heres the 2 hundred million dollar question.... on a kx500 being ridden on hard terrain, does a tire exist that will last more than 5 hrs of riding on it. if not then i would like some opinions from anybody who has found a rear tire that is at least worth giving some praise . i used to run a kings tire that i can no longer find. basically due to the cheaper price tag,and lasted as long as any. ive just about wasted a shinko 505 i bought less thsnav 3 months. and 50 % if that 3 months i had the bike torn down rebuilding it. anybody????

Maxxis Max Cross IT...they last quite a while....I found they suck in the sand, but they really aren't made for sand either...

Desert It. Has to say desert on it. Wears like rebar

that may be so, but the regular one I had on for 4 months didn't have a scratch on it...even after several high speed runs and heavy wheel spin on packed crushed stone roads our power lines are made of.
the only reason I took it off was it's poor performance in soft terrain...other than that, I would've kept running it.
either one, ya can't miss.
-
cool. all i have out my backdoor is hard terrain, rocky hill climbs rocky creek beds, rocky rocky rocky rocky. but theres a benefit to rocky....no 4 wheeler bug dust ruined trails. maxxis huh. desert? rebar...im on it..thanx. i wish i knew something somebody didn't already know around here and feel like a contributing member for a change. and not just a leach for an answer.

+1
I am running the Desert IT currently and couldn't be happier!! Have at least 10 hrs on it and just starting to round off a bit, no chunking what so ever!!! Ride on hard packed D.G., Rocky stuff out side San Diego with the occasional mx track trip thrown in. Does spin a bit in the sand but $h1t so does my paddle on it

so far nobody has led me wrong here and i dont expect that to happen. so my next rear tire looks to be a maxxis with desert it stamped in the tread. 3 out of 3 cant be wrong. i was trying to figure out what i was going to have to come up with to mount a michelin otr tire on the back of that thing.
-
I've always wanted to try a pirelli trials tire.....
-
ok so my rear tire showed up today and it is the maxxis maxx cross intermediate terrain tire .but nowhere on it does it say desert it......wrong tire? Rocky mtn ATV*MC. should i return for exchange or is this the one im looking for?
-
that's the same one I used for 4 months, and it hardly had a scratch on it when I swapped it out....I'd run it.
-
will do. lets see how she takes the abuse.
-
Tried that one once. Good traction... But doesn't live here in desert baja 1000 type conditions.. That's why they make the desert it...
-
i hear ya thats why asked. your right about the terrain. its brutal hard around here. and i know if i dont put on the "wears like rebar" im going to wish i had. thanks for the reply. in contemplation. :-P

following up the maxxis desert it tire that i put on just over a month ago. the tire is better than any other tire thats for sure. and its not a uni-directional tire so now half of it is gone. so is it a good idea to flip it over in the rim and run it the other way? this is getting expensive. i need a tire made of steel.

I flip mine....

I run the good old Pirelli MT16s on my 500. They hold up well. Not the greatest in sand but gets the job done. For sand I run the Pirelli Mid Soft 32s.

I flip mine too...
but also use one of these...

I doubt everyone will agree with me, but the tire knife has been one of the best $60 items I've ever bought...you can get a fresh edge when you want...and...when you cut a new edge, you also narrow the knob, which allows it to "flex" more...which in return, allows the knob to get a better bite/grip.

I want to try one of these in the desert

I may try the golden Tyres next time... atleast on the front

ya i have a couplr rears laying around that o can run off the other way. i guess when theres not a whole lot else to do it doesnt really matter what direction a half gone tire grabs. as long as it grabs. and foxx thats really not a bad idea, if you can handle the rubber smell and dont cut too deep. i think with the terrain i ride on nothing less than turning the tires around will really prolong the inevitable. now that tractionator hard terrain LOOKS LIKE A POSSIBILITY BIT IT DOESNT COME IN A 120 /90-19 ONLY A 110/90-19, dont know that it matters as long as does to the dirt what a skill saw does to lumber. and ive heard other people talk about pirelli and that is a name with a history. ,. so far o dont think theres a compound of rubber carbon and steel that will hold up all that well on a 500 in the rock. i remember when i worked for purcell tires and i would repair the otr tires from the mine eqiupment that got damaged and needed rebuilt. id cup out the damaged rubber grind of the radial cords and cook in a patch and plug with a great tire vulcanizing system built by monoflex. sure would be nice to have a tire cap mold and chamber for a nicely knobbied 120/90-19 and then id just extrude in the rubber stiffness on the recap of whatever case i wore off last. too bad theres probably no way in hell to recap a dirtbike tire casing. i imagine it stays fairly cool as it is in the dirt. but what glue would stand up to the beating the thing would take.. hmmm ill think on that for a while.. thanks guys
-

