Hi,
I´d like to buy a four cylinder touring bike, that is built tall like an enduro (so riding while standing would be possible).
The only bikes that i know are the new BMW S1000XR, which is about 5 times my budget :roll: and the Versys 1000.
Do you know any bike that fits this (very special :-D) description?
Guess the CBFs or Bandits are all built rather low.
Will test a Tiger 1050, but a japanese 4cyl would just be a no-worry-solution...

Triumph triples, KTM twins, isn't there a honda tourer based on the VFR V4. I know a few triumph owners and they love touring on them.

To be honest, i´ve never tried a three cylinder.
Maybe they ARE the missing link?
Are they more "electric" like 4 cylinders or are they thumpers?

I have ridden both versions of the 675 and a rocket 3. I think they are nearly the best of both worlds between a twin and a four. Also if you have ever heard a MV Augusta 675 on full song with a race system! One of the best sounding four strokes out there.

The Triumph triples are quite literally the smoothest thing I have ever ridden. They make riding a bmw 1200 with air suspension on a sheet of glass feel bumpy. They like there r's however, the 800's don't start pulling into lots of HP till high in the rpm's. The explorer though does have quite a bit more bottom and pulls more like a tractor at low r's but will run with a sport bike once it's in the r's

Alright, this makes the english ones interesting, althought the standard 1050 is the only affordable...

Never personally ridden a 1050 but I know you can get a good price on them. I don't know how much this relates to bikes vs cars seeings how i don't own any European street bikes or cars but I know one thing they used to say "If you can't afford a new BMW with a warranty, you can't afford a BMW"
I would honestly look at the kawasaki versys, not cause i'm a kawi only guy but there right about what your looking for. Upright ergonomics, ability to stand, inline 4.
The honda ST might work for you as well, not sure how standing would be on it however.

May help if we knew your budget. You can pick up a really nice low mile Super tenere for 8-9000, Also maybe look at the FJ's (not ideal but an option)

I was going to ask if you had ridden a triple. They have a natural harmonic and can be smoother than a four. You should try one to see if that will work for you.
Eagle Riders rents motorcycles Nation wide and they have quite a selection. There are at least 7 I want to try that are $100-$200 for 24 hours. Lot's cheaper for me to get my 'change the bike' fix that way!

Don't mean to hijack this thread but the talk of the Triumphs reminded me of a conversation I had last week with the last Triumph dealer we had in our town.
During the economic downturn all Triumph dealers were selling less bikes.
Our local dealer was selling approximately double the national average per capita.
That is not surprising as he is a above board guy.
Anyway, Triumph came to him and said either floor more models or we will take your dealership away.
So he tried to contact the CEO who wouldn't even take his call.
The only thing he was told by Triumph is to buy more bikes or loose the dealership.
So, he lost the dealership.
You can't afford to floor more then you sell in a specified time.
If you own a Triumph and live on the West Coast you have a huge dead spot for service as there are no dealers from Portland OR to the Bay Area CA.
That's because Triumph also closed dealerships in Medford OR and Sacramento CA.
Triumph's last CEO was a ding dong.
Clearly his successor isn't fairing much better from what I can see.
It's pretty simple, if you want your dealers to sell more bikes, give them the tools to sell more.
Advertising incentives, better options for flooring more models, and a bike more people want to ride are just a few tools they could offer.

a little off topic, but that statement holds true for the 2T sled engines also.
I've always owned big twins...my dad on the other hand always had big triples...Polaris Indy 600's back in the 80's and 90's, and Ski-Doo Mach-Z's, and he had a '95 Yamaha V-Max4 800 that was just ridiculous with power....and his triples always ran smoother than my twins, and the V-Max4.

Thanks for your input so far!
I haven't had the chance to ride a tiger yet, but a bmw r1150r.
Of course wouldn't call it an enduro, maybe just a high built naked bike, but definitely something that matches my idea, except of the engine.
Standing while riding is no problem with it, so maybe i should have asked for bikes built as high as the bmw r's, and not for 4cylinder enduros.
As said, i haven't tried bandits, cbf's or bikes like that, but are they really that lower than a r1150r?
Or do you know one that isn't?
