Title: Bar mount cones
Post by: hughes on March 27, 2006, 07:47:40 AM
Hey Guy's,

I am in need of some new bar mount cones. I don't want the solid one but is there anything better than the factory rubber?

Are the solid mounts my only choice over the rubbers ones? What about the vibs if I go witht e soild mounts?

Hey Hughes, to my knowledge, they are the only options. It cut down my vibes by huge amounts. You ought to try them, they really do cut down vibes alot. I was not trying to be a smartass when I said the solid ones. They really made a huge difference.

Thanks, I am thinking that the worn out rubber ones are causing some of my handling issues that I posted under suspension help. I'll try them their cheap. If I'm turn the wheel in one direction and the rut or terrain is pushing it is the other direction just alittle bit could cause the wheel to hope out of the line I am trying to take.

I'm running solid mounts as well. Much better feel no vibes. Its got a Pro Taper top clamp and bars all fully adjustable.

Hey Hughes, if Jeff does not have them MXSouth does Part #: MOTO-4-465

Desc: ALUM. BAR MNT CONES KDX $ 24.95 $ 22.45

Cross reference from MX-South the KDX is the same as the KX.

mxsouth has discontuied those mounts. They are sending me the nylon mounts. nylon should be firmer than the rubber. I 'll see how good they work.

Hughes, after seeing what you all were talking about. I think I have some that are in prime shape.
I'll make some out of the aluminum, and nylon, to see what works best..
I'll get the measurements from the stock ones.
I'll get to them as soom as  finish a job that I'm running on the leath now.

Can metal one really get rid of the vibes????
How????
Anyone????

Just a guess but, vibration is alot about natural frequencies (the amount things naturally want to vibrate).  I'll bet that the solid cones make the solid length from engine to bar end longer (with rubber it would be engine to triple clamp only) and change the natural frequency. Sorry, It's the Engineer in me. Cam. :-D

Hey Machine, how are the aluminum cones coming along? I would like to make a set myself, so would you post the dimension? The rubber cones in my bike are in bad shape  :-P and I?m a little hesitant to use them as a pattern.

Zee; I back burnered the deal since they're found in most stores.
I will still make a set. I will also post the Dim. here too.
I can only get my Dim. from the stock rubber ones, but they're in great shape.
I'll get on it Monday, that is if I remember after the weekend!???? :-D

Update. The nylon cones showed up last week. Installed them and  :-o what differance. My solid cones should arrive this week. I rode about 5 hours on sunday. If you have not checked your rubber cones lately get on it.

Excellent, when you get your solid cones, try them vs. the nylon mounts. Hopefully we can get a good comparison as my bike was not new when I changed them out.

Thanks for the update

Alan: You can't go wrong with a set, the vibs are cut noteworthy.

My vibs where cut down some with the nylon cones. With the rubber cones my clutch and brake levers would rattle like hell when I would start the engine. They barely moved when I started the engine on Sunday. I'll run back to back test nylon vers. alumn. After my dislocated tumbs heals.

Now let me get this straight, you crashed and dislocated your thumbs and got up and rode for 2 more hours! :-o :-o I hope you had some drugs or beer or something! d**n you are bunch tougher than me! :-o :-o :-o

Yes Sir. Got lucky and it popped back in with little help but hurt like hell. There was a creek about 20 yards away with cold mountian water. After leaving my hand in the creek for about 20 mins off and on. Headed back to the truck spent about 30mins in and out of the cooler with my hand. Got back on the bike and rode. I rode but didn't push to hard. Sunday night my wirst and tumb hurt so bad I had my wife take me to the ER. They put my wrist and tumb in a cast. A temp cast that they will revome in 5 days.

do the polys vibrate like the rubbers.

do the polys vibrate like the rubbers.
Rubbers vibrate the least, Poly in between rubber & solid, Solid you feel ALOT of the harmonics.

The front end of the bike has so much more postive feel to it with solid mounts. I used the polys on 87 kx500 and made a huge diff in the front end for handling. Old thread here, brings back memories.
