Been riding a 1990 KX500 for 20 something years now and FINALLY upgraded to a aluminum framed bike. Was thinking of doing it myself with the motor in my '90 but found one somewhat local at a price I couldn't pass up.
It's a 2005 CRF250R and the engine numbers show the motor to be a 1997 and it was just rebuilt when bike was converted. I am considering swapping my '90 in because we machined the transmission shaft to accept two circlips on third gear and plasti gauged the dogs. Motors been nothing but perfectly reliable for hundreds and hundred of desert miles but we' ll see.
Rode the new bike at Cahuilla MX this last weekend and OH MY GOD is it a Cadillac compared to the old school bike! So smooth, so roomy, so easy to move around on, so agile and so well behaved jumping.
Bike has Scott's stabilizer, Acerbis 2.9Gal tank, Talon hubs front and rear and came with complete set of extra front and rear rims and tires.

Nice looking bike. I'm Getting more inspired to finish my Rmz500
Whats the idea behind 2 C clips on third?
-
Sweet!
I've posted one very similar in the "KX500's" thread for sale....on craigslist.

The 3rd gear snap rings are notorious for breaking causing the bike to have two neutrals :-)
Some guys machine a wider snap ring groove to accept a second snap ring.
What I have found is that most bikes with the 3rd gear snap ring problem have other issues that cause the snap ring to fail in the first place.
Worn gear dogs, worn out shift forks, poor shifting habits, and improper maintenance to name a few.
And I'm sure there are a few snap rings that failed because they were weak.
If you have a snap ring fail, get out your service manual and carefully measure and compare your readings for the shift fork fingers as well as the pin that rides in the shift fork drum slots. Measure the slots in the shift drum in several places, especially where there are bends in the slots.
Check out the dogs on the gears as well as the slots of the mating gears.
Likely you will find other issues that caused or greatly contributed to the snap ring failure. :-o :-D
One more thing... Any time we pull a K5 trans... we replace all the snap rings and, we only open them just enough to get the ring over the shaft.

At the time in the mid 90s I was working in a machine shop owned by a guy that rode motocross. We would buy, fix and sell bikes on the side as well as made some pretty radical conversion. My bike was one that we were going to flip as it had a transmission issue but once fixed and I rode it I knew I wanted to buy him out of his share.
We tore the transmission down and found thru a measurement and a magnifying glass that the groove the circlips rode in was slightly tapered like this \/ and that allowed the clip to jump out of the groove and the gear to disengage. Machining the groove wider to where it was now vertical left plenty of room between gears and two circlips fit perfectly side by side.

And she's technically mine!
Was a little nervous about how much grief the CA DMV was going to give me as it was registered in Montana, never in California, I didn't bring it into the state and of course the engine change which they never questioned where or who it came from.
I had more trouble registering my 1990 KX500 which was unregistered for 12 years although I owned it the entire time. Had 3 DMV visits and a CHP visit just to make it legal.
Love the engine number ;)

Spent all weekend in Glamis Sand Dunes and rode the bike 4 times.
Had a blast carving fresh bowls and taking it to the sand drags. It had rained there earlier in the week so there was much virgin sand to ride on.
The two YZ250s are my wife's.

This is at Oldsmobile Hill where of course you drag race up it.

Wive's being plural? and a bike each! Jokes
How do you compare the power characteristics to the original k5. does the modified cr5 pipe really work how they should on these bikes.
-
Did you pick that bike up in Acton? That looks like one I was eye ballin'....I was denied by congress (aka the wife)

Just one wife, beleive me one is enough. Lol
The power seems almost identical to my 1990 KX500 with a standard pro circuit pipe. This bike has great tractor power down low and comes on strong until Mac rpm. It might actualy have more over rev than the 1990 I have.

Yes, it is the Acton bike! Beleive me I jumped on buying it as soon as I got the go ahead from Congress.
Drove 140 miles each way and was pleasantly surprised to see Talon Hubs, Scott steering stabilizer, Acerbis gas tank and complete set of extra wheels ready to swap on. None of that was in the ad.

Very nice. I'm in Riverside if you ever want to go burn some fuel.
-
Be a drive for you but will be at Pala MX this Saturday with it.
-
If my desert plans fall through, I might join you. Never been to Pala. I'm a vet track guy :-D Drive isn't bad, only an hour
-
I've not been there either yet. Usually ride Cahuilla but they are having a race on the VET Sunday so Saturday will be a mad house of guys practicing on it.
Palas race on Sunday is the amateur track.
If plans do fall thru stop by, I'll have the white CRF that doesn't sound like a 250. Lol
-
Don't think I left you hangin.......not only did my plans fall through, but somebody needed my truck more than me :x. I woke up to an empty driveway...at least the bikes were still in the garage
-
Oh F Word that sucks, sorry to hear. I had a old 4Runner stolen years ago and was sickened by the though of all the blood and sweat I put into that truck. Hopefully it returns!
Pala's Vet track it pretty sweet btw. Just over a mile in length and very good flow. I'm not a super good rider or anything but wasn't anything I couldn't do.
-
Awesome....when I get back on track, we'll have to meet up
-
Will be at Cahuila Creek MX on Sunday if anyone in SoCal wants to ride with.
-
Not me riding it but my bike at Cahuilla. This guy walked up and was asking tons of questions and I offer for him to take a few laps.

Arg, we'll be back weekend after this one...

Ordered some jets and pilots for our trip to Idaho and Wyoming at the end of the month.
We're staying at a RV park next to a motocross track, hitting up St. Anthony sand dunes and Killpecker sand dunes all of which are 5,000'+.
-
Heading to Pala MX on Saturday. Bike got air filter cleaned and stabilizer put back on.

Rode a little bit today at St. Anthony sand dunes in Idaho. Drove up from St. George and even after a 8 hour drive I managed to get some seat time in before sunset.
Got the paddle tires swapped on and will ride proper tomorrow!
Love motocross vacations!

nice pic....beautiful scenery.

Not sure if this is the right area but since it's a threat I started I'll post it here. I found this fifteen-year-old brand new Kawasaki Hawaiian shirt 10 miles from my house for $20. Couldn't pass it up!

Bought a stock sized CRF250 gas tank on eBay to replace the oversized aftermarket one. The big one works good but I'll save it for Glamis, Saint Anthony or the desert. It's too cumbersome for motocross.

Finally had the suspension serviced and re-sprung for my weight. It was well past due per my suspension guy, he said the oil had many many hours on it and he changed all the shims too as they showed signs of wear. Changed all the seals, bushings, shock bumper, ect.
Racing REM at Glen Helen this saturday and cant wait to feel how it rides now!
