Title: Impeller seal??
Post by: reklessj on November 21, 2018, 12:22:53 PM
Took my baby out for it's first ride after sitting for 9 months. Ran great but now no coolant in rads and oil sight  glass over full. Hoping it's just impeller seal. Any thoughts? :-(

Yep!!
It was only like a ten minute ride,  Just to make sure she was ready for the big weekend. Didn't notice till I pulled off the stand to load her up. Oil coolant mixture on the stand from vent I suppose

Bingo!  :-)
Though until you actually pull it apart, you won't know for sure, but there's a 99.99% probability that's the problem.
Once they sit for a prolonged amount of time, they do dry out/rot, and the shaft can get rusty/pitted.
Try to fire her
up every few weeks if you think it's gunna be a while til your next outing...keep things lubricated.

No, it can be done without splitting the motor.

So has any body used any of these oversized impellers that come with a spacer for the cover? I've seen a few different ones on eBay. From the stuff I read the impeller size doesn't matter as much as getting a tighter tolerance and smoother n larger coolant ports n channels

Sandblaster was working on some cooling stuff for the 500.  He might be the guy to ask.

If I remember correctly, Dave (Motorrad) was doing some impeller and housing mods a few years ago, Sandblaster could've been involved in it too...I think it was in the "K5 Cooling" thread.

Yeah I was reading it on oem-cycle  I think I get the jist of that whole theory. Although I was about to put my head through the wall when I was done. Lol too tech for me man, Dave has a tendency to do that to me. I sure do miss him being round here

Me too, he brought a lot of knowledge to the table, and not just about bikes.

Yeah, David and I did a lot of those kinds of things.
He'd post a idea and I would see if I could get it done before him

Anyhow, there is a company that is coming out with a KX500 impeller kit that works better then any other of the big impeller kits.
We found that some of the big impeller kits didn't cool as well as the stock impellers did  :-o

I think we all miss Motorrad to some degree...
He inspired a lot of us to do some really cool things and some really dumb ones
But it was certainly fun  8-)

So I'm finally getting around to fixing my issues. One more question I can't for the life of me find the MOS2 Grease that the manual calls for lubing the seal and shaft. Is there any other options for the type of Grease I can use?
