Looks like a fun project! Did you find this build, or was it Oscar?
-
It came down through Destry Abbott as he is good friends with Oscar and Sunny.
-
Ok... We got the engine in from Oscar and Jason and I started right in on it.
From the outside it looks about right for the age..
The next step is to pop the head and measure the port timing.
And of course measure and record the head step, overall thickness, gasket thicknesses, ect.

-
So much fun...
Next, I split the crank halves and cleaned them up a bit.
Remember, if you want a dirty crank in your bike, send the crank builder a dirty crank...
You'll get back a dirty crank with a nice new rod :-o
Normally we do all our own porting but this time we are sending the head and cylinder to Tom Morgan at TMR for one of his world famous port jobs.
Also, he will true, balance, and assemble the crank for us. Normally Jason or I do our own porting but this is a collaborative effort with Tom, Racer X magazine, Jay Clark, and others. We have another project that we will be working with Tom on in the future for another Motocross action magazine build so stay tuned.

This looks like it's going to be a fun build. Are you doing the same stuff to the suspension that you did to Groot?
-
I love these projects. Keep the updates coming.
-
Very F'n cool!!!
-
Nothing says cool like Bormi Parts.. 8-)
More Sunny Garcia hardware...
How about a Bormi Parts KX500 swingarm ready for a 450 rear wheel and brake set up 8-)

Awesome build! cool guy too! Any hint as to what direction on the porting? curious what type of riding you guys are aiming for this bike :-D
-
The porting will be for minimal increased power everywhere but a smoother more linear power.
-
Not sure if you can get F.I.R Titanium engine mounts for the KX 500 in the States?

Also seen some nice looking 500 silencer mounts on ebay!!

Nice

I'm sure that these will put a smile on Sunny's face..

-
Oh it will!! It did mine!! Glad u all hooked up with Tom he is a good dude. Super cool can't wait to see how this one turns out
-
You have your finger in many pies sandblaster :-)
Keep up the good work and good luck with the build.
-
Something cool showed up this afternoon.
Tom Morgan Ported, polished, head re-cut, decomp, the works.
I have played with a lot of porting myself and for a good all around MX port job this would be hard to beat.
More power everywhere..
You must run good fuel..
This will do the job.

Is Tom still saying C12 and Redline?
-
He sent a spec sheet, I'd have to look..
-
So... who would take a Italian made custom aluminum gas tank made for a KX500 and try to polish it?
Before
(http://www.oem-cycle.com/forum/download/file.php?id=7138)
After
(http://www.oem-cycle.com/forum/download/file.php?id=7139)
Still a little hazy but you get the idea..
-
This is a Tom Morgan Racing balanced and assembled KX500 Crank assembly with a Wossner rod.
Something of note... There was no heavy metal used in the balancing of the crank.
Weight was removed but none was added.
For me, that is the best way to balance.
-
What is the litreage of the tank and the significance of the aluminium?
-
I don't even know how many gallons it holds let alone know the liters :-o
Aluminum looks cool.. and I believe it is lighter then the plastic tank... 8-)

Any good to you or others on here?? Fit many models from 88 to 2003

Yes, he has 17 products specific to the KX500 that you can find here:
https://titanclassics.com/product-category/kawasaki-parts/kx500/ (https://titanclassics.com/product-category/kawasaki-parts/kx500/)
Everything is awesome!
And the Rear brake TITANIUM caliper pin bolt. 92043-1508 can be cut and ground to be used for a adjustable governor rod adjustment bolt to make your kips open and close as you like :-)
-
Ps... this build is still ongoing... mainly waiting for parts.

Cool you already know about him, I did not see his brake pins but did see you mod one on a youtube video 👍🏼
-
"Mod" is just another word for messin stuff up
-
That is a bunch of interesting angles on the tank. Are you going to put water (or fuel) in it and check volume? Not sure I would go through the effort unless it was larger than stock.

No, I won't put anything in it except for some race gas :-D
But I'll know how much approx that it will hold.
Jason hand lapped all mounting surfaces on the cases and performed all of KX Guru Racing case mods to improve lubrication... 8-)
Just need a trip through the vapor blaster and oven and they will be ready for assembly..

Hit the Bormi web site and after mining their site found the gas tank gallery.
http://www.bormiparts.com/gallery-3.html
They make a lot of nice parts! The KX and CR tanks don't really look bigger to me but they sure are pretty.
-
I'm not sure I could do an aluminum tank. That first dent would be hard to take.
-
Dents/punctures aren't really a big deal with aluminum/metal tanks...a skilled metal worker can smooth dents out like new. There's a guy out on Cape Cod that specializes in metal motorcycle tank repair, his work is flawless...you think you're just being handed a brand new tank.

