Hi guys picked up a sweet 1987 kx 250 im in Australia. One fork is bent and will not retract looking for replacment but im thinking that maybe the forks are not from a 87 as i have twin piston caliper. Can someone please confirm with me that the forks im after are actually 89 model as thats the only model made with twin piston caliper before the upside down forks in 90?? I could be wrong new to this group. Oh how do i add a pic of my bike? not the best on the PC thanx guys

you're welcome....yes the dual piston caliper was introduced in 89.
good looking 87 by the way!!
-
the bike was sitting in peices for the pic got it all going very fast bike but after 3 weeks bent fork trying to keep the front down lol maybe a little aggresive on the rear brake after the front was in what seemed like the point of not return. Im sure thats not what bent the fork but it slammed down hard and didnt retract i will now try find 89 forks parts are hard to come by lucky i have 2 sets of plastics originals and UFO brand new items too great site u will see me floating around asking for advise on my newest beast :-)

no 89 forks but he has the original 87 head stem triple clamps thanx could be another option problem is i pay more for postage to Australia then for the item lol its been like that for the whole build which i might add has taking 8 years to get 3 week ends ridding haha thats dirtbikes
-
just keep checking e-bay as I'm sure you do already....who knows, someone on here might have what you need too...or you could always upgrade to a newer set of upside downers 8-)
-

COUNT FROM LEFT TO RIGHT 10 CHARACTERS. Compare the 10th character of your VIN with the chart below.
If your 10th digit is a "V", look at the chart and find "V".
Your bike is a 1997.
If your10th digit is a "3", look at the chart and find "3".
Your bike is a 2003.
1980 = A 1981 = B 1982 = C 1983 = D 1984 = E 1985 = F
1986 = G 1987 = H 1988 = J 1989 = K 1990 = L 1991 = M
1992 = N 1993 = P 1994 = R 1995 = S 1996 = T 1997 = V
1998 = W 1999 = X 2000 = Y 2001 = 1 2002 = 2 2003 = 3
2004 = 4 2005 = 5 2006 = 6 2007 = 7 2008 = 8 2009 = 9
2010 = A 2011 = B 2012 = C 2013 = D 2014 = E 2015 = F
2016 = G 2017 = H 2018 = J 2019 = K 2020 = L 2021 = M
makes no sense to my numbers???

here check out this...
http://www.oem-cycle.com/Find_Out_Year_of_bike.shtml
there's some VIN threads if you go to the home page of this site, and scroll down to the "Maintenance & Technical" headline...at the bottom of that section you'll see "What year?VIN.#"
-
yes but it tells me to count the tenth digit left to right its a 8 im pretty sure its not a 2008 like the chart shows me
-
yeah it sounds like you've got a non U.S. bike there...maybe someone else can assist you with that, as I'm unfamiliar with the international stuff...a phone call to your Kawie dealer might be of some help too.

i feeled so free to post your pics to show here right... to clear, which fork and brake caliper you have there, do i need a pic from the right side and which diameter are the fork legs??
here is my 87 with a 1989 41mm usd-fork (european and australia only in 89, us-models had a 46mm conventional fork this year)
(http://img.webme.com/pic/d/der-motopunk/foto0554.jpg)
-
im finding that the forks are 43mm at the clamp heres a pic (http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/b501/ben_brown5/2014-03-16105332_zpsa9680a36.jpg)

Australia Kawie dealer cant help me they are hopeless thats why i joined this site trying to get answers
-
OK correct me please if im wrong but now im even more confused. USD forks are the upsidedown forks right? all the 1989 forks i find are non USD they are convensional telescopic forks I thought they didnt go USD until 1990 ??
-
the Euro bikes had USD from the factory in 89...maybe others, but not the U.S.
-
So do u have any Canadian Members that might help lol Will the USD head stem fit my bike? i would love to go USD but dont want to buy the wrong parts as everything i buy is imported from the states to Australia cost me heaps in postage :(
-
There are a lot of members on here that have done front end upgrades/swaps....maybe someone will chime in....there's always the "search" option too at the upper left corner....you can find a lot of good info going back several years.
-
also u may notice in the pics that i have a bolt with thread on it that goes through the wheel their is only the small 4 bolt clamp on one side fork not on both i cant even find kx near my year that looks like that thinking more and more that its not an original kawie part (http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/b501/ben_brown5/2014-03-16142737_zps19e1f33b.jpg)
-
The one on the left looks similar to a 87.
The one on the right isn't correct for sure.
On the right fork tube as shown in the pic, is there mount for the brake caliper?
If so, what is the center to center measurement of the caliper mounting holes??
-
the more you explain things, and the more pics you post...it's lookin like it's been played with already...any chance you can find out from the previous owner?
-

