Here are a couple of pics of the project. First is all the nice bits scattered around the bike.
Second is a shot from the back with a plate frame and personalized plate off of one of my crotch rockets from '92. Used it to mark and drill the holes in the fender. Can not see the mirrors but they are pretty much where I want them. The control switch cluster is on the left bar. (http://i62.tinypic.com/nmhq8o.jpg)
Going to leave the engine stock. It was running good at the end of last year so will probably leave it alone. MZB 100 watt lighting coil is already installed. Should be fun once I get it done. Will take pics and post as I move along. No, I will not be putting the personalized plate and heavy plate frame on this bike, though the plate name probably fits this one better!
-
is that a hand/home made pipe guard, or did you buy it?...I like it.
that thing's gonna look sweet when it's done.
-
I'll be watching with great interest 8-)
-
Me to
-
Ya! You guys are making bets on if I ever get it done! I have read and seen some builds on here that are WAY nicer then mine will ever be. Function over style is my motto. :-D
You have me convinced on the under plug temp gauge after reading around. Will probably put on both since the info of what temps 'should' be are so readably available on the site. Changing mix oil :-) so I will want to keep my eye on it.
-
Ya! You guys are making bets on if I ever get it done!
you'll get it done...even if you're in Pampers by that time :-P
-
Hey Foxx, missed your question. I think this older pic will explain what you are seeing. Spark arrestor. Not guard. And an ugly one at that! (http://i39.tinypic.com/2eov2xg.jpg)
-
ahhh, silly me...after 39 years of being involved with dirt bikes, and I still don't know the difference between a pipe guard and a spark arrestor :-P
so what I'm seeing here is not a guard of any kind? :?

Oh THAT! Was on the bike when I got it. There is a matching one over the rear brake master cylinder. Look home made to me, but someone here may know better. I will take a better pic if you want more detail but it looks like fairly thin 'stippled' aluminum formed to fit.
-
I will take a better pic if you want more detail but it looks like fairly thin 'stippled' aluminum formed to fit.
you don't have to take any other pics....I kinda figured it was a home made job, I haven't seen one like it before....
sorry for the sarcasm...feel free to return any crass gestures anytime :-D
-
No need to apologize for the sarcasm. When you are talking to someone that appears as dense as a board (me) it is to be expected. :-D I work daily with (I am one) many 'ground floor' workin' folk and the smart ass, rude, sarcastic entertaining conversations that go with it. Yesterdays included masterbation, tracking chips in flu shots :-P, street gangs, motorcycles, double d's, Union issues and management. I have so many tire tracks on my back they look like moguls. But do not despair,,, I will not disappoint...

Finally got around to trying the form with .93 ABS. Though the sheet was too small for the stretch I thought I would try it anyway. Oops. The good thing is it allowed me to see that it might have been a tiny bit too short but there was room to add a spacer to the bottom of it. (http://i61.tinypic.com/23h5es0.jpg)
So on to fiberglass. Taped the form and base with strapping tape, mixed a little black pigment with the resin, and 'glassed 'er up. Did it last night so have not been to the shop to check it yet. Yes, that is a signed Malcolm Smith poster. Had a fun few hours visiting with him a couple years ago. He is really as nice as he seems. Still rides!
-
Kinda looks like my work bench.. without the cool Malcolm Smith poster :-D
-
Box trimmed with battery in place.
Box in bike. As was said in the movie 'Babe'; "That'll do pig, that'll do..."
Interesting note; The piece of wood I used dried and warped after I cut it down. Makes the battery a tight fit. :x
-
Dam that's clean. I may have to copy that ideas for bat box
-
WOW!!!
Very nice work...
I'd buy that for a dollar :-D
-
Careful Blaster, you might get one in the mail. I still owe you for the 'gifts' you sent. :-D. Just to mention it, the ABS was .093. Surprised THAT was not corrected!
-
Yeah don't do that... I would have to go on a shopping spree to send your way :-D
-
What is this .93 abs and where can i buy some?
