Title: It begins! 99 kx500 Supermoto
Post by: Schutzy on April 30, 2015, 09:12:21 AM
I got my 17 inch supermoto rims from Warp9 today!

Soon I'll be starting to put this together! Still waiting to get the hand guards, front fender, tower nut / valve stem; need to purchase rim strips, supermoto tubes and decide on what tires Ill be racing on!

Project bike: 1999 Kawasaki KX500

I plan on initially going with 17/44 gearing since its almost identical to the stock chain length, then going to 17/40

You'll have a tough time getting anything past a 15 counter sprocket to fit.
And, unless your really doing some heavy engine mods you'll never pull that gearing anyway.
You can do some checking of your gearing and projected speeds here:

http://www.gearingcommander.com/ (http://www.gearingcommander.com/)

Don't forget to enter your correct tire size with your new 17's.
I have used gearing commander extensively and it has always been very accurate for me.
If your motor is relatively stock check gearing for 8500 rpm, 5th gear, at 105 mph.
Something like 15/44.
That should put you at about 90mph in 4th pinned.
If your changing your port timing then the sky's the limit  8-)

When I put my SM wheels back on I'll be running 14/44 for a top speed of about 100 mph.
When I finish my new cylinder I'll be upping that just a bit  :-o

Move your rear wheel back as far as you can...
Lower the forks in the triples..
Be sure your sag is set and use a spring for your weight.
At 15/44 you will need to slip the clutch in first just a hair doing fast launches.
2nd is a blip... concentrate on keeping the front wheel down.
3rd roll it on a lot harder.
4th let it rip..
5th, death or glory

Supermoto fender installed

Awaiting tires and tubes!

Btw, aside from noticing my chain "polishing" my subframe I noticed my 99 kx500 may have an older shock..

What year is the purple spring?

that looks sweet!...
my '95 came stock with a purple spring...but that doesn't mean jack...
me and my riding buddy both bought '93 KX250's brand new in the crate shipped to our homes, from the same dealership and the same weekend....his came with a yellow spring, mine came with a blue....and neither one of us asked for any specific suspension setups....just how they came in the crate.

if you use the "search" option....there's tons of options to prevent your chain from sawing the sub-frame...I used a joist hanger....scroll down about half way...

Looks like time for a rebuild before I have a complete piston seizure!

When I first bought my bike it had a high hanging idle speed. It mostly went away after I cleaned the carb and adjusted the throttle cables. Now I have only put on a couple of hours on my bike in dirt trim and think riding any longer would be stupid without a rebuild. It started surging on deceleration and leaking more oil out the transmission seal.

Here's what the top of the piston through the exhaust port looks like and if you look close enough you can see a line on the intake side of the cylinder.

I took off the ignition cover and didn't see any signs of oil leakage or smells of gas etc, just a massive flywheel weight from A-Loop!
