Title: Death Valley Ride
Post by: alward25 on April 10, 2014, 01:38:10 PM
So, for the end of April, some friends and I hope to soon be new friends are going to embark on a type of adventure I have yet to do.  A 10ish day adventure/dual sport/enduro/whatever we can get away with ride in the Death Valley area.  They have been doing it for the last 4 years and I will finally be able to join them this time around.  One thing that had been plaguing me is how to carry all my camping gear, food, parts, extra fuel, water and things of that nature.  I have seen little trailers that run you about $1000 and that was a little out of my range.  So, I decided to make one, cheap and beefy.  But, it had to be light enough not to be too bulky.  Moto-mule looked too light-duty for what I want, even though it is chromoly.  Trail-Tail looked a little too clunky for the price.  So, here are a few pics of what I have started and hope to be mostly done with tomorrow.  Using a parts I has laying around.

18" KLX 450 wheel assy
Used Bridgstone tire and 4 mill tube
kx 125 swingarm, shock, and linkage
and sadly, a 2000 kx250 frame I just powdercoated, but I have another one.

and link to the rest of the library I started.

Stay tuned, if you want

I would. I've seen the trail tail, this is a very cool idea.

What bike is it going to be attached to?

i would use the same rear wheel with same tyre, like in the attached bike, so you could change it in the case of air loss from the rear tube

For this ride only it will be behind a 2000 Yamaha wr 400, then the Kawasaki's.  18" wheel on both, new wheel bearings in the trailer wheel and i will be carring a tube but it has a 4mil thick tube in it now. Doing some more chopping and welding tonight, hope to have more pics later.

the 4mm tubes are very good, but nothing is undestroyable...   still excited to see your progress with it... 8-)

Almost done, just a couple of things to finish off.  Weighing in at 79 lbs with the 10 lb action packer.  My goal was to keep it under 80lbs, just by the skin of my teeth.  Now to see how much all my crap will weigh loaded with fuel and water and food and tools and alllllll my camping stuff.  Want to keep it under 200 lbs fully loaded.  Moto-Mule can only say it is lighter and that is it.  This is twice as heavy, but will tough out anything and it takes the same tube as my pull bike and common bearings.

Back to work!  I leave Saturday morning :-o