-
Got a couple things done. Roughed out front turn signal mounts. Need to round the corners and clean them up a bit but I think that is where they will be.
REALLY avoiding pulling the screws out of the brake rotor on the rear wheel. Hoped ProCycle would change it for me when I bought the new one. Hey! They had my hub!!! They probably looked at the heads of them and said "No Way!" and just sent the new screws with it. Really hosed up. Was a hub I bought off Ebay, so at least I did not chew them up. :-)
-
Heat will be your friend....
-
True that! Finally got back to rounding off the corners of the brackets and mounting them permanently. May do a bit more to them but they are good for now.
Took a couple hours off work to do a 48 mile each way run to buy a couple Baxley motorcycle stands for a great price. Now I have four! Might need one more... :-D
-
After getting the 'honey do' list done today I puttered around in the shop and finally decided to stop dicking around and work on getting the old rear rotor off, for better or worse. Did a lot of broken and stuck bolts over the years on old bikes and when I worked at the Electric Motor and Pump Shop. Pumps and electric motors on ocean going boats take a beating!
Dug the Oxy/Acet set out and was showing 15 lbs on the Acetylene bottle. Have not even used it for at least 10 years. Put my smallest tip on and started pulling bolts. There was a couple of hosed up ones but with the hammer driver and the heat five came out with only a little effort. The last one was really hosed up. After determining it was not coming out 'normally' I used my first line of pulling stuck allen head bolts.
I drove a Torx bit into it with my short hand sledge, put the heat to it and smacked it with the hammer driver. BOOM! Out it came! Not near the pain in the rear I thought it would be. Excellent!
-
Yep, I have removed a few thousand of them and you hit the nail on the head, without heat your beating a dead horse.
I use map gas and hit the bolt for about 30 seconds.
Usually that's enough to get them right out.
Oxy/Acet will do it MUCH faster :-)
Hammer driver? Mandatory...
-
Making some painfully slow progress along with all the other crap I have going on including making foam rocks for the pond filter cover. (http://i60.tinypic.com/2vtuq3c.jpg)
I did a search for info on the 320mm front brake rotor install to save some trouble but no joy. No instructions included with it other then basic 'make sure it fits without binding'.
Looks like the stock line routing is not going to work, the line brackets will have to go and I will have to pull the line up pins (at least one) out of the caliper to install into the new parts. Ah yes, the joys of modifying stuff! (http://i60.tinypic.com/30jto3t.jpg)
-
Hmmm..
Here's how I routed mine.
-
Looks like the line routing will work. The lower bracket is touching the rotor and that is where I stopped. Figured the whole thing might need to move. Not sure my EBC bracket looks like yours. I will look closer at it before mounting. The rotor bolts were incorrect that were sent with the kit so now I am wondering if something is amiss.
-
Yeah, I didn't think my EBC set up was gonna work at first either.
But, as you can see it will work with not much to spare.
-
While it looks like it will work it still does not look like yours. Would have messed with it but got two and a half hours of sleep and drove 450 miles to go Walleye fishing with my fishing fanatic brother in law. Had success!(http://i57.tinypic.com/2465fn5.jpg)
-
Won't be going hungry tonight
-
Limited. Couple nights! Cleaned my fish then went over and helped him clean his 28. Worked on the bike when I got home and finalized the wheel location, hose routing and such. Loctited the bolts and finished the front wheel. The plan to swap dirt tires is probably not going to happen unless I get another 320mm disc for the dirt wheel. My bracket IS different from yours! Pulled the top bolt and installed the hose bracket after this was taken. (http://i57.tinypic.com/5v5c7q.jpg) Sucked coming home from the dry east after fishing and into rain on the wet side. It is raining buckets right now.
-
Looks good.
I'll be switching my SM wheels out for a paddle and fat front knobbie for the end of this month.
Going to tear up my SM at Christmas valley.
