What's the difference between an 86' 500 and the newer bikes as far as the motor?Anyone?

Errrrrr, am not sure but as far as I know the 86 KX doesn't have a powervalve (KIPS system) and it uses a borable liner instead of the plated aluminium one that the newer ones have.
Not sure about the rest but you should be able to pick up some of it from looking at aftermarked catalogues and if the piston has the same part number it will be the same, check out crank bearings,conrods and so on.

I have too old -86 KX.
86 have KIPS only extra exhaust ports. Not in main exhaust port, like newer. I think that this is main difference. 86 have already electrofusion cylinder.

You have right there :wink: (THE expert of 1986 model (68rwhp) :twisted:
1986-88.One big "no move"main exhaustport with two big "moves"subexhaustport.
1989- One smaller "moves" main exhaustport with four smaller "moves" subexhaustport
Also another inlet style 1986-88 ,but same reedcage.
