Title: popping out of third gear
Post by: shooky on March 13, 2015, 01:43:23 PM
500af running great with carb fixed, took it for a good burn. It like to pop out of third gear. Any suggestions or links that cover this issue?

broken snap-ring...drain the oil through a paint filter and see if any metal chunks come out.

Is a broken snap ring common?

yes...
could be worn gear dogs too...that's very common on 3rd gear.
either way, you're gonna have to split the bottom end open to fix it....be the perfect time for a complete rebuild :-D

Any thing to look for while it's a part?  Suggested mods while it's open?

Working on the picture thing but looking at everything,  it all looks good other than the snap ring. How often do they break like that?  Thanks for the help.

it can happen at any given time...
it's wise to replace ALL of them any time you have to split the cases...it's cheap insurance.
and the last thing you want to happen, is to have one break shortly after you get it all back together after having it all apart.

the rings break if they have the right age after some riding...  i had the same on a friends 97 kx250 some years ago. it starts with the snapring and at least the shift fork and 2 gears for 4th and 5th were also damaged, ...

like foxx.. said the rings are cheaper than transbox-damage...

Is there a better snap ring to use that will bold up better than stock?

If work has been done on the tranny before the snap ring/s could have been installed wrong. I know on Suzuki the snap ring has a radius side and a sharp edged side. The radius side faces the gear so that the sharp edge or unfinished side butts up against the groove of the shaft to keep it in place. If the radius side faces away from the gear this puts more stress on the snap ring. I'm assuming that Kawasaki may be the same.

10-4! Exactly! Except brand new snap rings for Suzuki will be that way but a slight radius on one side.

Yep, new kx500 clips are the same.

I kind of figured as much. Install them wrong especially on a 500 and your tranny is doomed to pre-mature failure! So many little things that aren't in the book. My engine builder here in Vegas clued me in on that one. His primary bread and butter is suspension especially for desert but the guy knows engines too!

the oem-snaprings are much more durable as any other on the market..  its the power of the engine, that chews them up . they could break after some months or last 10 years in the engine . its also the intensity of riding .. much riding on pro level for example =  much more shorter live for some parts of the bike...

Choice of trans oil and frequency of changes could also have a positive or negative affect.

What a good oil to run in the trans

everyone will have their own opinion on this question...
I ran Bel-Ray Gear Saver and Motul for years in the tranny, which are good...but you're paying for the name more than anything.
I run what the manual calls for these days...plain old 10w-40, change it often, you won't have any problems what-so-ever, and you'll save a ton a money.

I've ran everything from 10/40 to expensive big names ect but now I run ***** and change it often...  :-D

2 words: motul transoil  8-)

for gearboxoil is also very important to have the additive in for the clutch-plates...   some cheap oil could effect that the clutch is sliding
