Title: 2200 miles on a KX500? Yes, Alex is really crazy...
Post by: sandblaster on September 11, 2018, 05:06:14 PM
Here is a blurb from Alex:

Getting prepped to do this run end of September first part of October. About 2200 miles. Going to end in Vegas and attend the AIM expo. As little pavement as possible, trail, and back roads. Here is the kicker, my lifelong friend and I have decided to do it on a couple of special prepped Kawasaki KX 500's. Not adventure bikes, but this had ought to be one heck of one. More info and pics to come. We have been planning thise for almost 2 years so we hope we can pull it off with very little support. Yes we will be packing fuel and spare pre-mix. Engines balanced, set up for pump gas, WPC tested transmissions and more..

Whoa there fella... Not me.... It's a lot of work and I have too many projects going on...
Jason is doing it here at the shop on some builds he's doing.
I'm not sure if he wants to do it or not on a individual basis.
To do it right takes a lot of time...
What do you need done?

Oh yes... Alex does it as well....

I figured this thread would be a good plug if you were.  I would love to do the calipers (and now the cases) on my aluminum bike, but I think I need to quit at some point before I go completely nuts.   :-D

Top notch sandblaster, was that a sneaky shot of the enemy CR5OO in the back ground?

Have you used the flex bars before with any good results?
Title: Re: 2200 miles on a KX500? Yes, Alex is really crazy...

Oh yeah... Playing with the pink bikes helps us to understand what the dark side is all about...

I've never used the Flexx bars personally but I will be using them on my KtX500e build so I will have some feedback them.
But, Alex will beat me too it for his 2200 mile ride.

Awesome sandblaster just let me get the calculator for the metric conversion  :-)

Is there a need to increase the oil capacity for any greater reliability by slightly lifting the cover off the clutch pack with a spacer?

.25 / .03937 = 6.3500127000254mm  :-o

Is there a need to increase the oil capacity for any greater reliability by slightly lifting the cover off the clutch pack with a spacer?

I've never added any extra thickness... but then I always dump in the entire bottle of oil in so I've always been about 50ml over the recommended volume of oil. And the wider you make the clutch cover stick out the more you will need to mod your rear brake lever.

2200 miles shouldn’t be that tough. I put a barrel of c12 through my kx every winter with minimal maintenance. Usually a piston every season as I find they are much easier to change when they are in one piece.

Alex's bike was started and ran a bit today so all he has to do is tie up some wiring and fiddle with jetting and he is ready to roll.
Jason's bike needs a bit more work...

Very interested in this thread.  I'll read it tonight.
I have been working on a plan of doing a Bun Burner Gold on a KX500.
That's 1500 miles in less than 24 hours.  Thinking about doing it all in Oklahoma City (Okc).
I've done an In-City Insanity Okc Saddle Sore 1000. 1000 miles in less than 24 hours never leaving Okc.
That's 18 laps of Okc.  I did it on my 1995 Kawasaki Voyager XII.
Most likely I'll have to settle for a Saddle Sore 1000.  A person really needs a 350 mile range for the
Bun Burner 1500. That would be hard to do on a KX500.
Congratulations on your ride.
