Hi, I am a mechanical engineer and i have an obsession with motocross. (raced on and off for 20 years)
While recovering from breaking my foot last year i rebuilt a basket case 1997 kx250 that pretty much needed everything replaced. It took 4 months and im currently re doing the gearbox as i am not happy with how it shifts but overall i am happy with how the motor / suspension performed from my rebuild. (took it for its first ride last weekend) seems like the power is all in the mid range of this motor?
Applied racing tripple clamps.
custom works connection radiator braces
Race Tech Springs,
Dep factory pipe
Pro circuit stainless 304
UFO Frame guards
Wiseco Top end
Wiseco Crankshaft
relaced wheels with Excell rims and stainless steel spokes
Engine cases and powervalve assembly vapour blasted.

Yep still find it hard to beleave this is how she started off........
broken rebound rod in left fork, rims toast, spokes toast, every single bearing gone, exausht held on with number 8 wire, broken subframe, swing arm chewed up by chain, intake side of piston broken off skirt, lower rod bearing GONE (hot rods). pretty much the only thing half decent on it was the tripple clamps with some old black powder coating on it and a okay looking cylinder.
oh and the seat but the brackets where broken so i had to make new ones

Well the transmission swap seemed to go well....... Might look at re cutting some drive dogs, hardening the gears and finding a useable shift fork. Then pretty much I could have 2 motors ready to go
loving this bike and I cant wait to rail some berms on it. Now comes the next question. I have a spare cylinder? do I get it plated (which costs about $800) or buy an LA sleeve and do the work myself for about $200.........
Talking to a tuner here who built NZ championship bikes of this era it doesn't take much to get 50hp out of them.