-
Finally got the rear wheel on. Rock (foam) filter cover I have been working on is in the foreground. May have a bit more time to work on the bike now that it is mostly done. :-P
Bike is looking better! Walked by it and hooked my pant leg on the 'bendable' turn signal which broke off. Hmmm. Looks like I will be able to repair it though. The light pulled out of the rubber and looks like it was just glued in. :x (http://i60.tinypic.com/sc3n1x.jpg)
-
If you have never rode a K5SM your in for a treat
Looks good... I'd trim the front fender a bit though.... Going down the freeway a 70 or so the stock fender isn't real happy.
-
I have a fender off of a crotch rocket I have been playing with... 8-)
-
Bagged the crotch rocket fender and cut the original to the same length from the mount holes to the end as the rear part of the fender is. Made a template off of the end of the front part of the fender and used that to cut the end off so to give it the same profile as the original.
Also routed wires and drilled some holes to route them where I wanted them to go. Ended up cutting the 'custom' harness to make it fit better so will solder and shrink wrap the sections I will use back on. No pics this time.
First time I have actually attached the headlight unit where I want it to go. I think it will look good. Repaired the broken turn signal as well. Making progress!
-
Awesome. Moving right along. It's closer to running than mine
-
Got more wiring done today. Hooked up the battery and checked out the lights. Turn Signals, tail and brake lights all light up like they are supposed too. Tying and wrapping things up. Have to make some brackets for the flasher unit, and horn. Also need to install the pressure switches on the brake lines and run another wire for the front switch. Headlight and speedo will be last to install but I am still a ways away from that. Forgot that I had a 15 tooth front sprocket to put on until I found it in the bottom of the box of parts! Oops! Moving along!
-
Dang this wiring and street crap is taking forever!
Had a bunch of stuff going on plus cataract surgery on my left eye. Still moving along though. Here are a couple of views of where it is at. Side and front. Very close to getting it checked out for the plate. Got a weird thing going on though. The LED flasher does not seem to like the battery going below 12.9 volts or it will not operate. Even stuck a 2 amp charger on it then turned on lights to bring it below that and it would work intermittently. All soldered connections. Used the wiring that came with the unit. Seems to be heavy enough wiring. May try a jumper to put an extra battery wire to the switch to see if that works. Always something or nothing at all. :?
-
I hate wiring.
It was the hardest thing to do for me.
And it's still not right.
But it works good enough for now.
-
I don't mind it so much but as OCD as I am I get really frustrated when things do not work perfectly. Not sure why it is not working at this point other then the LED flasher unit is not working correctly.
Even though amps is what you need to make things work usually the volts will drop off with a load when pulling power and are easier to measure.
This is holding at 12.9 (from 13.25) with my lithium battery when things are turned on. Lights are all bright and do not dim, which would be another clue.
If I turn on the signals first and let them run for a few seconds they will stay on when I hit the lights but not the other way. Sounds like low power but a voltage check at the flasher unit shows 12.9 v also.
Probably will put a charge in the batt and try again. Irritating.

Installed 4 of these (ktm 530, 525, 300, and a KDX 220) complete harness nothing plugs into the wiring of the bike. and they make a kit that comes with a rechargeable battery that lasts tons of hours running the tail light signals and horn.. There every bit as good as the baja designs ones i've seen, LED tail light ect.
-
Not to mention the $500 lighting stator... :-o It will all be good.
-
(http://i59.tinypic.com/au8riu.jpg)
I never realized how "little" time that bike appears to have...I like it!
-
(http://i60.tinypic.com/rcopsp.jpg)
Well, I think it is done. Thought it was done this morning but while cleaning up saw a wire with a 'thing' on the end and realized I had not put the speedometer pickup on it. after making a bracket, running the wire and glueing in a magnet I 'think' it is done again. :-)
Will fire it off tomorrow. Checked for spark while the plug was out and it has spark. Kick stand 'may' be short enough but a strong breeze might blow it over. Have to park on a hill or put the stand in a depression for safety. Or just cut the thing down. :|
I will call the place about inspecting it for a plate today and see what they need.