One thing I noticed about this picture is the bend at the front top. It looks like introduced stress and a good place for a crack to form at the weld. I hope that is not the case.

One case has been pre-cleaned... :-o

By Oscar Cota:
So our Sunny Garcia kx500 project has come to an successful end! Unfortunately for now I can't post too many photos of the bike as Racer X has first dibs on showing off the final product! Look for the video and magazine to come out in the next couple of months. Sunny and the entire magazine staff, including former Supercross pro racer and test rider David Pingree, we're absolutely stunned and Beyond impressed with our latest creation! David Pingree made multiple comments each time he came off the track such as " there is absolutely zero vibration, this thing corners and holds a line like you couldn't believe, this thing is totally on par with new bikes, this is the most in-depth build we have ever had!" I don't want to give away too many more quotes, you will just have to wait for the magazine to come out LOL! This build was definitely a nerve-wracking experience. I thought the Sean Collier build was stressful, but this one was definitely one for the books! I cannot stress just how much I appreciated and how invaluable the assistance and support from Alex Ward was. There were many small details and some major setbacks towards the end of this build that Alex pulled a miracle off for us. KX Guru Racing would not be what it is and would be lost without Alex that is for sure! In the end, the entire magazine staff was thrilled and told us the bike completely exceeded any expectation they had for this build! Sunny definitely has the most unique and best kx500 on this planet! Click on each picture to read the caption.

I’m excited to see the final product. Will it be in the magazine only, or online?

I have no idea... I'm just the flunky hanging onto Oscar's shirt tails :-D
Likely both..
After the magazine comes out I'll post up some pics if I'm allowed to.

Comments from Oscar Cota:
Although the tank we used was impressive by itself, we complimented it with some stainless fasteners and these trick billet tank brackets supplied by our good friend Jonathon Bell.
These pieces will never be seen however that is not a reason to run the old stuff. Everything that could be replaced with with brand new parts was replaced.
There was nothing wrong with the OEM 2001 kicker (on the right) on Sunny's bike..... but we felt that the newer style 2003-2004 beefier OEM Kickstarter was a requirement! In case you didn't know, you can no longer purchase the older style kicker, if you order an OEM kicker you will get the new style.
This item will receive much abuse on the bottom of the bike however it was still no reason to leave it alone. Vapor blasted, polished, cerakoted clear and installed new bearings!
Cerakote was used on many items for this build. However we were cautious do not overdo it. A build can go from exotic to tacky very fast if you're not careful.

Nice job with the cerakote! That stuff is a tricky process to get just right. I did several pieces on my K5 over the winter. It looks good when new but I'm interested to see how well it holds up to off-roading. Unfortunately I don't think it stands up to well to contact...

I have done a lot of Cerakote. Air Dry and oven dry. The Oven cure is more durable, it also says it is when you look at the rating of each series on the site. Nothing is bullet proof. I would much rather Cerakote a lot of this stuff than powder coat for many reasons. The Cerakote have done on my bikes and bike I see regularly I can say that it all holds up very well.

It's a sad day for Sunny, his family, and all the guys at KX Guru Racing..
Rest in peace Sunny.

Hopefully that news is premature https://www.google.com/search?q=sunny+garcia&oq=Sunny+Garcia&aqs=chrome.0.0l6.376j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 my thoughts go out to him and his family and friends at this time, depression is a bitch and a silent killer (Brian Swink recently😢) the inner struggle can be to keep on keeping on!
I think when you have led a fast life in your early days (myself included) the remainder can be a bit down hill slope, your brain almost does not allow you to see the positives going on around you, self medicating with drink or drugs only goes so far, I found that going back to the gym (like Tyson Fury) has kept the demons away and opened up new lines of thought process!

WTF I pray that he pulls through these times n gets the help he needs!! I have close family that have issues 😞 n it's tough times!! This is definitely a bummer
-
This is so sad. Often as men we are told to "be tough", and that emotions are for girls. Depression is not something you can control, it's a disease and like any disease you have to manage it. You can't just rub some dirt on it and get back in there. You have to find healthy outlets, and in many cases you must take medication. I'm praying for Sunny and his family.

Wish it was better news, but it could be worse!!
