hi guys, thought i'd introduce myself...
i've had a love of all bikes since a very young age, and i guess its never budged. I used to race in a diesel MRA series a few years back on one of these:
2000 KTM 520SX
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/aaroncosbey/ktm.jpg)
i decided i needed more power and speed so i bought one of these:
1996 suzuki GN125 = a complete weapon (NOT)!
i garaged it for a year so i could get a no claims bonus!
meanwhile i had a slight accident on the KTM and all enthuisiam for mucky fields left me.
so i sold the crosser and got one of these:

dont worry - to satisfy my off-road urges and to dirty myself at the weekend i got one of these:
i loved the engine in this - but i just didnt get out on it enough, and because i spent all of my time on the trials 'bicycle' it had to go :-(
life was good for a while, but i often dreamt of plumes of sweet smelling smoke, and i guess my fetish for 2-strokes never left me.
So i spent about 1 year looking around for a quality 2 smoke bike, until i luckly found one of these:
My regret was not taking pictures of it before the restoration work :(
4 solid months in the garage (12th september - Xmas day 05'), while my girlfriend was in africa and out popped this:
this is one bike i plan to never part with!
anyways - all the working in the garage suddenly stopped, and i felt lost - know where to escape.
I'm now looking for another project/scheme to keep busy.
Ive always liked kawasaki's and their 'green; in your face presence. A couple of chums that used to have a hornet and ducati 998, recently sold their bikes and are looking for KTM motards for the road to get their kicks.
Then i one day i decided a KX500 would be a fun machine to ride and i did i bit of interneting to see what i could see........i came across this:
for me it was love at first sight! i had to find out more......
i had no idea that this bike had a cult following >>> the hunt had started!
trying to find one so far has'nt been easy - i've place wanted ads in a couple of papers, but no leads.......
I'm probally going to have to go the the mainland UK to get a nice one.
Buying a pre-road registered one would be easier, but if i found a really fresh, well looked after MX one i would deffinately be tempted.
anyways - this forum looks to be a very valuable source of info for KX5 owners.
Hopefully soon i'll make the club :D

Oh yeah!
When i finally get another MX bike - i'll be lookin towards a 250 diesel!

Aaron Welcome, nice toys!
I opened up an album in the Gallery section so you can post your pictures there where they won't get lost over time!

You need 2 KX500s. 1 on road 1 offroad. Life is short.
Welcome to Pitbull.
-
Welcome, I hope you can find a couple of KX500's , after you tire of the street, you can hop on the knobbie tired one and bounce off trees.
Hope the Sierra Club doesnt hear that.
-
two KX5's ........... humm
i like your style :D
-
Very nice taste!! I like the rims on the KX. What is the last photo of the KX? is that your basement? Welcome to the site!!

Sorry you need 3 K5's. 1 on road 1 off road, 1 for dunes. It gets old changing from dirt to paddle tires. I finally got an extra set of wheels so it's not so bad now.
Welcome to the site aaroncosbey,
Danger

4 wheels are better than 2.....?
-
I change mine around all the time. Depending on what type of terrain it will be unleashed upon.

Still no luck, finding a KX5 over here - a couple of people pointed me in the way of a CR500..............what an insult! :D

Scott dons his Nomex undercrackers and...
CR500s are also very capable bikes and in the UK they are far easier to find as they are arguably, better motocross bikes, not much in the way of desert over here.
KXs have more advanced engines though and the fact that they were stil making them till 2004 helps matters also.
KXs don't exactly grow on trees but when I bought my first one (the 90 model in the picture) I got a knackered 86 model thrown in the deal and more recently the apprentice at the place I was working bought one (another 90 model) and after a couple of months he flipped it which knackered the rear subframe so I got that one for 300 quid :D
It's engine works and most of it's OK apart from the rear subframe and theres a mount that needs welding up.
Few other odds and sods and I will have two full KX500s, one with knobblies and one still in supermoto trim.
So as you can tell they are out there if you know where to look.
I will keep an eye out for another and if one turns up I will contact you with details.
Personally I would not go for one any older than a 90 as that was one of the most significant specification changes and then the ones that are later than about 92 are an even better bet if you plan on turning it into a supermoto as stuff like caliper relocation brackets can be found off the shelf instead of needing to get a bloke to knock one up specially for it.

that would be spot on scott thanks,
I'd try and get one as young or as mint as possible - for obvious reasons........
there was a guy that asked a seller of a CR500 on ebay if he would like to P/X with his KX5:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4605622549&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1#ebayphotohosting
the seller sent the KX guy's address : leeparker23@blueyonder.co.uk but he hasnt replied to any emails i've sent....
Ebay community says he has a feedback of 0 (maybe he doesent check his emails often).
Its quite funny the ads i've put in the papers - people keep contacting me asking would i like to buy their Zeyphr 750!! LOL :?
anyways - on with the hunt :D

As far as I have seen over here a mint KX 500 is a bit like hens teeth and rocking horse s**te all rolled into one.
The most recent KX500 I have ever heard of over here was a 97 but bear in mind that then engines have remained unchanged since about 90, they have run the same part number for the pistons since before that and the plastics have been the same since about 88.
Since 90 and 2004 as far as I am concerned about the only significant changes (as regards turning it into a supermoto with a big brake disc decent lights) have been the forks cos the caliper mounts are different and the flywheel cos it would be nice to fit one of those E-line 200 watt flywheel weight/lighting coil and ignition cover kits.

Oh and heres a pic of Todwunches KX with the Zipty kit fitted, I have the same kit but as yet no pics.

oh - that zippy kits is nice, although the standard one with a nice chrome FMF pipe is hard to beat too!
I bet it hard to find young KX5's about - thats why i've been trying to contact the lee parker guy that was on ebay.
on with the hunt :P
