Title: Rear fender for 2002 KX500
Post by: 2002KX500 on March 17, 2005, 11:25:27 AM
Hello.

What is the correct "straight-looking" KX250 rear fender that will fit a 2002 KX 500?  I saw Doordie's 92 KX rear fender, but, I was surprised that the right fender was a 92.  Do any of the later KX250 fenders fit a KX500?

Thanks in advance.

Kevin

92 and 93 are the same fender I believe. I just ordered mine from Monkeybuttparts.com. They seem to be one of the few places I could find that had them in stock and they were also the cheapest I found. $25.98 including shipping. Should be delivered tomorrow. Cant wait!  I dont know if you know this or not Kevin, but you do have to do some minor trimming to parts of the 250 fender to get it to fit the 500, so there is none that directly fits without modification.

Yup.  I heard about the trimming, that's why I asked if any of the later model KX250 rear fenders worked.

Do you get Acerbis or UFO?

I am going t order via Dennis Kirk because I also have to order the Pingel fuel valve and that would put it over $100 (no tax, free ship).

Thanks in advance on the brand of fender.

The one I ordered was a UFO, which is the one most recommended around here from what I've read.  It should be delivered today so I'll let you know when I get it how it looks. The 250 rear fender that was on my bike when I purchased it is an acerbis and It doesnt look as good as the rest of these guys bikes on here which is why I am getting the new UFO.

When the new one gets delivered I'll take some pics with it next to the acerbis thats on the bike so you can see the difference.

Did you take before and after pics by any chance, machine? If not I'm going to do mine tonight and I'll take befores and afters of the trimming for future reference since I havent seen any on here yet. First impression is that this is a very nice fender. Good and solid. I took some pictures of it out of the package and put them in my gallery. Page 4, bottom center, #25. I took some side by side pictures with the Acerbis rear fender that came on my bike. After seeing them side by side, I think the Acerbis may be a different year fender. It is pretty rigged on there and as you can tell in some of my pictures, it doesnt fit the seat very well.  I'll take more pics as I'm putting the new one on tonight.

It seems that no one really likes to run the old "droopy" fender, so everyone has to trim and cut up the new fenders to make them fit.  I'm just curious why no plastic company hasn't made a mold with the straight fender for us, that would require no cutting and trimming????

As a note, I have a fender from a 2002 KX250 that I am going to try and make work.  I'll let everyone know if it works, and how difficult it was to install.

I threw a before and after pic of the trimming on my new fender.  Its alot more trimming than the posts on here had me believing, but it wasnt too bad. Small trimming on the part that touches the airbox, and major trimming around the exhaust and silencer area. Plus I had to drill all new holes. Also, the rear seat really  has to be stretched around the fender. So much so in fact, that until I had it all together I couldnt imagine it working.  Took only a couple hours tops, and is VERY worth the effort.  I havent taken before and after pics of the fender installed yet, but I will soon.

I like it both ways. Does that sound bad? I'm gonna do the 92 with a black 250 and black everthing else, and leave the new one [when it gets here] standard.

It only looks weird in pictures. In real life you only get a split second "glance" at it before the sand and rocks hit yer goggles!

This pict. shows both fenders......for me the fenders are for looks....as the bike is raced for SM only....the front fender would be useless off road in the rain and mud etc....any back fender isn't gonna stop rocks and dirt etc from flying out the back....as you guys know the 500 is the king of rock flinging........

I know what you guys mean about the fender looking like its pointing at the sky.  It took me a while (very short while) to get used to it. Then, after reading your guys' posts in this thread I started looking at some other bikes.  It turns out that there is hardly any difference between the way the fender fits on a KX250, and on the KX500.  I think that its just the difference between the looks of the stock 500 fender and the 250 fender. For example...

KX500 with a KX250 rear fender...

And a KX250...

Not much difference at all with the angle of the fender.  I think maybe it could be the profile of the seat and tank too.  If the big 5 had a flatter seat and low-profile tank it would probably flow better.

I see what you mean,I think the side panels and silencer on the 500 are level making the fender look sky ward!

I approached my fender conversion a bit different.  I must be trim challenged because I couldn't get mine to fit inside as nice as I would like.  The stock fits perfect inside and seals nicely against the airbox, the 93 UFO was nice outside... so I made the frankein-fender.  I cut both fenders in half and spliced them together under the seat.  Gives a slightly better overall fender angle as well (not pointing at the sky).  Sounds goofy but actually worked out rather well. Here's some pics. Cam.

I too like the old stock fender. The Kawasaki plastic is only a couple dollars more than the after market stuff. I found the after market plastic weathers and cracks easier than the stock.

Cam,

Got any pix of it on the bike? The splice job looks like a great idea.

Just a side note but as I remember those Pingel petrol taps are not a straight conversion onto KX tanks cos the standard tap is recessed into the tank slightly so the plate that comes with the tap is too big to fit into it.

You can either fill the recessed part of the tank in so its flat or grind the adapter plate to the right shape.

Don't ask me how I know

Another vote for the outdated old looking mudguard here also :)

I find it holds my road numberplate nicely and with it I don't need a dodgy looking numberplate hanger

I prefer the old style fender.  The newer mod fender just does not look right to me.  I'm thinking because the older style side panels make it look out of place.

I would like to use a "pointy" fender for a season or two. I would think that at least one plastic company would make a Hybrid fender , kx500 attachment part and kx250 exposed part. Has any one called and talked to plastic companies? If a company made this, it may not sell extremely well, but  I think there would be a definate market. Also has anyone riveted the 250 part to a 500 part ?

I trimmed my second rear guard up and fitted the thing in under 1/2 an hour. First one was a bit slower. But once you know what to do its a piece of piss.

Johnnie,
I did exaclty that, made the "frankeinfender" by riveting the old 500 to a new 250.  Pics are in my gallery.  I started with the 250 but wasn't happy with my trim job.  Cam.

What rear fender comes with the Zip Ty kit? I have not seen a Zip Ty kit, but it is my understanding that it makes a 500 look like a 250.  I think the "frankeinfender" is what I will end up with, but am hoping for a better solution.
Machine; does the plastic weld joint get brittle, or does it stay flexible?

Well I used it on a buddies old Tri-Z, 3 wheeler, and it worked great!
It was in real bad shape too. BIG cracks, some over a foot long.
The joint stays flexible also.....

Machine, I see by the new map that you live near Glamis. It has always been a life goal to ride in the Glamis dunes either with my race truck, bike or buggy. If I ever am able to get  out that way I will ask for advise and perhaps directions.  Silver lake dunes in Michigan is very clean "live dunes" They are constantly moving. We have a couple thousand acres of dunes but may only ride on about eight hundred acres. If you are ever in Michigan area, let me know and we can tour Silver Lake Dunes.

Thanks JS, but to tell you the truth, I haven't been to the "low" desert (Glamis) for years. I had a bad crash (Someone on aother bike drilled me) and needed to be air lifted out.
So now I just stay around the "high" desert area, much less people!
