Hello I'm new to the site, I have an 85 kx 250, was out riding it this weekend and my clutch stopped engaging, had no problems shifting, but I couldn't clutch to use the back brake or stop the bike. The cable was still connected the are that works the clutch, but that arm wouldn't grab anything, I could just spin it, I tool it out but have no idea what it does on the inside of the crank case, I don't know much about this bike it was given to me by a friend, I'm assuming I need to split the crank case to fix this, but would like some input as to what to expect when I do it. I will try and attach a pic of the arm I'm talking about.

I would take off the clutch side cover and see what condition the clutch actuation arm is in. It goes from the lever you are holding to the other side to activate the clutch in the center. If the bike would still move, but you can't get the clutch to work, it sounds like you've lost the connection that spreads it apart. You would not have to split the cases to fix the issue with your clutch, but I would recommend using an OEM parts fiche on rockymountainatvmc.com (http://rockymountainatvmc.com) or a similar site so you can see what it's supposed to look like. Take pictures of your progress, and please feel free to ask more questions. We'll try to be better about answering them. :-D

So I took it apart, found that the clutch nut had worked its self loose guess the previous owner had been in there a couple of times and maybe he didn't tourqe it down to the spec, so the push road wasn't able to be pushed and work the clutch. Simple fix thank you for the input guys I appreciate it very much, while I was in there I fixed the return spring in the kick start which makes it much easier to start now.

That's a nice looking bike. How long have you had it?

About a year, haven't had a lot of time to ride it. But I've been making my way out to ballinger canyon and rockfront, I like those spots much more then riding the pismo dunes. The antelope valley is where my family lives so when I visit for the holidays I bring the bike and have a blast.

I also have a 1985 kx250 clutch not working i can pull the handle and it acts like handle isnt pulled in iv pulled clutch cover found inner hub broke replaced inner hub and still not working any ideas on what im miss also torqued everyrhing to spec spring bolts 78 in pds...
Any help is much appreciated

Hi bearlsoh, welcome to the site. I would go to a site like Rocky Mountain ATVMC and head over to the OEM parts section. They have parts fiches for all the bike. I would start by making sure that all the parts you need are present. I would then look at the clutch rod to make sure it's not worn out, and that the clutch arm is still solidly welded and not spinning. If you push on the clutch arm, is it hard to push, or can you move it easily? Is the clutch cable in good shape and does it move the clutch arm when you grab the clutch lever? Were you riding when it broke, or was the bike sitting for a long time?

I couldn't find parts I needed on Rocky mountain (first time ever I love Rocky Mountain) I found this place had everything I need, my bikes not that old though
