Title: KX 125 smoking excessively
Post by: ATKpilot99 on July 28, 2015, 12:07:57 PM
I just did the top end on a 1980 KX 125 I recently purchased. It ran when I bought it and it smoked but at the time I figured it was just because it hadn't been run for awhile and I didn't run it very long. I probably should have. To make a long story longer the bike runs good but the smoking does not really go away or lessen. Could this be a bad crank seal and if so can it be replaced without splitting the cases ? Google searches don't show a whole lot on this subject for this model.

if it is a bad clutch side crank seal...you will have to open up the bottom end.

Thats what I was afraid of. I've never done it although with the correct tools I probably could. How difficult is it and what would the cost be for tools ?

all you need are some patience...and you can get cheap case splitters/flywheel pullers on e-bay...or you can spend a few bucks and get a good one...

Thanks so much for the help. I think that would for sure be cheaper than the labor if I brought the bottom end to a shop.

you migth want to check your jetting and fuel/oil mix, before you split the case,

a leak down test would be best.