Took long enough!
-
Looks awesome Brute!!...nice job!
When do we get to see a video of you doing a burnout into a wheelie down the street??!!
-
How about someone dressed in my stuff doing that? :-D Been so long since I got 'crazy' not sure I could handle it! My last off road crash was a bit of a 'wake up'. Reactions definitely ain't what they used to be.
That said I picked up a used set of full leathers on Saturday and had them at the leather repair shop for a new zipper an hour later. Am thinking I should do a track day with our little 250 track bike and, well, maybe the insane crazy SM KX5 as well. :-o
Got to drive it first though. :-D
-
eh...as long as you're having fun, that's all that matters...and I'm sure you will!
-
Looks great. I'm excited for the ride report
-
Good God A'mighty Batman! I have been riding a 250 Ninja (one of the most fun bikes we own) for the past week. Started the KX5 (second kick!) and rode it up and down the street a couple times. Holy crack pipe!!! :-o Forgot what real power feels like.
Seems to idle better now with the hot stator/ign and light flywheel then it did all stock with the heavy flywheel weight. Gave a little burble mid RPM like it was loading up so I goosed it a bit. What was it that 'Joe Guts' the motorcycle test rider said? "That'll blow the tar and nicotine out of your lungs!" I don't smoke so it will have to be premix smoke. :-D
Just talked to the inspection folks and here in Wa before taking it in for the plate check out. It HAS to show charging ability, so the total loss systems seem to be out. Glad I got the charging set up. It also has to have DOT brake lines. Not sure they are on the KX. Doubt it. I will check tomorrow.
-
Soooo, just got off of the phone with another inspection dealer and they say "No" as it is not that specific on their sheet. Will try and get it up there tomorrow. Cool!
-
Getting exciting.
Have yo done anything to the engine or is it completely stock?
-
All stock other than the squish. When I had the head off for the compression release mod it measured stock bore and still had a clean cylinder. Stock pipe. Have not pulled it all the way down to look for other mods.
I think this one is cleaner and stronger running than the last one I had. Not sure I will mod it when ever I pull it down other than a balance but time will tell.
-
Besides bolt on's (Pipe, jetting, squish with compression release, and reed) Crank Balance and cylinder clean up are my #1 and #2 recommended mods.
Made more difference HP wise then anything else I have done so far.
Gives the motor a different tone.
-
Different then 'FAST!'? :-D Could not sleep last night thinking about the 'What if's" on the inspection so bagged it today. Loaded and ready to go up in the morning though. 8-) 80 miles in rush hour traffic. Can't wait!
Found the DOT amber and red stickers at NAPA and re-verified no need for DOT brake lines, though I did find the DOT markings on my rear line. Not going to strip the front line cover to try and find it there.
Checked 'max' readings from the under spark plug head temp yesterday and it shows 189'. May rethink using the Trail Tech Vapor for temp. The numbers are tiny though there are the 'high' and 'danger' lights. Considering modifying a pipe for an EGT also. Would probably pick up another stock one and then do a swap after 'bunging' it. Mine has a dent in one of the curves and it is probably time to replace the exhaust seal anyway.
Have read mixed reviews on using my exhaust analyzer (FAST) for mixture so not sure if I want to sacrifice a wide band sensor to try it.
Not really interested in modifying the KX5 much performance wise. Fast enough (for now...) and runs good. My experience is any time you start modifying they get finicky and harder to tune. Used to enjoy the challenge but not so much anymore. Easy is good!
-
I get it....
I just can't seem to help myself
-
Soooo, just got off of the phone with another inspection dealer and they say "No" as it is not that specific on their sheet. Will try and get it up there tomorrow. Cool!
This was both the total loss and DOT lines. Could not find anything reading through the specs about the lines or charging. There are so few folks doing the inspections that you are at their mercy for what they want. Arguing will get you nowhere.
-
I get it....
