i recently was given a kx80 by a friend of a friend. it needs some tlc but that's what i enjoy doing. i looked the vin up and it tells me it is a 97 model year. but when i am looking at parts, one thing stands out to me. on the brake hubs, all of the part sites show it having disc brakes. The bike has drum brakes on it. it also has an Ohlins shock on it. any suggestions? any help would be appreciated.

post up some pics if you get a chance.
-
btw. the vin is JKAKXXB1XVA042660. am i looking at something wrong?
-
Not sure how to post pics.

here's a "how-to" on posting pics...

Don't hold me on it...but I'm pretty sure that '87 was the last year for rear drum brakes on the 80...does it have front drum too?
-
it has drum brakes on the front and rear. if it's that old even better. i like the old bikes.
-
I believe '83 was the last year for front & rear drum...in '84 it went to a solid front disc...
-
here's an '83...

makes sense. 83 has the remote shock reservoir as well. sweet, i have a vintage bike on my hands. hopefully i wont have to put too much money into it. but why would the vin say it's a 97? you wouldn't think that all of the parts would transfer from 83 to 97????
it looks like the top one the most.
-
so it's liquid cooled?...and has F & R drum...yep...an '83.
as far as VIN#...I'm at a loss too...maybe someone else on here can answer that one.
-
it is liquid cooled. i'm a little excited and a little worried. finding parts is the part i'm worried about.
-
I haven't checked out a Kawie fiche yet, there "might" be a couple things you can get OEM...
there's a little over 6000 listings in this search...should be able to find something useful...and ask Sandblaster too

I also have recently required a kx 80. I believe mine is an 86. (https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/M3gch-vFdDTOHTzgYO4m2bIIZwh0fYdYtjPun8SD9nMHRc5i7QSTF_ASR37W2XXtXdvf=w105-h140-p)

That VIN is actually a KX 60 not 80 of 97
-
you have a kx 60 1997 they are drum brake front and rear

ahhh...well that would help explain the problem.
1FAST450R, look at the engine cases for numbers, to verify this.
-
if it is a 60, it'll also have a 14" front wheel, and a 12"rear wheel....so look at them too.

Sorry I didnt respond. I also have a baby due next month so ive been super busy. My Bike. The bike pictured above is a KX 80. Says it right on the casing. Someone was so kinda at some point in its life to chisel off part of the vin. "I bought it at a police auction." Only the last few numbers. The front wheel has disc brakes. The rear is drum. I almost have it all back together at this point. It was dropped hard on the right side. Broke off the right side foot control and bent the s**t out of the mounts. my plan is to heat and bend it all back in place. I already have a foot peg, brake pedal, brake Line. Ill have to replace the part on the drum that connects the brake cable to the drum. And replace the cable adjustment piece. Id guess its fairly universal. At least interchangeable among older kx's. Any suggestions are welcome. But I assure you its a very beat up kx 80. I am sure most of you know this but you can buy a universal kx nut and bolt kit. its incredible as far as rebuilding. Saved me hours.

the vin you gave us comes up as a kx 60 1997 Vehicle History Available For Your Kawasaki Kx60 1997, JKAKXXB1XVA0
Home page / Kawasaki 1997 / JKAKXXB1XVA0
VIN: JKAKXXB1XVA0***** Style: Motorcycle. Competition Vehicle: Kawasaki Kx60 1997
Something fishy going on their 1988 was the first year the 80 went to disc brake on rear so it must be prior to 88
