Been trying to set the timing on my 1979 Kx125 a5, cant get the marks to line up. Its like there's not enough travel in the stator plate. so i cant move it far enough to line things up.. I've verified that the TDC mark is correct. And with the head off I used my dial indicator to set it static. With the engine running , the timing light shows that its not advanced enough and as i said you can't move the plate far enough to get things to line up. Any ideas, help or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Rick

must not be to many vintage mx guys over here. just looking for a little info and or input. Thanks

You need to get the service manual for the specs.

Are the stator wires behind the plate or through the case hung up or not long enough possibly? This happened to me on the KX500 and limited how far I could rotate the stator until I freed them.
-
yes I used the specs in the manual, and it said to set the marks with the piston a certain distance btdc and line the marks up but the slots in the stator plate would not allow it to go far enough. when i get home tonite i will take a couple pictures.

I had an A5 when they were new. By far my most favorite 125.

Brother had one , rode it once , the magazines picked on it for hard shifting under full power , i was to young to ride it like that so i ask you on your experience on the shifting side of things . cant believe what they say half the time.

I don't recall it being hard to shift under power, but then again that was 40 years ago. :-)

mine shifts fine, just grip it and rip it.
finally solved my ignition problem, it seems to have been a 2 fold issue. bad cdi box, so i was trying to compensate for that with the timing. then installed another box but didn't go back and reset the timing so it was still not running right. that's when i went back to square one, pulled the head AGAIN , put the dial indicator back on and found that the timing was all jacked up. Reset that and its now running good. I have some fine tuning to do but I think I'm on the home stretch now. Now if they would lift this d**n quarantine so we can go racing !!!!