Don't get that red stuff on the green stuff...
Mixing them together makes a greyish brown color...
Who wants that :?

-
HAHAHA dont mix with red hehe if i new what head stem i had i would love to use Kawie shocks but also want to keep the twin piston caliper that is great. U guys rock
-
That triple is a 87 kx250 or very close to that year.
The Honda's were more rounded and the top clamp was black.
-
thanx I just spoke to the previous owner he says he never changed anything on the bike not sure were the bike was b4 that thanx just trying to work out which way to go the easy way is to just buy the 43 mm cr shocks and slide em in and be done with it dont tell anyone OK 8-)
-
ok so will the cr 250 shocks be stronger did mine bend because they were intended for the 125 i cant see the 250 being that much heavier. The 250 items look the same.
-
well ill be buggered lets see if i can find some of them does that mean my head stem is cr too??
after the pics agreed with sandblaster... :wink:
this are very good forks, but i think the 125-springrates are much to soft for your 250..also the double piston nissin-brake caliper is way better than the oem-one piston tokico that was used from 82-88 ..thats the reason why i fitted one to my 83 kx250 that also use 88-forks :-)
your headstem is definetely kx125-500 85-88 . i have a complete 87-fork in my spares.
conventional kx -forks from 83- 88 use the 43mm fork legs (same diameter as yours) so is for same diameter forks of other makes no diferent triple tree steering stem needed.
and after i showed my bike with the 89- usd-forks , you still ask of the fitment of the later usd-forks? :-D
the stem-bearings kx125 /250 /500 are same size from 1980- 1991 (except: kx500 never changed untill the last year 2004)
kx125/250 became a new stearingstem with bigger bearings in 92. now you have a big range of years and forks, where you can choose from. :wink:
little kx-fork history
89/90 41mm usd fork (except us-models with conventional kayaba 46mm in 89)
91-95 43mm fork (kx500 91-96)
96-2001 46mm fork and also change to the newer nissin brake caliper (kx500 46mm fork 97-2004)
2002-2008 48mm forks in kx 125/250, kxf 250/450
and at least: here is what i realize at the moment a conventinal wp extreme 50mm fork (from a 99 husaberg fe501) to my 87 . in the next days i have to figure out, how to fit the brake. i think it ends up with making another handmade adapter like on my 83 kx250..

yes that helps heaps The reason i asked about the fitment is U say ur using 89 USD forks that are 41mm. How will i fit them if i pulled out 43 mm shocks. i have a set of 41mm shocks here from another bike that will not fit. So to keep Kawasaki i need to go 91 to 95 shocks if i want to keep my head stem. Sorry i prolly wasnt clear with all my frustration :-P So u used the 89 head stem on ur bike then? maybe I should read it all again got notes written down everywhere im confusing myself lol

i have a simple answer to your last question... how will you fit any UpSideDown fork in smaller diametered conventional clamps??
that could never work. the 41mm usd-fork for example is 50 and 55,5 mm in the clamp areas...
upside down means that the tubes have changed positions... :wink:
you need the right triple trees to the usd-forklegs that you want to use . thats the reason, why i also adviced in my former post the fitment of the stem-bearings in the several kx- models over the years...
thats the very important fact to know for the fork-swap ...

