Title: Refinishing my swingarm...any special paint for aluminum?
Post by: dinkyguitar on May 22, 2014, 02:35:57 AM
Hi All,

Can I use the regular rustoleum primer & paint on aluminum?

I think bare aluminum would be cool but getting all those pits scratches off an 87 swing arm might be challenging....

I think that powder coating would be best... but regardless of what paint you use, surface prep is crucial.
But, before you do anything, get some Scotchbrite and wd-40 and try to clean it up a bit first.
I have made some horrible looking swing arms look great.
I start with green and then use blue to finish them out.

Thanks....

Power coating isn't in the budget so I'll have to stick with painting...

I just wanted to know if I need to use a special paint since it's aluminum.

The limited experience I have is a clean sand blasted surface is better then a dirty, greasy, or polished surface for the paint to stick.
I have had the best success with VHT engine paints.