I just can't seem to help myself
I used to modify EVERYTHING. Along with picking up every odd ball, one off vehicle I could find. Then I would get bored. Then I would sell. Trying to quit that. I had to slap myself last year when I bought my brand new 2012 VStrom 1000 and two months later, TWO MONTHS! I am thinking I should sell it and get something else. STOP THE MADNESS!!!!!!
Wife is pretty used to it now after 20+ years.
-
Got to the inspection place (Skagit Powersports) early and had three of the folks come over to look before they opened. One looked at the cylinder and said "i wanted to see if that was what I thought it was". All good. Have my paperwork. Let one of the racers ride it. Big grins. Trying to talk me into heading to Oregon Raceway in Sept. Fun stuff! 8-)
-
I was offered a free track day up at Portland.
I should have done it but I know in the back of my head how competitive I can be.
And I would think, "If he can brake that late and go into that corner that fast I should be able to also."
Next thing you know my bike would be cartwheeling down the outfield with or without me.
Still I have that nervous itch that I want to scratch
-
The story about the guy that let a friend ride a brand new bike and they wrecked it? Yea, that was me. Back in the '80's. Two weeks old. Guy said he would pay then said "No" when I pushed him.
It went down, righted itself without a rider, hit a large rock (boulder) and cartwheeled a fair distance. Not pretty but at least the guy and his daughter were not on it any more. Sucked.
-
Got my plate today! I am curious, idling with a pretty tall kickstand on flat concrete or asphalt, the bike just sits there. Makes me wonder if it has already been balanced. Or it just could just be one that came in good from the factory?
I remember seeing that Sandblaster's idled in circles before balancing.
-
Ran it up and down the local Highway for a bit this morning and did a plug color check. All good. Light/medium brown. Could be a little lighter, but not dark enough for 'lazy' me to want to change jets. :-) Had the stuff sitting on the bench to put the Oxy probe in the pipe but think I will bag that as the plug color is pretty close.
Took it on a 30 mile ride combined freeway and secondary roads. Interesting how much more noticeable the 'run on' is on the street! The power pops on a single 500 are fairly dramatic on deceleration. Would be an unwelcome surprise on a 'pushing the limits' corner.
I happened to be looking into my left hand mirror about the time it snapped off at the base and vacated the bike while on a freeway run. Little vibration on it at speed in certain RPM ranges.
Max temp (Lugging a bit on a long hill) was 210. Average was in the high 180's/low 190's. Speedo says the max speed reached was 93.8. Probably from rolling on the throttle at the freeway on ramp to merge. Builds speed quickly the higher the RPM gets. Lot's of grunt down low too!
Only killed it three times at lights. :-P There is a fine line between a smooth start and doing a wheelie as the power starts to climb pretty hard at about 3000-3500 RPM. Found short shifting made it much smoother.
All in all I am happy with the conversion. Got lots of looks and thumbs up. There are tunnels under SeaTac Airport and it sounded great going through there. 8-)
-
nice!...I'd love to hear a 500 on the pipe going through a tunnel!
-
To help smoothen out the hit I geared mine pretty high.
Requires a bit of clutch to take off in first but isn't to hard on things.
I still have not tapped mine out on top end but I suspect it should do about 100 or so as it does mid 80's in 4th gear..
I have a lot of guys giving me the thumbs up when they catch me at a stop light :-o
Better ride it all you can while the weather is cooperating :-D
-
15/43 on mine. Slip the clutch a bit with a gentle touch on the throttle. :-o Likes to accelerate! Does not care for steady cruise so much. DaaaaDaDaDaDaaaaDaDa :| 5th gear roll on is impressive once the revs start climbing. Went by 2 cops with just a glance. :-D
-
DaaaaDaDaDaDaaaaDaDa
Mine does the same thing while at steady cruise unless I'm going about 75+
Did you open up the size of your vent tube on your gas cap?
That helped mine a bit but didn't cure it.
Trying to get the MZB on this week to see if that will help.
