Title: drag racing a kx500???
Post by: reknelb on November 19, 2005, 04:09:32 AM
OK, the kx survived the divorce and the for sale sign. A friend of mine is getting into some drag racing at the local 1/8 mile track here. I'm thinking I could turn the kx into a pretty quick 1/8 mile bike and have some fun. I only rode the thing twice in the dirt last summer sooooo I figured why not???? Any suggestions for engine set-up, or just some good ole comments about how I shouldnt ruin a perfectly good kx. All is appreciated.  :P

I once saw a CR500 that ate everything.  He used it as a road racer too.  I doubt anything would touch a tuned KX in the 1/8 mile. Cam.

REPEATED HOLESHOTS WILL BEAT UP THE COUNTERSHAFT PRETTY GOOD, SET ASIDE A FEW BUCKS FOR A SPARE.

Autoclutch like revloc/EFM/rekluse with a holeshot divice and small enough easy rolling tires on, you will win most races in that short distance.

Should I lose the stock wheels and mount up some alum. 17" or something along those lines?

So I talked to a drag racing dude on a racing site and he said to use the 19 rear, and go with a kx80 front end (17"). Throw a strut in place of the shock, lower it to 2" min. ground clearence and hit the track.   Sounds like a plan to me. I just cant decide wether I want to extend the swing-arm or not. I'll keep you guys posted.

Extend the swingarm and get a stupidly knobby tire. I've found that fresh Trackmasters with 50% knobbies (center only) removed makes a paddle tire effect. Still having problems with front tire lifting though. I purchased a 6in. extended swingarm. I'm considering going 12 inches by adding extensions instead of a custom swingarm. TRS makes them. I figure I could add them to my custom arm now. Then I could go as far as 18 inches out. For that possible inline four I might soon install when I get some time.

Are you talking about grass draging or asphalt? Sounds sweet either way 8)

For asphalt racing, you would definately need a serious extension to keep the front end planted. But I was referencing grass/hard packed racing. Both are extremely fun and worth every $ spent. :-)

I'm hoping to find out how they drag this summer

They do friday night drags here and let ya run about anything! I was racing the street bike and ran against a 600cc snowmobile with a smoothy track one night.

I've got 17's on my kx 500 for supermoto and wanna run it in the quarter, I think it should break into the high 11's - low 12's. I haven't got to ride it after doing the 540 kit and nsome other stuff though.

Have also heard of people grinding back the axle slide hole on the swingarm to get a little extra wheelbase, have never tried it myself though.
