Just picked up my 14 yr. old a 2001 KX 125. Going through and bringing in back to original condition. Re -threading many bolt holes back to 6mm and having to heli- coil several. Like to keep things simple for me! Just wondering about designation, how do you tell if it is a L1,L2,L3 or L4?

welcome to the site Ibeflowers....
here's a breakdown of VIN#'s and how to determine what year you have...
look at the numbers on the neck of the frame....the 10th digit reveals the year...

it says for KX500, but the VIN#'s work the same with the 125's and 250's as well.
and here's a "how-to" for posting pics....let's get a look at the ole scooter!

No problem with dating the bike. The service manual calls for 4 different sub models for rebuilding the front forks with 4 different levels of fluid. Should I just rebuild to the L1 standards?

'01 is an L3.
