Title: Just found a crack in my rear rim, 87 KX250
Post by: dinkyguitar on March 26, 2015, 12:15:38 PM
Sucks.....it's like a money pit.

I was trying to change the tire when I noticed I had a crack at the lip opposite of the bead locker.

I'm pretty sure I didn't do it, since I wasn't putting that much pressure on the crowbar...

What are my options.

Ebay doesn't have any that I'm interested in....

I could lace a new rim, but I can't find anything that fits.

It's 18" x 2.15 with 36 spokes.

Here's the ass crack...

What other years will fit? Or where can I buy a new rim and spokes?

The only part I could read before laughing was
"Just found a crack in my rear"

If it makes you feel better I just found this in my sub frame.. But it shouldn't since I can fix mine in about 15 min

On topic.   How hard do you ride it?  My dunes bike had a crack and 2 busted spokes for years........

Also found a crack in my front rim from the neglected 99 KX250 I bought and now rebuilding. Kind of makes me not so worried about taking it easy now. Make proper use of them till I can replace them someday.

That one wasn't intentional....but now that you pointed it out, it's pretty funny.  :-D

I had to put some humor into it since I was pissed...this thing is becoming a money pit  :-(

I had 2-3 more things to buy to finish and now I found this  :x

Checking my pictures I can see it was there the whole time which makes me glad that I didn't do it.

I was thinking about finding someone that can weld it here in New Jersey.

Or just buy ring and lace it....anyone lace a rim?

Also, I can find rims from Warp9, but I'm not sure of the spokes. In 87, most of the bikes had the same size rim, but are the spokes different lengths?

On topic.   How hard do you ride it?  My dunes bike had a crack and 2 busted spokes for years........

Haven't rode her yet....I started restoring her a year ago.

dinky,

Hey Dinky. I thought I'd pass this on. Saw this a while ago and if I had to do it myself, I'd use these as a guide.

Just skip a bit with this one to the lacing part.

I would not worry about it unless you ride at a expert + level and have lots of rocks around.

Thanks...they said the rim was available but no spokes.

They referred me to, http://www.buchananspokes.com/

Custom spokes for $100 or so.

I thinking about buying the rim and reusing my spokes....if I can get them off.

I would not worry about it unless you ride at a expert + level and have lots of rocks around.

That thought did cross my mind since I'll just be trail riding....still not sure though.

dinky,

This is one of those situations that you really don't want to take risks. Yes, there is a very good chance that you'd never have a problem...but, this is your well-being and possibly your life you're putting at risk by knowingly running a bad wheel. It doesn't matter how well of a rider you are or aren't, all it would take is the correct amount of impact on that crack...whether it be from a hidden rock, log, foreign debris from someone dumping things that they shouldn't be...and if you're at speed, it could be REALLY costly.
Do yourself a favor and get a new wheel, or have that one welded at minimum....the last thing we want to hear is that you had a catastrophic crash and can never walk or ride again.

save headache and do not reuse your spokes.  You will hate yourself for trying.  I can get u a better deal on the rim if that helps u get some spokes.  I'm a Warp 9 dealer

The wheels I have laced I have never been able to save all of the old spokes. Even then they have wear plus the rust on the threads. Much better to buy new and be done with it. Pain in the rear cleaning up old spokes. Makes the build up go faster with new ones too. The last set of wheels and spokes I purchased (ProCycle) I let them do the lacing. Easier yet! I am getting lazy in my old(er) age!

Probably a good idea.

I'm going to get it welded by a local machine shop. I cleaned the entire rim and the crack is actually where to two halves of the rim are welded together.

dinky,
