I recently purchased a 99 KX250 locally from a guy who had blown it up. Top end was trashed and cyl scored. I sent the cyl to US Chrome to be welded, plated, and finish honed. I threw a new Wiseco piston in the bike and it fired right up. I didn't touch the bottom end at all besides adding a tusk clutch and spring kit to it. Bike runs great but I swear it doesn't have a second gear. When I shift from 1st to second it feels exactly the same and it's driving me crazy. I can't tell if it's me or the bike. A buddy rode it an he said he thinks the two are just really close. Idk. Any input as to the culprit or am I missing something?

Wile,
The 99 KX250 was the first year of the new transmission with 1st & 2nd gears being very close in ratios, but there is a difference just not as much as most are familiar with.

my 2000 is the same way...very close ratio 1st thru 4th...I played with sprocket set-ups for a couple weeks before I finally found a happy medium at 12-47.
you'll get used to it after a little while.
