what are the specs for the ring gap? my gause is in .001" (not metric)

There isn't one. You put them in and go, just make sure they are aligned with the little pins in the ring grooves or it's going to be a bad day ;)

so how do you know when to replace them? there has to be some spec. how would you know if the factory screwed one up? you would eat your cylinder. i would never build and engine and not check the end gap :shock:

These aren't automotive engines, I asked the same question the first time I did a topend. I asked that question AGAIN when I went to MMI for the K-Tech program. There isn't an end gap setting. Your BEST indicator for replacement of rings in the topend is to use a compression testor and verify that the compression is within service limits (165psi - 110psi). I doubt the soft material the rings are made from will eat a Nikasil cylinder. At least I have never seen it happen.

Asa mechanical engineer, I can assure you that the gap is not .001". I might buy .010" as a best case. The ring is most certainly softer than the cylinder by design. Of course, if the engine is allowed to run to lean too long, you will anneal the ring material and process of meltdown occurs. :)

You guys use rings in your motors?? :shock: How does it work? How's the power?
My pistons fit sooo tight that I don't need rings. When I get a little piston slop, I just use a little JB Weld on the piston, and sand to the proper fit......

Here is what you are looking for. This applies to the KX500 motor built after 1988:
Piston ring end gap 0.2mm to 0.4mm (service limit is 0.7mm)
Piston groove width 1.24mm to 1.26mm (service limit is 1.34mm)
Piston ring thickness 1.17mm to 1.19mm (service limit is 1.10mm)
Piston ring-to-groove clearance 0.05mm to 0.09mm (service limit is 0.19mm)
