Title: 98 kx250 rear suspension.
Post by: GRARA on July 16, 2015, 07:16:06 PM
Quick question on my 98 rear suspension....the rear end is bouncing up and down when i lightly press down on the seat...does this sound like the mono shock is goosed? is there any way to check this ? or does it simply need re-gassed?

Did you try adjusting the rebound first , if it doesn't make any difference the shock will need a rebuild , you should rebuild it anyway , and keep a hour meter on your bike for maintenance purposes.

Sounds like it is blown.  Time for a rebuild.

Rebuilding a shock is not too complicated, but you will need to have the bladder recharged at your local bike shop.  I've done it a couple of times and it's pretty straight forward.

Here is a good video from Rocky Mountain ATVMC that shows the steps.

I use a piece of pvc pipe to push down on the bladder retainer on the reservoir(the part with the schraeder valve) to remove the clip holding the bladder in the reservoir. I cut a slot in another pvc pipe piece to use to push the seal head into the shock before i reinstall the large retaining circlip in the actual shock shaft body. Total cost of "special shock repair tools": .$1.09. :)  The only tricky part is machining away the staked-over threads that hold the piston and valve stax on the shaft. I used a dremel and carefully ground the top two or three threads at about a 45 degree angle so that the retaining bolt would come off. I used a new nut and red loctite to reassemble. I use 'hydraulic, non-foaming' oil in my shock and forks. Its extremely light viscosity and is cheap. It also works just fine regardless of what "experts" will say. Suspension is simply hydraulic cylinders
Ill take pics of my "tools" tomorrow for you. By the way: i use air instead of nitrogen, but i only use about 110-115psi in my shocks. If your compressor has a moisture filter then air works fine. Itll still work without a filter but i prefer to use one. My rear shock feels absolutely awesome-but I trailride only. If youre going to jump everything in sight, use nitrogen at the proper psi.

Ebay should have them. Comes with new seal head. You have to buy new shock bands (seals around the piston) seperately for about $20. Check that you bladder isnt torn ($20), and id replace the bumper ($15).

All good suggestions.
And I really like the low drag oils available...
