Title: White KX-500 Automatic Blaster
Post by: Kawadougie on April 03, 2005, 05:14:53 AM
I just downloaded five photos of my white wonder to the photp gallery.  Notice the Clarke gas tank.  It eliminates the shrouds and holds 3.5 gallons.  The fenders are good old Acerbis.  The bike has the following mods:
1. Cylinder milled (lowered) and ported for bottom end power. (Eric Gorr)
2. Head was relieved to keep compression stock.
3. Wiseco piston.
4. FMF Gnarly pipe and ISDE silencer/spark arrestor.
5. Moto Tassinari reed block.
6. Moose intake spacer.
7. EMF Automatic clutch
8. Race Tech suspension (both ends)
9. Main jet: 165 - Pilot jet: 43  Needle in second groove
10. Redline synthetic oil at 40:1 with pump premium fuel.

I used to run a Steahly flywheel but I found that the auto clutch works better without it.  This bike rips in the woods.  I spent a lot of time getting the jetting just right.  I ride a lot of trails and spend a lot of time from 1/8 to 1/2 throttle.  I found the stock pilot jet way too rich and it would puke lots of spooge out ot the silencer.  Now the pipe is clean and I just did a top end inspection and didn't even have to clean the power valve.  The motor work done by Eric Gorr was awesome for only $185.00.  The motor hits hard off the bottom and hasn't lost any of the top end power as far as I can tell.   :D

Posting in the Gallery is rather strange.  It still won't allow me to change the name from "Untitled" to something else.  Basicially you select "new nested album" at the top when you log in and then you select "Download photos" and select them from your computer.  Try to make them smaller by reducing the size to 640 x 480 and reducing the colors to 256 because there is a size limit.

kawadougie,
nice, really nice white 500 there, a few months back i was tempted to go to green and white, as the local shop here had several universal ufo fenders and pieces in white.
i'll find the site for you that has a white sheath/ tubing that you can put over your front brake line to accent that area as well, if you'd like. jdv

Nice bike man! That has to be the first all white KX5 that I have ever seen. Looks like a Knievel bike or something. I bet some graphics kits they have out would look awesome on a white background.

Thanks for all the compliments.  I've always liked white bikes for some reason and I've used those Acerbis fenders on several other bikes in the past.  I have bought a standard tank in white from Clarke but I was really happy with this one.  Doordie, when you get your clutch, let me know and I will help you set it up.  It really works better without the flywheel.  You just point and turn the throtttle and it lifts the front end up and jets to the next corner.  You never have to worry about killing the motor, even when you lock up the rear wheel.  I'm heading up to Oregon later this month to ride the China Hat (one day) ISDE.  I'll let you know how it does.

Is the Clarke tank still available? Looks like my ZipTy with KX250 shrouds.

yeah, I went out to Clarke's web site and they have them there.  170 + S/H.  They also have them in about 8 different colors.  I dare you to get the RedOrange one!

The shrouds are part of the tank and hold fuel right? How thin is that tank, same as stock or wider?

Yes, the shrouds are formed into the tank and hold fuel.  Back by the seat, the tank is roughly the same width as stock but it gets wider at the front.  It holds 3.5 gallons.  The whole point is to keep the weight down low.  I previously bought the Clarke 3.9 gallon tank but it was too tall and carried the weight too high.

Any long term problems with this tank?

Not at all.  I originally bought the taller Clarke tank that uses the stock shrouds but it made the bike feel top heavy when the tank was full.  This one feels great all the time and gives me a lot of range.  The only problem with this tank is that no one makes graphics for it.