-
Just let my friend 'the racer' ride the KX5. He owned and rode 2 strokes before. HUGE grin. Loved it. Was sad he did not have his leathers with him. I imagine all the cops in the area will be looking for it now... :-D I would like to see him wring it out on a track.
-
So to back up just a bit, was going to leave the bike home yesterday as the replacement mirror had not arrived yet. Got it an hour before work, stuck it on and did the 14 miles to work and back.
Just took it out to verify and correct the speedo to a GPS. About seven miles total ride. Was going to ride it to the Post Office. Pulled out of the driveway and, the left mirror broke off at the same place the other one did. About the same total miles on it too. Sharp corner they left at the base does not like KX5 vibration me thinks.
When I was driving it in to work yesterday I reached out and compared felt vibrations between left and right mirror stems. Left was noticeably higher. Presume it is because the master cylinder cancels out some on the right. Got to do something different. Thinking bar ends.
Fifth starts running out of steam at just over 90 (on a closed course, of course...) but I think if I geared it a bit more to keep it in the 'sweet' zone it would go faster, not that I need to.
Pushed it on a couple corners and it is stable and, well, pretty fun! Still do not like the 'run-on' but that is the nature of the beast.
Lugging it below the hit at about 4K makes it smoother on the corner and if I time it right it is hitting the power as I am coming out of the corner.
Man it plus hard when it clears it's throat and gets down to business!
-
Just found out one of our janitors was having a cigarette at one our buildings on a corner on the other side of the field. Appears my KX5 came around the corner flat track style and smoked the tire accelerating down the straight section of the road after the corner... No wonder "the racer" was grinning when he came back! All I had told him was "Don't get hurt".

Latest look with rubber mounted bar end mirrors. So far so good with the rubber inserted bar ends. Had to bore out the ends of the extra thick aluminum bar to make them work but if they do not leave or break off the bike I will be happy.
Got to say, this thing pulls so hard in 5th at 90+ mph I am surprised the speed record is only in the 125 range. There is much more to it I understand, wind, traction and such, but still, seems to have plenty of power up there. I am at 15/43 and would maybe go 39 if I end up taking it to the track.
-
Lookin good.
Someone needs to break the record...
There is all the knowledge and experience here to do it..
I've got a frame and a few other parts to donate to any serious attempt on this site...
-
I suppose the weight is one thing. When I was at ElMirage once I was surprised at a Chevelle that was over 7000 lbs. saw the bolted in lead blocks and asked. Salt or sand ain't asphalt!
-
I do a lot of reloading and can send some lead as well :-D
-
Anyone know what the speed record KX weighed?
-
carefull on the road above 70-80 i had a bad speed wobble on mine that almost had me off, this was with a really short moto front mud guard to, with original i can predict when its going to happen but it caught me out big time with short sm style on, bars banging against the stops with a proper tank slapper, in seriously considering a steering damper.
-

I've had mine at a tad over 100 mph with no wobbles.
Yes, it will steer fast but not twitchy.
That was before I put a steering stabilizer on.
I wonder if you might have something slightly out of wack?
What kind of tires are you running?
-
adjust your suspension, stiffer on your compression and rebound
-
tyres are off rims at mo as having talon hubs re annodised can't be 100% on make but think were pirreli, yes suspension could be to problem, my road legal 580sm has kx250f front forks and are clamped onto the k5 steel frame with a 125 upper yoke and lower not 100% sure, this mod was done before i got the bike, i be leave they are better forks according to the mag feature, it has heavy oil in forks, but as for setting them up I'm clueless. i reckon steering damper has got to be way forward, anyone know of a good one to fit on a 95 steel frame?
never have problems with wobble at low speed, or coming down from wheelies,???? so my guess is fork set up ok.???
-
I have no steering dampener but have felt no wobbles at all. Rock stable. 17" wheels with Conti SM tires. Just got a recall on my front one.
-
Went back and read some of these and realized I forgot to take it in to get the front tire swapped. Got to do that!
