Title: Source for Rebuilt Crank, exchange basis?
Post by: IridiumRed on April 03, 2005, 12:06:54 PM
Hey guys

My 97 KX5 needs crank bearings. Going to tear it down soon.  I'd like to replace the rod bearing as well, as good insurance.  I dont have the tools/experience to disassemble and reassemble/true the crank (but can do everything else).

Do you guys know of anyone that has KX500 cranks available on an exchange basis? I'd rather not have the bike out of action for a couple of weeks waiting for a crank to come back from a rebuilder

Thanks!!
Steve

How much are willing to spend :?: midwestactioncycle.com has complete cranks with rod and balanced for $359.95. Call them they may give you a core charge for your old one or Contact eric gorr forward motion. You can link to them from this site under web links(shops).

Good advice(Midwestactioncycle).  You really can't fix them once they are off...get it welded once it's balanced too.

If you have the crank welded, can it be rebuilt later in the future?

No.  From what I've been told, you can't buy individual parts for the crank anyway.

Well, can't you buy aftermarket rods?

Wouldn't welding the center pin to the crank throws make it impossible to disassemble the crank to replace the rod/rod bearing?  Of course, perhaps i'm wrong on whats being welded.... or what you can replace on these cranks......

No one makes rods that I know of.

You can get rod kits. IMS makes rods and so does wiseco. midwestactioncycle.com offers rod rebuild kits. Comes with rod, crank pin bearing, crank pin and thrust washers and wrist pin bearing $84.95. The best thing might be to just replace crank bearings and buy a rod rebuild kit and get the bike back up and running. I don't but is a balanced crank worth the crap to go through and money involed.
