Title: sleeve/cylinder deck height question
Post by: 2001KX5 on April 29, 2006, 01:11:29 PM
The sleeve in my 91 cylinder is sitting just below the deck of the cylinder.  I can just catch a nail it so maybe like 1 thousandth.

Should the sleeve height be 100% flush with the cylinder deck height? Could this cause coolant problems? Should I get the deck trued so the heights match?

I don't know if it will affect cooling. However, it will create detonation issues.

Do you mean as it is now or if I get 1 thou taken milled off the cylinder deck?

The slack could very well be taken up by the head gasket.

cylinder was dropped off today at the machine shop to mill the deck of the cylinder down to the sleeve height.  This is more for sealing purposes and well to prevent any detonation issues.  There is barely a gap there, less than 0.008 thou based on my feeler gauge.  They are also putting heli coils in some of the thread holes that are questionable.

Jesus I just want to ride!

Hang in there you will get that bike back together and it will be ready to ride.

Had the cylinder deck milled and 9 heli coils put in. It seems to fine now.

Had abuot an hours run last night and I'm impressed.

I find that compared to my buddies 03 CR250 the 500 is much easier to ride.  I like the broad power range. Now it certainly don't rev out like a 250 but jesus its powerfull!  Now I'm running a 14/51 sprocket combination because it suits most of the trails I ride on so I know a 49 or 47 tooth rear sprocket would make thing thing a speed demon. But it chugs in 2 and 3rd gear no problem and just blip the gasola any time you want to say hello to the front tire.

On decel with the throttle just about fully let off she surges up in rpm a little, its tolerable.  I'm running a 168 main, stock needle in 3rd position and a 55 pilot with the air screw about 1 1/4 turn out. It has a sleeve and Eric Goor mobetter porting with boyseen super stock reeds and a twin air filter. They are the only mods, well my cyilnder was miiled so my comp. should be up a little.

She starts and idles fine (which is strange for the 500?) and revs up to the top just fine. It doesn't feel rich or lean at any point in the throttle range but I haven't done a plug test. I may try another 1/4 turn on the air screw to see if it take it away some but its really really minor imo.

I have read that a bit of surging is fine and some say that its an indication of having jetting dialed in. If any one has any comments on my jetting it would be good. I'm just at sea level and temps range from 5-25 deg C.
