Are the 87's the ones to stay away from? If so why ? All I've seen is there are no piston kits and kips valves are to hard to find if bad. I've been searching on here and haven't found a lot of 87 info

87 is a stand alone year /similiar motor 86/88 but still differance /heads, clutchs, cranks, gearbox parts are all differant
later pistons conrod kits bearings etc will all fit
Kipp valves 86/88 hard part to get but do come up ever now and then on ebay etc
87 clutch and gearbox part are also getting harder to get
Personally i am not a fan of the 87 looks/ 88 was the first year with the later look /panels frame etc

I loved my 87..... But now own a later one due to parts availability. And my 87 was BEAT. By the time I was done.

the answer to all your questions, youll find here :

, compare the shematics of the single years... for example: except the second gear(changed in 89) are the whole transgears and shiftforks exactly the same from 83 - 2004 . cluchhubs were only diferent because of the change to the inputshafts in 85, 86, 88... 88-2004 has the transmission, clutch... 88 has similar cylinder to 86/87 ...

well the biggest thing I need as of now is a piston this one was melted and are these jugs nickle sealed? Or they a plan steel sleeve I haven't pulled the head off yet

nicasil plated since the late 70īs ... if you find a steel sleeve, is it just a repair to come easily back to standard size...
