Title: Tripple Center Bolt Tightness
Post by: gowen on July 12, 2005, 01:09:31 PM
I seem to have lost my service manual. So, sorry if this is a dumb question, but how tight should I make the center **lower** tripple clamp nut, the one that is under the upper tripple clamp. The funny looking one with the grooves (located right over the bearing)

gowen, You just want to tighten it up untill you can feel no play in the bearings. If you tighen it up to much it loads the bearings and makes the steering stiff feeling when rotating left to right.

As a general rule; Tighten it up until you notice resistance in the bearings when (freely - as in the bike is on a stand) moving the handle bars left and right (no excessive force). Then loosen it up a 1/4 rev.

Be aware: When you tighten the lock nut it tend to also tighten the whole package so check again after you have tighten the lock nut. A bit of trial and error...
