Title: New 5th wheel hauler
Post by: Foxx4Beaver on February 01, 2014, 07:36:42 AM
Well I won a newer truck for towing my 5th wheel today at a fairly local auction thanks to my dad and his best friend since high school. When they retired from their jobs, the two of them started to transport cars and trucks all over New England for private dealers, dealerships, banks...etc, and my dads friend has an auctioneers license. I told him last summer to keep his eyes open for a newer Chevy/GMC Duramax because my old one(a 2001 Chevy Duramax) was getting old at 310K, and was starting to get a little rusty.
Well he called me Thursday night and said they found an 07 GMC Sierra SLE Duramax/Allison 2WD with 79K, 2 owner, that was in exceptional condition, and was a bank default that was going to auction. Fortunately, there isn't a big demand for 2WD trucks around here at all, thanks to our snowy winters, so it was only us and one other guy bidding on it. We were sure we were gonna be battling it out to the point we couldn't afford it....but, the other guy quit at $9600...our last shout was $9900....SOLD!!!!. I did have to borrow a couple K from the old man, but he was happy to help.
It's not perfect...it needs a few things, full brakes, tune-up, power steering hose leaking, tailgate mechanism has issues, hood has a couple small chips in the paint...mostly minor stuff. Just drove it home and it rides like it's on air, just as smooth as can be, and all kinds of power!. I decided I'm gonna give my 01 to my dad for hookin me up with the small loan and finding this one.
Here she is...

haha...yeah I'm psyched, never expected to get it for under $10K!...we figured it would go as high as $14K-$15K.
it took 8 months for something like this to come around, and I was starting give up.
2WD are very hard to come by around here...dealerships don't carry em...you have to special order a 3/4 ton PU in 2WD.
this one's originally from Maryland.
I can't wait to see how it does towing my trailer once I get the brakes done.

yes it is the LBZ....if I remember right they were only in the 06 and 07...then sometime in 07 through 2010 they had the LMM....10-11 was LGH...then the LML.
my 01 had the LB7...great motor, but they had some issues.

glad to hear you say that, because that's what I've been hearing for quite some time....it'll be a couple months before the weather is really good enough to de-winterize the 5th wheel to take it for a haul down the highway.

anyone have any experience with performance chips/programmers?....I have the Superchips 2840 from my 01 that made huge improvements, and it'll will work just fine on this one, just looking to see if anyone has any input on the Banks or the Diablo programmers...or any others that work good.

I could write a book on addictions...
when I was a kid I thought there was nothin better then orange slices and red liquorice.
then I diskoverd pixie dust in straws.
I couldn't get enough of that stuff.
then pop rocks came out and I thought I was in heven.
but my biggest addiction was taken that first bite of sour patch gummy bears.
I just can't seem to break the habit.

my buddy just sent me a pic of my new 5" exhaust mocked up...the old one's on the right, 4" aluminum coated steel...he said the new set-up will tuck up much nicer/tighter, as you can see the different bends, and lack of massive muffler syndrome...

haha...I believe you did discover some kind of "dust", and that a "straw" was used in some way....but I remain skeptical that there was any "Pixie" involved

well, now that I'm feeling a little better, and got my sick/vacation time sorted out, I figured I'd get back to upgrading the GMC.....soooo, I just got off the phone with Air-Lift and ordered rear air bag suspension for the long rides with the 5th wheel.

I ended up with the Air-Lift Wireless Air-Remote Air Compressor 72000...
it automatically maintains set pressures,
controls two springs independently,
two-way communication allows advanced diagnostics for safety and peace of mind,
no lines or wires to the cab,
wireless handheld unit that can be used in or outside the truck

and the Air Lifter Ultimate 88275 Air Bag Kit.....all for just over $800

I have a lot of friends that run air-bag suspension, and love it...so hopefully I'll be as happy as they are.

the little time that I've had to drive it, I absolutely love it, way more power than my 01 LB7, and much better ride in general....but I'm sure the more time I get behind the wheel, I'll start finding things that I don't like and irritate me.
It's been at my buddies garage for nearly a month...since I knew I was going in for surgery and was gonna be out of commission for a few weeks, I told him to just hold on to it and take his time with it. He actually just bought a new leftover 2013 2500HD with the LML, that I can't wait to take for a ride.

I hear ya...$30K is ridiculous, but it is worth every penny, and providing they're well taken care of...they hold their value pretty good. Honestly, I'm really surprised out of all people, you don't know anyone that has access into local auctions, or at least you haven't mentioned it.A lot of times they're bank defaults, and all they want is what was/is owed on the defaulted loan...sometimes it's low, sometimes it's high.

I'm assuming you're referring to the new emissions system crap?, I don't know very much about it, but from what I've heard, it sounds like a huge kick in the nuts...having to refill a 5gal DEF urea based fluid injector tank every 5K miles isn't very appealing....and on top of that, if you fail to refill it, the engine goes into "limp" mode.

My 04 f-150 is gonna need a new throttle body soon, as it's gone into "limp" mode a few times over the past few years...luckily, just shutting it off and restarting it resets the system and it goes back to normal, but it will eventually fail completely.

Well I've been putting a lot of thought into it since I got it...but I think a leveling kit is next. The only thing that's kept me from doing it is...it's only a 2 wheel drive...but I know it'll look better level.
I've got a 2 1/4" difference front and back...so the 2 1/2" kit it is.
(http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac152/foxx4afoxx2/truck_zps74141a11.jpg) (http://s895.photobucket.com/user/foxx4afoxx2/media/truck_zps74141a11.jpg.html)

When I got my F-150, it was the same way but worse...for some reason Ford had some of it's 4x4s roll off the line with -3" on the front ends, and some that sit perfectly level.
After I leveled it, I felt like I was driving a d**n monster truck.