On the other side, I am infused with 'Bird Dog Cinnamon Whisky' and will throw out there that I will probably sell or trade my street legal 2000 SuMo KX500 for before this year is out. I do not find it that fun to ride any more, and have other dirt bikes that, while not as nasty as the KX500, will not laugh while they try and kill me as the KX500 did the last time in the dirt before the conversion. Really, I heard it laughing at me while I was laying on the rocks in pain!
All the dirt stuff will go with it but it is set up with 17's and plated in Washington. I,,, am getting older and the saying "Pain is my friend" does not have the same meaning that it used to have when I said it in 'jest' when I was younger... Just sayin'...
-
Really, I heard it laughing at me while I was laying on the rocks in pain!
 I'm sorry....but I had to chuckle when I read this part.
-
I'm sad you have to let yours go.
I wanted a big bore two stroke SM since the mid 70's so when I built mine it was a dream come true.
I hope I can ride mine till the bitter end
-
Yeah. This one is my third but is probably the nicest one I have had. Put it on the lift this morning so I can pull the front tire. Gave me a thrill just pulling off the cover and seeing it again. If we get some sun and nice days I will probably change my mind again...
Sick that I would probably trade it for a mega scooter! :-o

Got a call in to Passalt, uhhh, Passaunlt, uhhh, well, whatever they are called (am well into an American Stout 10 Barrel Brewing beer) about rebuilding my engine on the KX5. Getting lazy and would rather have someone that has done an engine rebuild on a KX5 (or anything) more recently than me do it! Asked about balancing too. Anyone know if they do it? Still not sure I need it but it can't hurt.
-
Yeah, Pinsonnault Racing did another for me a couple of months ago...
I sure like their balance work..
-
Ahhh! So they DON'T send it out! Cool. Curious how much it will add to the 'rebuild' amount. Hey! What are you doing up anyway?!?! I have an excuse as I only got off work a bit ago. 😄
-
Give Todd a PM.

If I remember right the last one he did for me was 240 with my own rod kit.
That was a complete rebuild using my Wossner rod kit, weld, balance, and true.
Ummmm sometimes you just can't sleep...
I made up for it this morning
-
Already had sent a PM and received a reply this morning. Next is yanking it out and sending it off.
-
New tire on. Had note to self about checking carb cable routing and hoses 'before running again' from work done months ago. Corrected same. Fired up beast. All works as it should. Excellent. Not time for a rebuild yet!
New rubber mounted rear view mirrors work good so far. Got a lot of looks as I was wearing my florescent orange coat while on a banging away bright green dirt bike! Got lots of 'nod's' and waves. :-D Fun stuff!
-
So I put this bike on Ebay last week and it closed Tuesday with a starting bid of $2500. No bids. Lots of 'views' and 'watchers' but not one bid. Zero. Nada. Geez, is it that ugly? :?
I figured it was a good time of the season to sell it. Hmmm. I certainly have more than that into it but that does not often translate over. Have to think about this some.
I bought two more motorcycles in the last three weeks so am getting a pretty full stable!
-
Yeah... sales are slow for us considering the time of the year and I'm not seeing the parking lots full at the riding parks..
Stinkin economy :x
-
I did have one very kind person :-P that said he would buy it for $1500. I have another project I am working on and may look to see if the wheels will work on it. Probably will leave it as is for now and just leave it comfortable and protected in the garage. When I look at the cover I imagine a swirling darkness under it waiting to be unleashed... :-D
-
1500? oh my, that was generous
-
So I finally got some mix made up, pulled the cover off it, and topped off the KX5 to ride to work. Granted it has been a while since I rode it... I fired it up and took a quick look at the lower right of the VaporTech gauge (1st clue) after it was running for a bit and it was pretty stable at 165. I did not have my glasses on (second clue) at the time.
Hit the freeway and noticed the 'temp' was climbing some but not to worried as it is 75 degrees out. Still climbing as I am running along steady at 65 which concerns me as it is over 200 now. :x The only time it has been that hot before is when I topped it out. Coming up on my exit and it is showing 240 :| but it is still running happy as a clam and no pinging or acting 'hot' (third clue) but now I am worried and having thoughts of an engine rebuild and disasters. Got to make work though so keep going.
