Title: Is winterizing your bike better than starting every so often?
Post by: dinkyguitar on February 06, 2015, 04:54:11 AM
Hi All,

I've always started my power equipment during the winter just to run it.

Now that I have my 87 KX250 I'm not sure what is better, starting it every 3-4 weeks or just leaving it till the weather gets better.

One of my concerns is that when I do start my bike, I run it for about 10-15 minutes with or so, and ride it slow on my small front yard.

I can always hold my hand on the cylinder since it doesn't get that hot, especially in this 20 deg. weather.

I'll blurp the throttle every so often too.

I'm not sure if this is good or not for the bike, but I think it gets parts circulating, and internal bearings and such get pre-mix on them preventing rust and things.

Winterizing? just make sure it has antifreeze and leave it alone.
You're needing to clean the carb anyways!

Starting anything with a babbit/aluminum, any shell or housing bearing cold because you want to isn't on the good side of anything. Theres a few trips around the shaft without lube no matter what you're dealing with, But you're keeping guys like me fed  :-D

Funny! Best way!
I use NON-ethanol 92 fuel in everything except the cars. Put them in the garage and trickle charge them. Start 'maybe' every couple months. Not had an issue with them 2 stroke or 4 stroke. My stuff is all stock in the engine department.

I always add sta-bil to my fuel when I mix it up. I have a small fleet (might be addicted to Craigslist) and I don't always ride as often as I would like. That stuff sure makes a difference in the fuel life.
