Title: How old is my kx125?
Post by: Chopperclark on March 10, 2017, 02:59:48 AM
Hi could anyone help me please, I've just bought my first mx bike a 2002 kx 125 or so I was told. After checking the VIN number using the tenth digit method it's showing up as a 1990 model which doesn't seem right. I checked on the kawasaki parts website and according to that it's a 2000 model. The VIN number is JKAKX125LLA013XXX I'm also in the UK if that helps.

The U.S. bikes and the U.K. bikes use different VIN#'S....there are other ways to decipher it's year, by #'s on the cylinder and carb.

Post a pic if you can...that can help too.

here's what a new 2000 looked like...

I'd go with what Kawasaki Parts website says it is.  The frame sure looks identical to the 2000 model posted above.

Tighten that chain and get some WD40 on the motor and frame parts and ride it!

My 2001 US model has 1960 cast on the left side of the cylinder.

I can check my 1999 later today.

Year 2000 that's what I'm thinking gonna sort the bike out over the next couple of weeks and give it a blast trying not to kill myself in the process, only ever had road bikes so it should be interesting.

Mine has 1921stamped not sure what this is though, I wonder if your 1999 bike has a lower number?

My 1999 has the number 1881 on the cylinder, however, I don't know for sure if this is a dependable year of manufacture identifier.

The 1999 & 2000 KX125 models came with the Keihin Carburetor (with TPS) like yours and the 2001/2002 models came with the Mikuni.

Good info DoldGuy. I missed it because half of my 01 motor is in boxes due to a bad lower bearing.

I wonder if this holds true to Chopperclarks UK bike and also if the casting numbers have any bearing to year of manufacture.

So the casting # seems to be true to the year for these models.

Thanks Sandblaster for the link. I have it bookmarked but the 5 inches of new snow here have me a little out of tune.
