-
:-D that is where it all be gain for me.
-
Lol...nice...it didn't begin for me there, but it's always been one of my favorite places!
-
Hallo Newbie from New England. I'm a newbie from Olde England, but living in Mexico.
-
Welcome aboard Streetsleeper.
What brought ya to Mexico?

Hiya Foxx4Beaver,
I ended up here for the usual reason - a woman. Nine years and two kids later I'm still here. Never seen the sea let alone a beach. We split for a while so I'm now paying alimony, even though we never married. Anyway, that's all a long story. I'd like to say thanks for the welcome - you're the first!
I shall have to learn my way around the site so I can upload pics, though I read somewhere that the site doesn't actually host them as it's too expensive. Also read that if I want to add some things to my name (dunno if that's short message or emoji type thing) then I need to do so before I post ten posts - any pointers would be appreciated.
I've already got an idea for a new thread but busy with the kids this weekend. As for the bike, well it's an '87. Yep, that's gonna be a pain in the arse. It has suffered some typical Mexican abuse: sticking non metric bolts in metric threads; what looks like a KDX200 exhaust (it'll never run right until I sort that out); broken parts here there and everywhere.
My biggest fear is the engine, I read that the '87 had KIPS stickers, and mine has got raised letters inside a rectangle - I just hope to hell it isn't a KX250 cylinder on there but until I can positively identify it, or measure the bore, I shan't know.
I look forward to chatting to you guys and gleaning some info - should be fun. Hope to get the bike started this week, or at the very least find out if there are serious problems not yet visible. So, thanks again Foxx4Beaver!

Hi streetsleeper, welcome to best place for KX500 knowledge. Posting pictures on the site is very easy, as we're now set up to host our own pictures. Here are instructions on how to do it:
http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,17107.0.html (http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,17107.0.html)
The avatar is the only thing you have to have 10 posts to add. All the signature stuff should be available from the start. If you run in to any issues getting it posted, please shoot me a message and I'll work on it for you. Please be patient with me, I own a retail shipping business, and it's our insane time. :-D
I went back to the parts fiche for the KX500, and the 1986 and 1987 models had the sticker for the KIPS valves so you should be fine on the cylinder. In 1988 (and beyond) they switched to the embossed KIPS logo.
As for the other stuff, I can only imagine how much fun you will have undoing the Mexico Modifications. Keep us posted on your progress and any problems you run in to.

You're welcome. Looking forward to seeing some pics once you figure out how to.
The majority of personal pics I post, come right off my Facebook page...actually, I myself find it easier and quicker to just right click an existing pic from there, and paste it into the "insert image" option from here, and hit "post".
I know all too well about moving for women!! Over the past 22 years, I've lived in Atlanta, GA...Dallas, TX...and Bar Harbor, ME...no more moving for me! I've been back in my hometown now for 12 years, and picked up waaaaaay to good of a job in 2008 to ever consider leaving, for anything ever again.
As stated, you do need to hit 10 posts to add an avatar, but that won't take long...just jump into a couple threads and ask questions, or share some info.
I honestly won't be much help concerning questions about your bike...I never played around much with the older K5's...but there's a couple guys on here that're wizards with them.

Thanks to Foxx4Beaver and Umberto for the replies.
Actually, I think I worded my post badly. Although it's an '87 bike according to the frame no. the cylinder has KIPS embossed inside a rectangle on it (so it's definitely not an 87 cylinder - and worries the heck outta me thinking about what I've actually got).
As for the 10 posts, I got that the other way round too. I need at least ten posts!
Thanks also for info on the pictures side of things. Gonna try that out in a minute. First I'll post in reply to you two, and then put some pics in the section dedicated to that for anyone interested.
Do either you, or does anyone else know how to use italics? I tried it but got some bits in brackets either side of the word I wanted to italicise.
Feels good to have made a start. I've not used one of these sites for about ten years and have forgotten everything.

If it is a newer cylinder/motor, that would be a good thing. The 88 and up motors had beefier bottom ends, and parts interchange from 89 all the way to 2004. Getting some pictures posted would help us ID the motor.
As for the italics, you will need to type your post between the brackets. For example, [italic]word or phrase I want to be in italic[/italic]. The word italic in the brackets in my example would actually be a lower case i in real life. Most of the special characters, such as a web link, use this same format.

No problem.
When you're on the page to post a message, just click the Italics icon...the one right next to the B. Then just set your cursor in the center and type your message

As a matter of fact, I used the B icon on my previous message...to make the words "insert image" and "post" in Bold letters. When using the bold option, click the B, just set your cursor between the two...and you'll have bold 8-)
Here is what clicking the italiac icon looks like

Hallo again to everyone at MXRiders.com!
Here are a couple of pics of an '87 KX500 (frame is anyway - according to what I've read) I bought about 2-3 months back.
Thanks to Umberto and Foxx4Beaver for some pointers.
All I've done so far is strip it so far, clean it, drain it, and look at it.
I haven't gone any further as I want to see if she starts.
One big problems will be (what I think is) the KDX200 exhaust, but wait until you see the carburettor.
I'd be ever so grateful for any comments and input, and of course advice in the future - especially with identifying parts fitted.
I can only apparently post two pics at once so there's more to follow.
Regards, streetsleeper (a name I used on another site when I had a home-tuned 1960 Lambretta back in the UK). Jonnie

Post a pic of the other side of the bike....so we can get a good gander at that pipe.
-
Foxx4Beaver, thanks. I might have one or two. The bike's in my kitchen and turning it round is a pain - these house were originally built by the conquistadores but have been partitioned up to rent.
Here's another pic taken same day, but I've lots more.
Umberto too, thanks for more advice, all very useful.
Someone (on this site I think) said he tried to get his Mikuni IDd but was told by Mikuni it was a one off for Kawasaki. I couldn't ID the stamps on it but it's a 38 (wait until you see what you called a "Mexican Modification"!).
-
That motor appears to be an 86-88. The 88 was not black, but it might have been painted. Those year motors had the bolt on coolant elbow on the left side of the head.
That carb is really bad. It's going to need a lot of TLC for sure.

Ahh, no problem...do what ya can. I keep my bikes indoors too, so I know what you mean.
-
Mmnn - anyone can tell me what I did wrong there - or how to right it?
Here's a couple of the cylinder, and part of the (KDX200?) exhaust.
-
OK, Umberto, so it looks definitely like an 86-88 as it's got the coolant elbow on the LHS of the head.
Still having some issues as you can see!

A couple more...

and a couple more....

Last one for now. Gotta take the kids out. Thanks very much both of you for your help. I shall take some more and download from phone to compu to site.
