Snow is for riding in!  Up to 8" is a blast on your usual trails.  Here mid-winter after a good thaw and freeze we put a few sheetmetal screws in the knobs and go ride on the frozen snowmobile trails.  Not an iceracing setup, just 3 in the rear center for straightline traction and maybe one in every other one.  The snowmobile trails get nicely whooped up and it is a blast to wail down them. Lots of fun. Cam.

Snow is cool if you riding in it on flat ground. I've done some snow tracks on mountain trails which have been a right test. Where the track is cut into the side of a slope, the snow is deep as on the inside of the track and shallow on the outside, but also very slippery on the out side. Hairy stuff when you'r looking at straight drop of 5 or 6 hundred feet.
At Temoana (other side of the Devils Staircase) one day we had to ride through snow that started off at just a few inches. As we progressed the stuff got deeper and deeper. Past the point of no return, we plodded on at a slowing pace till the snow was waist deep at the easiest passable places. Ended up having to stomp a way through then retrieve our bikes and ride through. Stomp, ride. Stomp, ride....

  Long Day that one.

For snow rides we usually stick to spring and early fall. Once the ground is frozen it's pretty tough to go anywhere with a hill (or even stay on 2 wheels for that matter).  In my riding area, snow is at it's best in the spring.  By mid-april the ground is thawed and the trails are mostly melted but muddy.  It is sunny and warm but on most of the single track there are shady areas with 300 yd long patches of mushy snow up to 3' deep.  It's pretty good traction and you can blast through huge snowbanks without a care.  Climbing long hills is sometimes a team effort.  As you loose momentum in the deep snow, your buddy riding in your path behind you slingshots around to take the lead and break trail. And so on. Big fun. I'll take som pics this spring. Cam.

The snow is getting deep here, so I have been skiing. The snowmobile trails are off limits to motorcycles during the winter.

There was too much snow to ride in, especially on my 100.  Mother nature dumped 13 inches on us.

I went snowboarding yesterday, but it was too cold to actually enjoy it.  At the top of the mountain it was -12F.

The coldest I have skiid in is -29 F . You cant have any skin showing or it gets frostbite.
Kxcam22: do you ski at Sun Peaks or Silverstar ?  Or do you just drive to Whistler or Apex ?
I have some location envy about the Canadian Rockies. You are fortunate to live there.
My KX500 is just sitting in the garage wishing it could go for a ride.

Alan,
You're probably still wearing sunscreen.  I'll get my revenge - most of those blind old people driving motorhomes with canadian plates and clogging up your roads and golf courses are from my neighbourhood.  I'll send them to you every winter.
JS, I get a family seasons pass at Sun Peaks each year. It's about 40min from town.  Silver star is about an hour away.  Both are easy drives.  Whistler is about 6 hours but they have been getting lousy snow.   Sun Peaks has had the best ski conditions in the province the last few years so we stick around.  Still waiting for the real snow to happen. Cam.

Both dirt bikes and skiing is risky on the body.  I seem to take a worse beating on the bike.  When I ski I stay away from trees, but on the bike trails I dont have that option. I like going fast fast fast, I dont care if it is on water skis, snow skis or dirt bike. I dont know why the thrill of speed excites me but it does!  When a tiny mistake will cause great bodily harm, that is when I want to go faster. Why else would I get rid of a perfectly good 250 and buy a KX500? I was told the top speed of my KX500 was about 96mph with stock sprockets. All I know is that my eyes shake real bad when I am at full throttle and the trees wizz by real fast.

I miss skiing. Havent been in probably 6 years. I've been to Titus Mountain, NY.. Red River, NM.. Breckinridge, CO.. Keystone, CO.. Arapaho Basin, CO.. Hoodoo, OR and Mt Hood Meadows, OR.  I have been planning on making it at least once this year since I am now living in Washington and have friends here that ski while most of my skateboarding buddies down in Oregon were more into snowboarding which I havent been too fond of even though I have given it a try about 3 times. Deffinitely an expensive sport/hobby.
