified to lower the front of the KX500 3" or so, and two tie-rod things to lower the rear of the bike as well.  I'd be willing to let these go for real cheap, as I will probably never use them.

I find that the 14/47 combo a little tall for moto but it always depends on the track.  I prefer to run 14/48 or 49.

Yeah,
I'd second the 14/48 for MX.  Killer 2nd or 3rd gear starts. Cam.

i am usually running a 14/45 (mostly sand). way too tall for track. a good rule of thumb is to find a gear ratio that you almost top the bike outwith. take a few sprockets with you to the track.

in MX i think i would use the 13T CS, and make sure your chain is short enough for the smaller sprocket and long enought for the large one.

14/49 is mean and green.
