Title: OEM Pipe Question: 89-96 VS 97-04
Post by: manco on March 11, 2016, 02:04:24 AM
From what I understand the kx500 pipe fitting is all the same from 1988-2004. FMF for example are sells a pipe that fits all those years. Kawasaki on the other hand has two part numbers for these years. The 1988-1996 is a 18002-1862 and the 1997-2004 is a 18120-1094.

What I am wondering is whether there is a dimensional difference that changes the tune between the two Kaw part numbers or are the two numbers just paint, finish or paperwork change?

it was different coating/finish....if you look at the different years here, you'll see the difference...they changed to a ceramic coating that was charcoal grey in color and more durable, where the others were just a weak black paint.

Thanks for the info. I had noticed the sheen on the newer pipes. I would imagine that newer finish is easier to keep clean. Awesome link too that you posted. So many sweet KXs through the years.

yeah the new coating was/is way easier to keep clean, and much shinier than the old flat black paint finish....just more rugged overall.
