Title: Shop Mess
Post by: Brute on October 27, 2013, 07:12:47 PM
The shop is such a mess I grind to a standstill every time I look at trying to straighten it up. Parts are everywhere, crap is piled in ‘sort of’ related clumps. Shelves are packed with everything from RC gear to archery to pipe tools, garden and yard stuff, paint, boxes of mixed fasteners waiting to be sorted, pond paraphernalia, fiberglass stuff, assorted nails, lubes, oils, lathe attachments, metal pieces for building, and vacuum equipment. It seems like every thing has to move at the same time to be able to organize anything.
The twelve foot bench I have has about two feet of useful clear space on it. I have lots of stuff to sell off from long gone projects that would make a dent which would probably be a good place to start. The wife getting into riding and track days added three more motorcycles and a crap load of parts for the track bike.
Anyone else have a shop full of, well, stuff like that? Whenever I see pictures of peoples garages they always look pretty empty and organized. If you had a mess and organized it, did you just dump stuff or give it away to clear it out?

Selling any of your archery equipment?  I'm looking for a new compound bow and would be happy to help uncluttered your garage.

Well, shoot! I don't feel quite so bad now! I am on par with the rest of you! Only have three bows right now so can not in good conscience let go of any. : ) One is just a 25 lb I used to exercise after my last two shoulder surgeries.
I try and avoid taking pic’s in the shop (24’ X 36’) except a specific area so as not reveal it's true mess. I have three motorcycles in it now and could not get a third in without moving stuff around. It is really a shop/storage unit so everything is down there. I have to move five larger items just to get to the lathe as stuff is packed right up against it. When we built the shop the wife scoffed at the attic access I put in because we “Will not use it”. Ha! Packed up there too! Mostly her stuff!
Got to clear out some space so I can get three more motorcycles in before winter really hits. Wanting to buy a new one as the last years bikes are dropping in price. That would make four! Not sure I could do that.
Thanks for the pic’s guys! Misery loves company! I will get a couple shots of my mess soon.

I remember seeing some pics in your garage when it was 'spotless'. Motopunk looks like he needs more stuff in his! If you can walk easily around or more then five feet in one direction it is not cluttered enough.

4 Dirt bikes, 1 quad, a trailer (landlord won't let me keep it outside), tools, mountain bikes and spare parts everywhere in a tiny duplex garage.  It's a nightmare to get any work done.

Edit: Also the only one that is currently rideable is the CRF450R. :(

Was going to take a pic today as I was changing oil and filters getting bikes ready for winter rest. Wife came down and made suggestions/helped clean up the shop! Made room and got two more bikes inside and covered up. That is five inside now counting the one on the lift. Excellent! She had some other suggestions to get more room in the future also.

Finally got around to snapping a pic. This is about half the shop through the open overhead door. All the woodworking stuff is packed together on the right in front of the lathe, welding equipment, air dryer and small compressor. Three bikes, K5, Wifes street Ninja 250 and Track Ninja 250, are covered on the inside left. TW200 straight on and my brand new 2012 V-Strom 1000 is on the lift waiting to receive some farkels.
Got a good idea how to move things around to make more room while looking at things today. Have not touched the K5 since I got the basc lighting parts on. Have not even started it! Too many projects. Wife getting into riding took priority over everything! Pretty fun!

I think we need to separate the shop messes from the garage messes.  I can't compete with the above.

Is that your business?!?! Client stuff or a mix? Mixing station and all! You are correct though, either way, that wins in my book.

Hahaha yeah mostly my stuff and clients bikes ....I've got over 40 bikes/three wheelers and tons of NOS stuff for them and finding room is a big issue  :-D the floors not usually that full of crap...it's due for a clean up ...funny thing is...I still know where everything is!!!Another amazing thing is people often mention "geeze I love coming here it's like a step back in time...you don't see places like this anymore,I can relate to this place coz it looks like my garage at home"  :-D ...I have a huge amount of customers that keep coming back because there's no "excuse me don't go past that line there" or bloke around the back working on there things without them seeing what's going on....to be honest i don't want to deal with the people that expect to see a spotless and surgical gloves being worn whilst doing a job for them...I find people are happy to watch how things get done and learn something at the same time...I've had many a compliment by clients by them watching me doing something...and it's far easier to get them to pay after they have witnessed what it takes to the job.I have the only place that has an NC machine, paint booth/tinting system, global jig moto jig chassis alignment bench, scheibner digital chassis measuring system, bending equipment, graphic printing machine, wheel rolling equipment, chassis building, carbon fibre autoclave and TIG welding TI,MAG,SS and AL all under the one roof so there lots of interesting things to see/learn

That's how my uncle's old shop for cars was.  I miss that sort of environment.  I think that modern shops don't allow people to roam now days (in the states) because of insurance purposes or the possibility of theft.