The temp is still climbing but very slowly (fourth clue) which is odd as I am maneuvering through 'town' traffic. I am thinking "Maybe I should stop and let it cool off" but it is still running fine and there is no water coming from the overflow. I pull into work and it is showing 280. Holy crap! :-o I kill it, get off and feel the cylinder (I can touch it) and watch the overflow. Nothing (fifth clue).
I have some free time for the first half of shift so I am franticly searching KXRiders and other sites for the highest running temps people have seen. This is just not good! :?
On lunch I move the bike over where I can lean it over a bit to burp the head. The movement activates the VaporTech gauge. I put my glasses on to see and burp the head. It is just fluid, no air. I check the plug to make sure it is tight (for good measure) and pop the radiator cap. Full. I stand up full of concern and notice the VaporTech gauge is still reading 280, but there is a 'dot' after the "8". Then it dawns on me. I was watching the odometer! Good Grief. Then I remember the second push of the 'mode' button gets water (head) temp. I was pissed (at myself) and relieved at the same time. :-P
I am just glad I left my phone at home today or I would have been posting about the 'uber high' temperatures I was seeing. This is bad enough! While funny after, it was a rough four hours. Temp was fine and stable on the way home... :-D

Too funny   Senior moments can suck man

Well, I hope I don't get kicked off this site... I sold my KX5 SuMo Friday. It really was time for me to raise the white flag and admit at 61 with damage (6 weeks out of my 4th rotator cuff surgery) it is time to stick to the slower and more easy going style of dirt riding and motorcycles in general. Not more track days or racing either. Sold two of our Ninja's last week as well.
I sold the KX5 with the dirt stuff and other parts I had collected over the years. There may be a mention of it here at some point by the new owner.
I mentioned to my wife that I will have to turn in my 'man card' after the sale and she, in her most sympathetic voice, asked me if that meant we were in a 'same sex' marriage now. Nice.
I will keep my little KE100 and may look for a smaller KX but time will tell.
KX'less in Seattle! :-D

that sucks...that was a clean bike you had!....it'll be interesting if that "ole itch" comes back to haunt ya, if a smokin' deal on another 500 crosses your path.
-
That was what happened on this one! I had three different KX500's over 30 years plus a 'parts' one I was going to fix up but sold it with #1. I had an 'almost' wipe out on #2 when I was 50 and decided to get rid of it before something happened. Ten years later I ran across #3 and decided at 60 I should buy another one... Not the best idea. If I run across another that seems like a good deal I will put it on here and walk away! :-D
-
No worries Brute.
If you get the itch again you are welcome to make the trip down south and take your old ride for a ride :-D

I'm really looking forward to running them side by side, The new one has a modded head and MZB ignition but is otherwise stock. Mine has stock port timing but everything else has been dittled with to some extent. It should be interesting 8-)
-
I will be looking forward to hearing how the two compare. Stock pretty much everything including pipe on my old bike/your new one. :-) Both with MZB. Interesting your observations on the MZB. Don't remember reading anything about that on this site?

Yeah, we are working on it and wanted a clear answer before we posted... :-o

So I just read this whole thread to see you sold your KX5SM and you lived in Washington State. I just bought a 99 KX500 last year rode it once before doing the Desert 100 last year where I crashed 2 times pretty good because I couldn't feel my fingers after 30 miles. After breaking my leg and pushing the bike 1.5 miles remaining in the race I have finally got the itch to ride some more or maybe convert to a SM. What do you think the total price is to convert? I wish I would have seen yours for sale.
-
No ad. Made him an offer he couldn't refuse... :-)
The wheels and tires brake pieces were around $1200, Lighting kit was around $350 maybe? Lighting stator was $500 or so. There were other pieces but that is the major stuff. The biggest thing is the time spent routing wires and putting all the pieces on. Best of luck!