keep the pics coming and feel free to ask whatever info you need... :-D

OK so now im stuck in a hole again I think i need a complete new carby. The low jet will not come out have tried everything is their another carbie that will fit the 87 kx 250 or do i have to run that exact carb?? MIKUNI? is the one i have on bike but so many other things are different could also be wrong one.
-
I have a Keihin PWM on my 87 and it works quite well. I was told it was from a late 90's Suzuki but I don't know that for sure.
Motopunk will have the information you need.
-
Another thing, If my motor was rebuilt 10 years ago then stored in the shed will the crank seals be perished? iv done maybe 25 hours on her and still fouling plugs every so often. It just doesnt seem to be running at 100 %
Hiawatha ride we put 14 hours on my mates bike so i must have done same and i went through 3 plugs..
Plug comes out oily and black sort of wet..
Since that long ride bike has not been happy, Tonight i read lots from here and something I read got me thinking, I pull off my "stator" cover the plastic one on left side, out comes the water :( im assuming the pressure cleaner got a bit close or the water spray from the back of my car may had something to do with it.
I pulled off "flywheel" not sure if im talking right as i said previously i can work on cars but doing 2 stroke bike for first time lol.. Now im sure those magnets on the inside shouldnt have rust on them?? what should i do im lost without the smell of 2 stroke it really hurts :(
i could get spark but im sure it used to be more spark and easy to start but not so easy any more ......
-
I will post pics of the magnets if that helps but its dark now down under and the lights are blown in the shed so have to wait till tomoz
looks alot older and rusty then the ones i see on you tube
-
Finally done, well as much done as it needs to be for me, Final touches are done and have a complete set of plastics now with OEM stickers, The bike is ridden almost daily so i not putting them on stickers are in pack i will keep them incase i sell the bike, New pegs landed, Showa forks from a Red bike, New brakes, tires, chain, sprockets, jets, the list goes on but finally DONE to my liking

to the carb..
i run at the moment the 39mm keihin pwk carb from a 1990 kx250. pilotjet 48, mainjet 175, needle n85c (stock in 88-91 kx250 ) airscrew 1,75 turns out... runs great ...
next upgrade for my bike is this one:
(http://img.webme.com/pic/d/der-motopunk/foto0472a.jpg) (http://img.webme.com/pic/d/der-motopunk/foto0474a.jpg)
caught this fresh rebuild 88 kx500 motor for a real good price... :evil:
-
Carb fixed I used Spiral Flute Screw Extractors to remove pilot jet then bought all stock jets and started tuning from their Main Jet 320
Pilot Jet 35
2 turns out air screw
2nd top clip on stock needle
Bike is running awesome with no power valves the only issue i can see is the snap from nothing into band now is so more aggressive those power valves really did smooth out the band, u notice it heaps after removing them lol
-
the feeling without powervalves is similar to the older kx250 from 84 and older... little bit like modern 125.. first decent power and with the right rpm: woohoo ... 8-) ...
you should try to find good used powervalves maybe 85 to 87 could be very similar ...
-
87 is a one off year for power valves i have been looking as i only need one side. I even bought some tecate 87 ones but they are bigger and i dont want to machine the cylinder to make it fit. Bike does everything i want it too, I dont race it just mainly take it camping and ride on my farm
-
the 88-92 power valves are also discontinued ... :-)
you could only try to find good used ones or a complete 87 cylinder or engine... at the moment i am thinking of reproduce them , but thats not so easy as it looks...
-
Iv Done it finally a brown plug not a dripping black plug the Bike is lifting in top gear, and I was just getting used to it now its a different bike so much more power went down to a 310 main on 2nd from top clip. 2 turns out on air screw check this out

Looks and sounds great!

I changed jetting while the bike was warm and everything was fine.
Today I started the bike (Usually first second kick) 5 kicks to fire (I never used the choke it always starts without it?).
It was revving really high so i pulled the choke on and it killed the revs.
I now need to warm the bike up with the choke on for about a min or it revs high when i turn the choke off.
any idea why the changes i made it jetting and air mix screw has done this?
thanx for any help. Ben
-
got it sussed i just start the bike from cold with no throttle and choke on and it fires straight away. The idle is still a little erratic sometimes it climbs a bit higher for 2 secs or so? hopefully im not hurting anything i did a plug test in forth at full revs and the plug is dark brown now not black
