Title: Rear brake screwed
Post by: bens87braap on August 30, 2014, 07:45:30 PM
This is the rear hub from my 85 125.  The previous owner has ran the bike without any brake shoes so the cam was grinding into the hub how do i go fixing this or is it rubbish.

Thanx  Ben

it might be easiest to try and find another hub, unless you can find a good machine shop that could repair it.
it would be cool if you could find an 86 swing arm and convert to a rear disc...but, 86 was the transition year where Kawie completely changed the rear suspension...so it wouldn't be very cost effective, and a lot of work.
there are some "wheel" guys on here...maybe one of em will chime in, maybe there's some other years that will work, or an aftermarket place that makes replacement hubs for the 85.

well after doing a little research, I found out that the 86, 87, 88 KDX200's shared the same rear hub as your 85 KX....only difference is the KDX hubs are silver, not black like the KX.
the other problem, is none of them are available from Kawie anymore...and there is nothing on e-bay at the moment.
I'd check e-bay everyday, something's bound to turn up.

Even though the 85 KX250 and KX500 rear hubs have a different part number then the 85 kx125 I think they are relatively the same.
I know for sure that the 250 and 500 hubs have 20mm rear axles and are about 130mm from the outside to the outside of the bearings, just like your 125  8-)

unfortunately there's none of them listed on e-bay/craiglist at the moment either...

the 41034-1157 replaces all the old/other part numbers for the 85 KX125, and for the 86,87,88 KDX200...at least that's how Kawie has it listed now.

Weird.
The 86-88 kdx200 rear hubs are narrower then the 85 kx125..

Cheaper to buy another bike

This was the other bike at one stage I was going to use it as a parts bike but we spent too much now to go back

Weird.

yeah it is weird...especially if they're narrower....but did you see what I was talking about?, I use the OEM parts finder off Rocky Mountain...unless Kawie has made a mistake.

Ok, I did some more research at Kawasaki's website and Partzilla.
www.Kawasaki.com (http://www.Kawasaki.com)
85 kx125 41034-1114
86 kdx200  41034-1146
87-88 kdx200 41034-1157

Partzilla.com
http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/kawasaki/KP-41034-1114.html (http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/kawasaki/KP-41034-1114.html)
This Kawasaki 41034-1114 DRUM-ASSY,RR BRAKE is used on these models and components: 1985 KX125-D1 KX125

http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Kawasaki/Motorcycle/1986/KDX200-C1+KDX200/REAR+HUB/parts.html (http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Kawasaki/Motorcycle/1986/KDX200-C1+KDX200/REAR+HUB/parts.html)
This Kawasaki 41034-1146 DRUM-ASSY,RR BRAKE is used on these models and components: 1986 KDX200-C1 KDX200 REAR HUB

http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/kawasaki/KP-41034-1157.html (http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/kawasaki/KP-41034-1157.html)
This Kawasaki 41034-1157 DRUM-ASSY,REAR BRAKE is used on these models and components:
1987 KDX200-C2 KDX200 REAR HUB
1988 KDX200-C3 KDX200 REAR HUB

So Kawasaki, Partzilla, and my physical measurements agree.
That being said, 86-88 kdx200 rear hubs have the same casting number embossed on them and the same physical measurements. Probably just a color change.
But, the 85 kx125 rear hub is different then the kdx200's .... but, I think there is a good chance that the 85 kx125 kx250 and kx500 may be the same.
Before you buy, simply ask the seller for measurements.

so there is a glitch in the Kawie fiche...even my local Kawies website still shows as everything has been overseen as the 41034-1157.
It does show the old part numbers that you have listed...but Rocky Mountain, Motosport, and my local Kawie dealer all show the 1157 replacing the other numbers.

thanks for taking the time to look that up!

thanx guys for helping me sort this out Im going to Phillip Island today to look at a few 80s kdx 200s the guys not sure what year they are maybe I will get lucky he want $40 per complete wheel :)
Title: Re: Rear brake screwed
Post by: bens87braap on September 02, 2014, 12:04:39 PM
looked at 3 kdx 200 wheels yesterday from the 80s but no bike so not sure what year.  Bad news is none of them fit they all seem to be narrower in the hub.

How do u think i would go repairing this drum with some metal mend.  The bike will never be raced its just a second bike and something for the wife to ride,  If I can get it smooth enough i would think it just might hold up to the task.  Any thoughts?

I was wondering if there's enough meat there to have it machined smooth, then press in a steel liner...might not be cost effective...you'd have to look into it.

nice spotting Dinky, doesnt show up on my search,  looks like the cam has made its way to the hub on that one too if u look at pic 3 it doesnt look as bad as mine but maybe it needs repair too  :|  I have also sent him a msg asking how much postage is to Australia might cost me 200 AUD for a wheel that will cost same to repair as what i have hhmmmmmm  see if he reply to sandblaster to make sure it fits

Jumpin in at half speed here. I screwed around with my 1980 CR 80 rear wheel for 2 weeks before I figured out it was actually a 77 Yamaha wheel and axle. Are you certain your wheel is original.

Post by: sandblaster on September 03, 2014, 04:35:14 PM
His measurements match what I have recorded for a 1985 kx125.
Since 85 was the only year drum brake with a 20mm axle I think he has the correct wheel.

yes thanx is it worth the 120 AUD  :|  landed at my door I will ask him some more questions about the drum as i can see small scratch mark same spot as mine.  If I dont have to repair then the price is ok.
