Good morning, all. How difficult of a job is it to replace the shift selector shaft. I know that it is accessed by removing the clutch cover, and that the clutch basket would be removed. From what I understand, the cases would not have to be split. Is this correct, and is it a difficult job?

Hi macs69, welcome to the site. You are correct, you do not need to split your cases to remove the shifter shaft. You will need to remove all the items you listed and the shifter, and it will come out with no issues.

+1
Then replace with a 94-04 kx500 shift shaft.
You will be able to use a KX450f shift lever.
I like the Hammerhead levers.
You can get the 5 10 15 or 20mm longer then stock.

Excellent, and great info, guys!
Thank you very much, and I appreciate the welcome!

Will the 94 to 04 shift fit a 1990 kx500?
-
Fits 89-04 KX500.

Isn't the shift shaft smaller on the earlier models? I purchased an 04 and it was to big for the shaft and had to get a 90 from CMSNL.com

Only the splines on the shaft are smaller...
All the rest is the same...

Thanks that's really good to know!
