Title: K5 motor in an ATV chassis
Post by: dirk_411 on May 02, 2014, 11:18:42 PM
Someday id like to put a K5 motor in a tecate 4 frame.  I wanted to pic your brain and see if anyone has any knowledge or experience putting a NON counter balanced engine in a quad frame?  I have seen multiple attempts over the years and very few have longevity on their side.  I have zero faith that any sort of "rubber" mount concept works.  Beyond that I am not sure why the majority of tecate 4/K5 conversions fail, it's always vibration issue's which lead to cracked frames.

I have seen a couple conversions work.

Not something I will be doing soon.   But,  im going to start the research.   I have the rolling tecate 4 chassis to do it and would prefer to use an 04 K5 motor.

Chime in and tell me what you know

Any suggestions or tips on how you mounted yours?

Yours was actually one of the ones I know of that works.

Does someone in your clan still have the white and pink tecate 4?

You might want to investigate crank balance factors..

A little of topic and also nothing I'm doing in the near future but I'm wanting a long travel front end. Look around every now and then but can't come up with much.

SB.  Is there any literature on the site to explain crank balance factors?

Since yours is a different chassis design it would be hard to get the balance factor you need unless someone else has done the homework.... So in the very least, get it balanced.

Id do a ton of research what balance factors quads are running

I read a document that Larry posted, found it in search function.  Very good literature,  by reading it I'm not to act like I completely get it.  But it did help me understand the basics.  This is the stuff my engine builder talks to me about every few years.  Ive never had a conversation about the Kx500 engine.  Ill keep reading to better understand.   This K5 tecate may be a couple years away.  I believe all the balancing is done by falicon

I think I just got lucky, and got a good crank I spent quiet a bit of time making sure it was true.  No fancy mounting its just solid mounted.  It does vibrate but is still very ride able It will wear me out a lot quicker than a 250 but that's just how 500s are.
Ya I saw your message the other day my daughter still has the pink and white T4 but has been talking about a color change if I ever get the time to re due it
