Title: Exhaust pipe springs
Post by: hughes on February 24, 2005, 01:30:00 PM
What are you guy's using for exhuast pipe springs :?: I have noticed that bob'scycle.com has diff. length springs. Can you get the springs to tight :?: I am using o.e.m springs and they fit just snug. The top two were real light tension so I move the clips that are on the pipe froward just alittle to add move spring tension.

Hughes,
Springs are really easy to shorten. I do this all the time. Simply cut off 1/4" or so with some side cutters. Then use the jaw of the side cutter to separate the last coil from the rest, bending it up a bit. Grab the last coil with some pliers and bend it upright. Voila, a new shorter spring. Hope this helps. Cam.

KXcam22,

Do you double up on springs two per. clip using 6 instead of three. Just as back up in case one springs breaks :?:

Could loose springs on the head of the pipe be the reason for smoke puffing out there?

Yes, You need to make sure you have a copper crush washer between the pipe and the cylinder. I use high temp rtv silcone on the o-rings. Tight springs are a must. You may be looseing some power.

Yup, bottom end will suffer if when you see that smoke puffing out.  the RTV will seal this spot well, and bring you some bottom end.

Hughes,
I use the standard 3 springs and some slightly oversize o-rings for a tight fit. Haven't had to use RTV yet but that may change as the bike/pipe wears. Cam.
