Hey guy's
I am thinking about building my own off road skid plate with water pump/ign. cover protection. Does anybody have any pictures of one they built and any tips. I know I can buy one for around 70.00 but I can have some fun making it myself.

I bought a 12" X 24" piece of aluminum tread plate from Lowes (home improvement center) and a few U-bolts. Bent, cut, and bolted on the plate. It even bends up around the pipe to protect it. You have to make a brace to connect from the frame to the front of the skid plate over the pipe if you wrap it around the pipe, because it will vibrate against the pipe.

Toml,
I had that same idea about bring it out in front of the pipe. Could you post some pictures just so i could get an idea of what this thing will look like. Thanks.

jdv500, That looks nice. The company I work for has a engineering test center in bridge port,AL Next time I'm up there am going to use their machine shop and metal to build my skidplate. I really would like to see Toml's. plate that comes out in front of the pipe to protect it.

Just a quick tip, make a template out of cardboard and some duct tape, you can really expeirment and see what it will look like. seth

I hope to make one. It's just an idea in my mind for future mods. Thanks cardboard should work for template.

I made my own, doesnt protect the water pump. Was going to add KDX style crash bars and never did,but have never had any damage there yet!

I had my engine out and thought it would be a great pic to show one way to mount a skid plate. The clamps are 3/4" aluminum electrical p-clamps, about $0.10 each, light and strong. Through bolts are 1/4" 316SS carriage type, round and smooth on the outside. I used a scrap teflon block to bridge the gap at the rear frame tubes so the plate could be flat underneath (where the frame tubes are not) but supported strongly. Cam.
