I just goy my Scotts catalog, and I'm a little confused about compatibiliy with standard crossbar style handlegbars. Do any of you know if you can run standard Renthal handlebars with Scotts steering dampers? Scotts actually sells a Renthal handlebar with a "bowed" brace so as to clear the damper unit. all the pictures in the catalog are all of bikes with Pro Taper style bars. Thanks,
Rich

Go to Olddirtrider album in the gallery to pic #5 /29 and you will see how my Scotts damper is mounted!

Alan, which version do you have? (bolt on, or weld on)? Did you have to cut the crossbar pad for clearence?
-
The mount is the weld on type and no we did not cut the cross bar. Let me see if I can find a better detail and post it for you! If you need more detail let me know I will take more pic's. Not the damper is mounted backwards on the bars. :-D
Looking at it I know we welded something, but I can't remember what it was!

Scotts told me weld on only for my 04' K5. I bought their bar mount and cones and run pro taper bars. So far I am pleased with the bars and how the cones make it feel. I don't have the damper on yet. I have a friend that is going to tig weld mine when he gets back from school. He is being trained on how to make molds to produce carbon fiber air plane parts. He'll be back at the end of this month.
My weld on post had to be cut to size for length. I used a small pipe cutter. It did mash the I.D. of the hole but a fine rat tail file fixed it up no problem. On the frame side it had to be hammer/bent and ground to fit. Today I will use paint stripper to remove the paint where the weld will take place. Pic's if you want to check it out so far.

Thanks for the pics and input guys! The only issue I am thinking I will have, is on all my Kawis' I like to flip the offest bar posts around and foreward. This looks like it will put the steering damper in the wrong position for the "bolt in" version. I am thinking I should get the weld on version, that way I can put the post standoff exactly where I need it.
-
The reverse position works exactly the same as it would in the other position. Actually we called Scotts and the recommended mounting it that way! :-D

After getting jerked around by GPR, I opted to purchase the Scotts unit, and a VERY good call on my part. I had to wait over 2 weeks to be able to purchase one as a dealer, but all was worth the wait!!! I set up the damper per instructions. I had my forks set flush to the triple tree, and after many high speed runs, I needed to go 3 clicks firmer in dampening to totally rid the headshake. I also must comment adding a steering stabilizer greatly minimises REAR wheel swapping blitzing whoops also! Now a few days later the REAL test: I slid my forks up so I have 5/16" of fork above the top clamp. This previously would cause MAJOR headshake on rough straights. To my absolute JOY, I needed 2 more clicks to totally rid my 5 of headshake. I can now hold my 5 WO and have simply a light grip on the bars. I got ZERO arm pump my last day of riding! I am heading up to our local MX track Wed. for the final call, which I am confident will be a whole new world of enjoyment on my 500. Heres a few pics:

Did you remove the rubber when you welded. And what kind of welding, tig? I have the same set up.

What "rubber" ??
I work for a machine shop that also has a full blown weld/fabrication shop. They TIG welded my bracket, which only exerts minimal heat.
-
It's some kind of seal at the top of the steering stem. I guess tig welding does not get hot like mig welding? Not a problem for the seal? My friend finally got his garage wired for 220 and will tig weld my damper post to the bike. I have owned my damper for about 1 year. I'm ready to test it out.

High frequency TIG welding is a far prefered method, especially with chromoly tubing. They only did a small amount of welding on each side of the post bracket, and the green frame paint didn't even discolor! The only thing to remember: ALWAYS disconnect your CDI box connections when TIG welding anything on your frame. TIG's ultra high frequencies can "zap" and fry your CDI box very easily.

I went to put my damper on (I own this company www.motosportz.com) but my vintage 87 has the bar mounts at an angle to the triple so it is going to take a little rethink.
-
I welded my post on with a stick welder and a stainless rod that burned at a low amperage. I got to say that I love my scotts.

I changed my 87 front end for a 89 front forks and clamps. The bar mounts are straight up on the 89 and new 500's. I hope to buy a damper soon myself.

I need your opinions and knowledge on steering damper/stabilizers. Do you use them on your KX500's? Before I spend $500-$600 on a kit. I would like some information from people with experience. I'm looking into the "SUB" mount style.
Thanks

I'm not a hard core fast rider. I think that's where the dampers come into play the most. In the woops section. I have a top mount and the underbar mount also. I have not tried to remove the damper from the sub mount on my KX500AF (KX450F chassis) but it looks like you would have to remove the bars to remove the damper. Each application is different so keep that in mine if you plan on using 1 damper for more than 1 bike. I'm more of an off road single track rider. Last time I rode my CR500R at the local riding area, I did not have a damper on the bike. There has been allot of tree damage because of the freezing rain last winter that brought many large limbs down across the trail. We had been riding about 4 hours and I was getting tired. I was crossing an 8" limb that was across the trail at a 45 degree angle. I did not get the front wheel up enough and when I hit, it deflected the front wheel so hard it yanked the handle bar from my left hand. Down I went. I think if I was on my AF bike with the damper I would have been able to hang on. Since then I have gone to Pro Taper fat bars with the Scott's under mount. When I get a little more coin in my pocket I will purchase the damper for that bike.
If you plan on swapping between bikes they all need the same mount. The top mount damper arm is different than the sub mount damper arm.

Dan, I have a Scott set up that I removed from my '94, I could not use it with the Rox risers I put on. If you are interested, I think i still have all the parts to it and will make you a deal. I'm pretty sure it was a top mount though.
-
hey basket, if dan does not want that stablizer, i am interested. let me know please.
-
Danger, it is the same arm, just turned around. I got a link arm puller from scotts. I forget what I paid but it is less than $50. It is pretty straight forward. I removed mine from the old wr (over mt) and put it on the new 300 (sub mt), not a big deal. I don't think that I would switch back and forth for day ride. If I was overhaulin a bike and was gonna ride the other one i would switch.
Back to op, my uncle has a scotts over mount on his 91 k5 and loves it. I wouldn't want to ride without it. I am a huge fan of stabilizers and have them on all my bikes. (switch back and fourth between wr/300) The wr doesn't get ridden much. Most all the people I ride with have one and feel the same way. I have posted some thoughts on stabilizers in Tips and Tricks.

The GPR Is great, They also have great customer service. They have a lifetime warranty last time i checked. But from what I've heard the Scott is great as well. I've even heard of some guys taking the little stock dampener off the 09 honda 450's because they don't like the heavier feeling of the gpr or scott.Personally the GPR, is the way for me just because of customer service. here's were i got mine.

Not only do I think this is a good idea but very easy. You can find these like new on ebay for cheep. All you would have to do is weld a little mount on the frame for the top and the fab up a flat piece of aluminum plate that would get sandwiched between the fender and lower triple clamp that bent up at a 90 degree angle for the bottom mount.
-
sweet....if you see any on ebay let me know.
Cheers

Dont waste your time, they suck. I have a 08' 450x and you can crank the thing all the way and not even tell a difference. Stick with the Scotts or GPR.
-
Good to know.....man they are pricey suckers...

Steering dampers not only work at high speeds but slow speeds also. If you ride alot of tight single track or rocky trail, the damper helps take away some of the deflection that occurs in rocks, roots and even bar banging tight woods. Ive been using WER dampers on all my bikes since 94. They have worked well for me.
-
another great benifit i've learned with the Scott's unit is versatility. I have 2 MX bikes, I initially bought a Scotts for my KX500, but recently also purchased a Sub mount bracket kit for my '07 YZ450F, and the Scotts damper unit works with both bikes, in 5 min. I can swap rthe unit from bike to bike, saving me $300 by not having to buy another damper unit.