I do it outdoors...don't even smell rubber burning at all.
-
i sure would like to get my hands on a tire mold capsule case for recooking extruded rubber onto the case of a motocross tire. i bet one of those dont show up used on ebay to very often. i wonder where the hell a person could come across one of those. i imagine the tire manufacturers hold onto the the cooks pretty tight. and if one goes to s**t i wouldnt think theyd just auction it off to the general public. i wish i knew

well i got myself another maxxis dessert it and been running it for about a week. i think if i could find that trials tire in a 120/90-19 id be going for that one next . and as soon as i do find one ion that size i will. but for now a tire every month and a half is what im looking at during the spring summer and fall. seems like theres gotta be something g else i can do. although the bike is running super. thanks foxx and blaster. i have nothing to complain about .as far as power when i want it. my newest thing is going down the hill i just climbed and going slow enough using the front and back brakes then without putting my feet down turning around about half to three quarters of the way down and gunning it right back to the top. i love hills . i wish they werent so rocky near the tops of all the hills around here . but after a few runs up and down a new climb the rocks are thrown around and end up more near the bottom. i try to stay away from the bottom of hill like i said i get about a quarter away from the bottom and im usually headed back up it. hope you all had a good halloween. and all bikes are running as well or as well as mine. talk later guys

110/80/19 closest I can find
-
ya know i might just put the smaller trial;s tire on next spring just to give it a go round. i mean hell ill try it why not.?
-
but for now a tire every month and a half is what im looking at
that's better than what I'm doing....and I ride in sand and black loam!.
when I was racing, I'd get two 20min races per tire....I'd just flip it between motos.
had I gotten a tire knife back when I was racing, I could've gotten maybe 4 races per tire.
so you're about average for someone that isn't racing.
-

it just seems to me that with the best tire at $110 to$120 a pop a person should be able to get more than 5 or six hrs on a tire. plus when i run a tire off i rin it to nothing on top. the knobbs on the sides are there but chunked out pretty well. i know the 500 are powerhouses and are tough on anything included on the bike if a person knows how to have some fun on one. but really> im ha;f tempted to go for those really cheap tires that half as long and see whats most cost effective. i think thastll be my thing .ill start documenting the hrs to tire and ultimately come up with a base line durability per buck. itll help me know which way to go. i still want to cget a recap cell built from some tyre company and start retreading. i think as long as the case of the tire is good then the rest shouldn't be a problem. but just to retread for myself ....theres that cost effective term again.

regardless of how much you spend, or what brand you're running that's just the nature of it...and where you're running in mostly rock/hard pack, it's gonna be that much tougher to make a tire last.
try buying snowmobile track ...I had the dealer install a new one on my sled in 2013...it was just over $1200.

try buying snowmobile track cheesy...I had the dealer install a new one on my sled in 2013...it was just over $1200
ya i know its the nature of the beast but the more i can get out of my buck the better ill feel about it at least. and ill pass on the snow track. we got the ruby mtns here but im just not into getting ,me a sled a trailer then another hobby. maybe convert to snow bike ... i dint think so but thats always an option. anyways peace.
-
it's starting sound like you'd be better off selling the bike...and getting a good pair of hiking boots.

youre not very funny sometimes :-o

hehehe ....chin up...
let me offer my sympathy for you...

im not sure how to say this...a hard tire isn't always for hard dirt. soft tires are better on hard pack and intermediates are sometimes better in soft sandier conditions
one of the tire mans had that write-up I don't remember which one but it kind of got me thinking the other way around it got better for my tire bill

there is some truth to that...
knob spacing and design is crucial to tire selection as well....widely spaced knobs for sand/soft, and the narrower the spacing, the better for harder terrain, as you increase the footprint.
-
ya i agree with the less space between the knobs being a better hard terrain like i ride kinda tire. i remember back in the day when my dad would ride he would have a tire that was almost all knobby. i dont really know what om looking for. the trials tire sounded like a good idea but the size isnt whats recommended though . so ill burn off another maxxis dessert it but i need to do some comparison shopping in the meantime. i just want to ride. not look at my back tire and say to myself f**k me an0ther one already.? but this one looks like iotll last a bit longer. im not much into riding on snow and ice. so i have time to look. thanks guys. giggidy giggidy

haha...that's called..."self inflicted disgust!!" :-D...just stop looking at the tire!
-
very true ..but i dont have to look at it to know when she stops hooking up as well shes going bald. but anyway. enough about tires for a while, huh?
-
you started it...but whatever...chin up, you'll live.
