a big hi to everyone,im new to the forum..my name is Si, and i live in essex in the UK..i bought a 1995 kx500 nine months ago completely stripped, since then i have completely re built the beast, with a few mods, frame and swinging arm are powder coated black, full supermoto kit ie..black talon hubs, black exel rims, braking 320mm front disc, talon wavey rear disc, fmf gnarley pipe, fmf 2002 grahics kit with seat cover, graphite renthal fat bars etc etc,but the real tool is the engine with a cr500 conrod to alter the stroke,+40 wiseco piston kit, barrel work done by a top uk 2 strke king, crank lightened and balanced, she is now fully road legal...soon i will find a pair of radiators and i will be blasting around the countryside

Welcome to the site! :-D :-D

An awesome machine you have there Si! Welcome to pitbull! Don't hessitate to ask any questions you might have about your bike as we have quite a few people here with the same intrests as yourself. :-)

thanks for the welcome guys,if anyone out there has any spares (pair of 1995 radiators)to sell please drop me a line..when i bought the bike i set a budget of ?1700 to complete the re build, now im past ?3000 and new rads will cost another 300,SO IM LOOKING FOR A GOOD USED PAIR.... :-D

Sounds like the weapon! Good to have ya here!

thanks for all the welcome notes guys (and hopefully ladies).lots of work has gone into the kx this weekend,so its nearly finished, soon i will bore everyone with pics very soon..im looking forward to seeing how big the comparisons are ridingn the kx straight after riding my other bike (husqvarna smr570, 61bhp at the rear wheel).the guy who did the engine work on the kx says i should be aiming for around 70-72 rwbhp with my 580 conversion but i think he is being very optomistic..does anyone else run the same kx/cr conversion ? :?
-
:wink:thanks guys for putting me onto a pair of rads on e bay usa,its 2.30am here in the uk but with some frantic bidding i bought both sides,so the sportsbike guys around the essex country lanes will have their hands full when the moto,d kx5 is chasing them, the angry wasp is ready to fly(nearly)...would any of you guys know of a sidestand kit on the market ? :-)
-
This one looks good to me. I've often thought I should get one but have never got round to it.

CR conrod you say?
Sounds familliar, it's not Zanxs old bike is it?
Mebbe not as I thought his was a 93 or thereabouts.
Anyway, welcome in.
Regards Scott.

hi scott, yes i was the fool who bought the huge jigsaw that zanx called a kx500(he promised every part was there as i loaded a frame and 8 huge boxes of bits into my van,and he did,nt let me down).i tracked down the engineer who worked out the pro,s of a cr500 rod, matched to a +40 piston.the guy wrote down the final formula i guess you would call it,and i have also spoken to another guy who still races a kx580 for a bit of cheap fun,he says its best trick is leaving honda cr500,s in his dust, followed by the cr riders scratching their heads whilst looking over his bike trying to work out how he can be so quick,i nearly gave up on this project 2 months ago but zanx talked me out of it ,and im so glad he did,cos now its in supermoto form,i think its the sexiest thing going (too many late nights working on her has left its mark)

Scarykxer, I have the Pro Moto Billet kick stand. Real world pictures (on a K5) in my photo album, Danger4u2.

thanks danger, another problem solved,my only concern is the length of the stand as my bike is in supermoto form, maybe a little cutting and welding will work.....
-
I have some photos of your cylinder from when Zanx had it and he posted up quite a thread on All Things Moto as I don't know the spec all I remember (from looking at the pictures) is that I could see that the transfer ports had been cleaned up to a knife edge.
I am glad to hear that its about ready as it's been a fair project for Zanx and you.
How dod you get on with the hubs as I seem to remember Zanx saying something about weird spacers on it?
Ebay UK is fairly crap for KX500 bits so you might find that it's better to get stuff from the US.
Regards Scott.
PS, I just realised that you must be bigpowerhusky off Visordown :-D
-
:-Dhi scott,i had the hubs and rims powder coated black, and ordered a set of spacers from talon,at their 3rd attempt they sent me the right ones, you are right about the barrel work,i just hope the engine lasts a while cos so far it has cost me a bloody fortune, ive been told 747 oil is about as good as it gets,so i will feed it nplenty of that, you were right about visordown,i chose the other name cos my other bike is a husky sm570r,which i just had dyno,d at 60.9 rwbhp,so i like annoy the ktm gang
-
I too had a major with talon. Many atempts to get me the right spacers and hubs for me bike. Very frustrating. But worth the wait. Just. Anyone seen Haan hubs?
-
Ebay USA the go,i had a complete clutch basket flown out to New Zealand for $80 USD
when my m8's K5 @%#^&! it self.

You absolutely have to tell us what you know about the KX580 stroker set up? Is can not be as simple as using a CR connecting rod and a 40+ oversize piston? Could this be also done with just the connecting and if so what cc size would that yeild?

Just changing the conrod won't alter the stroke as the cranks the same and its the difference between the height of TDC to BDC that gives you the stroke but it will alter the port timing slightly and if the conrods longer it will decrease primary compression slightly.
One other way that using a long rod motor does is mean that theres less pressure on the thrust faces of the piston which can be better for high RPM running.
An animation of this can be found on this page...
http://www.eatel.net/~stentorian/wristpinplacement.swf (http://www.eatel.net/~stentorian/wristpinplacement.swf)
Click inside the yellow circle and rotate the crank with your mouse while keeping an eye on the green piston top lines and look at the angle of rod for both the short and long rod motor.
Bear in mind that that animation wont show the difference in primary compression as that animation also has a differing gudgeoun pin (Wrist pin to the Yanks ) location.
I am only just learning about this myself so it's quite new to me also.

sorry guys for not answering your posts, not being very mechanically minded i was given a phone number of a guy who runs the same set up as me,he has actually dealt with an old engineer guy who supposedly came up with the idea,he then proceeded to build 4 engines..the guy told me to write down the following figures that mean absolutely nothing to a non engineer like me..here goes .786 X BORE DIAMETRE SQUARED X STROKE PLUS HEAD VOLUME..23cc HEAD...29.7 SQUISH..GIVING 52.7 cc OVERALL....sorry but i dont understand a word of that, but i got a marine engineer to make me a small end bearing to match the conversion with a stronger roller cage and he seems to think it made sense..i will see if i can wean anymore info out of the guy,but he said it was a long time since he had worked on a kx..the guy who did all my porting/barrell work (steve clitheroe, top uk tuner) said it was a fairly common conversion in the late 90,s with uk sidecar racers, that is as much as i could find out,so if it helps please let me know. :?
-
Hi guys,i just wondered if anyone made sense of the info i posted about my 580 conversion, seeing you have had a while to check over the figures :? :? :? :-D

Wassup guys I am new to this site and also own a 2001 KX500. I have no pics up yet of the beast but they will be coming soon. I have had this bike brand new since I was sixteen and currently still own it. Ive blown it up once in 03' and had the cylinder ported and polished and bored .20 over. It has an FMF Gnarly pipe, Boyeson Power Reeds, straight rear fender with graphics, pilot jet and main jet are also different. It gears at 14f and 45R, this thing will really scream at around 100mph. Any tips on transmission maintenance becuz the dealer tranny oil isnt cutting it.
Ian.
Long live the 500!
